What do the Miami Dolphins Have in Matt Moore?

In his first game against real competition that I have really watched attempting to determine whether he is the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback of the future, all I can say is that I am still not quite sure about Matt Moore.

Moore played pretty well against Dallas, but he still made some big mistakes and wasn't able to put the game away late. He was behind on a few throws, and if he hadn't fumbled the snap that gave the Cowboys the ball in the first half then we might be talking about a 4-game win streak for the Dolphins instead.

I am pretty sure that the Dolphins will be drafting a quarterback in the first round to be their starter as opposed to drafting one and expecting him to compete with Moore. Matt Moore still has a good shot at winning the starting job next year, but I don't see it happening. He is a good quarterback, but not great. He may have been able to lead the Dolphins to three wins by a big margin in the last three weeks, but the teams he got those wins against currently have a combined 12-18 record this season.

I do not dislike Matt Moore. I think that he has been great for the Dolphins. He has been able to get the ball into the right hands, something I don't think that Chad Henne was really able to do well enough. I just don't see him as a franchise quarterback.

One thing that Moore was able to do pretty well was throw the ball deep. What I noticed, though, is that he was a little under on most of his throws, which caused a lot of jump balls. Thankfully, the Dolphins receivers were able to come out with the ball.

I want to know what you guys think about Moore. Do you see him as better than any of the other quarterback prospects?

Thanks for stopping by, and let me know what you think.

Paul, you make good points on your post, I would also add that failure to execute on assignments and playing a neat game as reasons the Dolphins lost. Can't say that I'm too down on J. Long for having been penalized as much as he was for holding and like 2 false starts, because he had DeMarcus Ware in front of him, but other than that the rest of the team performance left a lot to be desired. The way I saw it, the Dolphins, AGAIN, failed to hold and protect a lead, by playing conservative on offence with over 4 minutes left in the clock and only a 2 point lead, and failing to stop the opposing team to a last-minute-come-from-behind-drive. I ranted on here on the last 2 posts before the game, the the battle cry in the sideline shold be "Play 4 full quarters" not play 3.5 quarters and pray during the last 4 minutes. They failed to bring out their killer instinct at the end and now have aloss to show for it.

Sorry, but I had to rant about the game and forgot your question.... I like Moore better than any other quarteback the Dolphins have had since Marino, with the exception of Pennington, and even Henne at the very beginning, when he enjoyed a very high QB rating... I guess before they damaged him.
1 reply · active 699 weeks ago
The Dolphins didn't damage Henne, he never got it done at Michigan either despite a lot of talent around him, he's a decent athlete with a real good arm but he just doesn't have IT you know, somethings missing with him, accuracy, leadership, reading defences? maybe one, maybe all, but he just isn't the answer. I hope they can be proud of their 3-13 season because it cost them a franchise QB in Andrew Luck, he has IT
I think lam305 is being hyper critical. Let's face it traveling to the "Death Star" (nicked named by people in Arlington) is not an easy task and I think the Dlphins played pretty well. We are expecting a the 3 and 7 team to travel to Dallas and win...not very many winning team accomplish that task. The team played fairly well and showed it can compete with the elite. As far as the QB, I think Matt Moore is doing a good job and deserves a shot at being the starting QB. The problem with the Dolphins is not the QB, or the coaching staff...it's the play at WR...let's face it as good as Brandon Marshall can be he also drops a lot of passes. The team needs another big play receiver at WR or TE.

Moore is inconsistent. One moment he is on target the next his pass is in the ground. He had 2 in the ground yesterday in the final drive. He is a back up at best If he had connected in the final drive we would be 4-7.

I agree T.B., a back up at best

Put the blame on an offensive line that allowed 4 sacks and let Moore get hit 5 other times. Bush and Thomas were getting gang tackled by 4 or 5 Cowboys and some of the O line stood and watched. Miami did a great job against Ware, but Ryan kept moving him from side to side pre-snap, causing several false start penalties as Miami shifted their blocking towards Ware. With the offense line so focused on Ware, other Cowboys pounded Moore.

Hey Canam, you are right about defending Ware, but the ripple effect that his presence caused . One fact fans seem to be ignoring which, in my opinion, is the one common denominator for just about every close game (the Jets game was a lot closer than the final score reflects), is the fact the Dolphins go flat in the 2nd half, 4th quarter, or allow teams to come back on their last drive while failing to put the game away on their last possesion. One could analyze all kinds of facts, data, stats, etc. . but until the Dolphins play to win, no matter what the score is, I will keep ranting, raving and jumping up and down like a little kid who wants ice cream before a meal, Forget prevent defence or conservative-run-out-the-clock offence, especially when leading by a TD or less. Like the wise man said once... " ÿou play to win the game"... Play-offs?! Play-offs?! Wait 'til next year!

Shawn, yes, I decided that it'd be more consitant if I changed to my Twitter account username. I forget to remind people on here that I'm the fan formerly known as "Lou"
Brandon Marshall's touch down while being choked out was a great play. It was frustrating watching the final 3 minutes knowing what was going to happen. Moore is not the future, although has done well enough considering the situation. Definitely drafting a first round QB is in order, the game did expose the weakness in our O-LINE.

