Matt Moore Outshines Chad Henne in Miami's Pre Season Primer

Hello Dol-Fans!

Miami’s Pre Season debut was a football horror show the first half, but fortunately the Defense (and Matt Moore) rallied in the second to salvage the game.

Matt Moore “looked the part” over Chad Henne last Friday, which will do absolutely nothing to bolster the teams (nor fans) confidence in him, or his ability to lead the Offense this season. He appeared off balance and awkward at times, showed moderately poor progression with his reads, and struggled again controlling the velocity on his short to intermediate throws, consequently resulting in his first pick. He did surprisingly make a positive play with on a seven yard scamper for a first down; that’s refreshing! It’s crystal clear that dusk is rapidly approaching on Henne’s time as the starting QB, unless he miraculously improves in the next two weeks. I fully expect HC Tony Sparano and OC Brian Daboll to give him at least two more Pre Season games, to “show his stuff” before they’ll be forced to make “the call.”

On a more positive note, I was very encouraged with Matt Moore’s performance and command of the Offense. He was able to connect on some downfield passes, stood tall in the pocket and delivered accurate passes with defenders in his face, and energized me as a fan. Though he wasn’t razor sharp, I hope to see more of him running with the first stringer’s in the remaining Pre Season games.

Whom do you prefer leading our Offense in 2011, Chad Henne or Matt Moore?

After one meaningless preseason game we're ready to make that call? I don't think so!

Henne is going to be a continued work in progress and much better than last year.. I also saw Bob Griese say that Henne will be just fine and that most great QB's didn't really break out until their 4th year, he mentioned asking Elway, Montana, Young and all saying about 4th year. If Greise says it I believe it. With some intelligent play calling and blocking from the front line. Henne will be better. And to those who think Tebow would be better, I remember Chad Henne waxing the Tebow led Gators in the bowl game here in Orlando. Henne taught them a lesson and spanked the Gators. Ask a Canes fan and he wil tell you about it. We hate the Gators and know when they get creamed. Henne has got some targets and Bush to keep the Defense back peddling. Consider the team thats now on the field vs last year and you should get very optomistic so quite hating and realize its a new season and its our time! I'll bet my Culpepepper game day jersey on it!!!!!!........puyt down the coke! er...drink pepsi.
Well I wont argue I was happy with how Moore looked. I will say it reminds me a ton of thigpen actually. He took deep shots more than he checked down. Thigpen ended up tossing a lot of deep ball picks as a result. Im not sure if he did that in carolina much or if the phins noticed the the 3rd string corners were biting on comebacks. im not sure why that was. I'll continue to watch him play to see if I can figure it out.

We all know Moore was playing at a different competition level so i wont rehash that. He did some good things. I think at this point you still need to see if henne can make that next step. They didnt draft mallet, they didnt sign orton to a big deal. I think that says they have decided to go all in on Henne. I wish they had done this last year. If they had done this last year rather than kill his confidence mid season I think the season would have ended very different.

Also the word out of the phins camp is that Moore hasnt practiced as well as Henne. So what we fans see in 1 game might be a unique performance compared to what has been going on in camp for a week plus.
Henne has some things Moore does not have. He has a big arm, and we fans know that arm can be very dangerous with the right player. He also was the pick of this staff to turn things around. We continue to hope that Henne figures out when and how to use those passing skills. For some fans it's hard for them to let go of a guy like Henne.

After years of average and some times below average results and high hopes along with seeing our players going to another team and succeeding. We tend to support a player like Henne because we want him to succeed. Guys like him get a much longer look at what they can do. Besides he may go to another team and be a star, or at least that is the thinking of we fans.

Matt Moore will never get that chance that Henne has and will. When Matt steps on the field he has to succeed on every single throw. Henne does not need to do that. At this time who starts for the Dolphins isn't a matter is who is better on the field. It's no more than the perception that Henne can be that Franchise QB and Matt Moore will never be that.
IMHO Moore will only get a start if during the regular season Henne either stinks the place up real bad or gets injured

I'm with you UK, Moore isn't going to get a start on merit in the preseason. Like Adam said, we don't see these guys in practice, and even if we did all of us would have a different view of what we saw.

13kv and I were talking about that earlier today. I mentioned a pass play that Henne had in the game last week. I saw it one way and he had a different view of the same play. Of course I KNOW that I was correct. :)) I think...
LOL, TOOO FUNNNY !!! :)
the problem here is the simple fact Moore did not do much like everybody is claiming. I watched this game 3 times now and I have to say Moore looks like Jim Everett from the Rams. Moore had happy feet and looked confused.

Henne had a pick that I do not care how hard a Qb throws the ball if the football hits you square in the numbers or hits your hands you are paid to catch the ball not deflect the ball for a pick. I think people just want this team to change and be like the Raiders never happy and never solid.

It takes time folks for a TEAM TO GEL. For the people who do not get that here is the lame mans terms, You can not build a team around guys who were great from another team and expect them to win the super bowl the first season they play together, this is the NFL not Madden. I can not believe this crap that I am reading, even if we drafted a good rookie he would not even start right away, look at Brady Quinn. Think people think, this is a business and simply entertainment.

I will stand firm with Henne. I think he gives this team the best shot to win. After that impressive dismal running attack this team put out during the preseason, that has more reason to be worried. That was scary and DID NOT HELP THE QBS WHICH IS WHY HENNE STRUGGLED AND SO DID MOORE.

Special teams made a huge impact and was the real reason the dolphins won the first preseason game, not because of Moore. Look at this way if Special teams did not score a touchdown Miami would have lost the game.

This team needs to get a high caliber rookie QB and properly groom him. They also need Webb and Simms to coach the line because wow the line sucked from what I saw. Maybe I am blind but wow.
Also, Riverdog, even the media don't see all the practices. And even if they did, they don't see things coaches see. I'm going to leave the personnel decisions to NFL coaches. Call me an old tradionalist if you like!
Nice post Thorny! I'm right there with you... A team cannot dig out from 1-15 by bringing in FAs. Great teams are built from the inside out and it takes time. These guys started with the defense and a franchise LT, it takes time. QBs do not fall from the sky, there is a lot of luck involved and it hasn't fallen our way yet.

I find it interesting over here in Tampa, When they won the SB the fans were all Gruden crazed. When they started to lose the fans formed a lynch mob and wanted him out. When they hired Morris everyone hated him. When they drafted Josh Freeman, it was the stupidest pick in the world... Last year they went 10-6 and now everyone is in love with Morris and Freeman? The blogs reflect this roller coaster sine wave. The attention span of the average NFL fan cannot tolerate the rebuilding process.

If a NFL team has an equally demanding owner with a short attention span, the team gets on a bad run that could last for years...

YEAA, what he said!! Was wondering where you disappeared to Pat...
Patrick I don't agree with all of that.. There is no time limit on improving a team. A team is like a car at the Datona raceway. They are either moving forward and passing cars or they are being passed. It is that simple. This team is stuck in the middle of the pack. Yet they are the ones " the management " that tell us our QB is not good enough. They are the ones that said we want to improve that position. The possibility to do so was there, and this management decided not to pull the trigger. If the management wants to talk the talk, then they must walk the walk,. Saying those things to the fans gives us false hope, the management let we the fans down. It's easy to see why the fans are on their back.

Wouldn't it have been more prudent of them to say at the end of last year we are sticking with Henne ? We think he needs more time to develop and we are going to try to put a stronger cast of players around him. At no time have they said that. So that leads the fans to think, hey they know what they are doing, but do they ? If so then don't send the fans mixed messages, try to be a little consistent for us. When the team leaves things up for speculation that is what they get from us speculation.