Shawn, That's what I keep ranting about. It has been very frustrating indeed, watching the Dolphins go flat late in the games, and have teams come from behind, catch up and beat us. The only game that we went flat and still won was last week against Buffallo, but the game was out of reach for the Bills by then, had the Fins been playing New England, they might've caught up. This is a pattern which goes back to at least the 2nd game of the season, if not further back. I like Moore, and I don't mind him being a back up to Barkley or Luck.
I agree, I like Griffin III as well.
if ya think that Moore sucks, then let's put in his backup for the rest of the season !!! We are NOT going to find ANOTHER Marino. Not possible !! Outside of Pennington, I like Moore !!!

Jake, I like Moore too, and I agree that with the exception of Pennington, he's the one I've Iliked and trusted the most since Marino . I said this in one of my above comments. I think Marino, Favre, Montana, Rogres, and even Unitas, are all in a league of their own and while to get a clone of any of them is only possible through the miracle of some sci fy event in the future, drafting someone for next year whose name can be mentioned in the same sentence as those elite QB's, is not only possible , but a very real possibility. I like Moore, but I don't want to just settle.
I agree with Lou. We can't settle. Keep drafting a quarterback until you get it right.
Paul what do you think about putting Devlin in? To me it is time to see him in action.
I want to see Devlin, but I can't see him playing this season. Moore hasn't been bad enough to warrant benching, and the Dolphins are going to want to see whether they can rely on Moore or if they have to draft a QB in the 1st. I am guessing that they realize that Moore most likely isn't the answer, but they want to make absolutely sure.

It is possible that he comes in Week 17 against the Jets, but don't expect him any sooner unless Moore starts playing really bad. You also have to consider JP Losman, who is the QB that replaced Moore when the Dolphins were blowing out Buffalo. While I think it would be smarter to put in Devlin and see what he is made of, I can see Miami putting in Losman instead.
To me putting in Losman is a waste, we have seen what he can do. Moore has heart, he is mobile, he tries, but truth be told haven't we been through this before. Thank you Paul for your response.
Sorry I just now replied Shawn, but I completely agree with you. The reason I think that they would put him in first is that they had him in against the Bills
No apology needed, thanks for responding.
This game goes to show just how bad the QB play was in the past when Matt Moore has lead the team to 3 wins and 2 losses. Matt makes enough plays to keep the Dolphins in the game, but we don't have enough talent in key areas of the team to secure a lead or take over the game when it is needed.

With 4 minutes remaining in the game, there were a number of ways we could have won that game. We were unable to do any of them. 2 time consuming first downs would have put the game away, and we went 3 and out. We punted the ball and they had close to a 30 yard punt return. Then they simply did what we were unable to do, and moved down the field at will, with little resistance. The defensive line front 3 had no pressure mostly all day, and very few tackles. Odrick had no tackles and no pressure the entire day. Lankford had 1 tackle and no pressure. Clearly you need better production out of those 2 guys than that. The offensive line was nearly as bad, they were so worried about Ware, the rest of there Dline stepped up and shut the run down, and Moore had plenty of pressure to deal with.

We still had a chance to win the game because of the defensive play, and Matt Moore playing well enough to win the game. They simply must draft a QB in the first round if there is one available at their turn. Or move up and get one. Do what it takes to get a QB in the draft. Trade all the draft picks this year if need be to get one. I don't care how they do it.
( The last thing I want to read is 13kv explaining why we didn't take a QB in the next draft. :)) Draft one and he won't have to write that story. )

Otto it's nice to see you chiming in, but you said something I'm going to take exception to You said the problem was not in the coaching staff... Uh yes it is. I would go as far to say the entire experiment of the Trifecta was a complete failure. They need to be replaced from top to bottom and everything in between. 4 years is long enough. NO MORE !!

The one good thing coming out that game was they played competitively. They were in the game all day and they didn't crumble when something went against them. I believe that is because they have faith in Matt Moore, some thing they haven't had since Pennington went down.
3 replies · active 699 weeks ago
We have the technology, we can rebuild Pennington....... :)
If Barkley grows 2 inches, I'd take him @ # 1 over Luck, but seeing how thats unlikely I'll be stoked w'Barkley or Landry (Football) Jones wherever we end-up picking a QUARTERBACK in the FIRST ROUND!!

Inspite of liking both MMoore & CHenne !!
Riverdog you have a valid point concerning the coaching staff however; I believe that the ownership's mishandling of the Harbaugh talks and the GM's horrible decision making is more of a problem then the coaching staff. Continuity in the coaching staff is key. I will agree that drafting a QB is key but there must be a mentor ship or we could have another ruined QB.
We lost because we reverted back to same old crap that led to 0-7... I was about ready to throw mashed potato balls at the damn TV. They ran nearly the same play on first down the entire second half, run between the tackles, run between the tackles, run between the tackles. That was clearly Daboll's worst game in 4 weeks. 2nd and 8, 2nd and 9, 2nd and 7, what the hell was up with that? I yelling at them to throw the damn ball, but nooooooooooo the same damn play! I won't put this all on Moore. He didn't play well and looked tight, trying to guide the ball instead of throwing it, but the play calling put him in and the offense in a terrible positions that made the offense easy to defend again. The coaching staff wanted to beat to beat Dallas so bad they forgot about coaching and running the plays that won them 3 games in a row.

Forcing the run and not taking what the defense was giving. Moore played poorly, the dropped snap lost the game. But the play calling was horrendous. They saw Moore was not having a good day and instead of trying to give him easy throws on 1st down to loosen him up, they tried to ground it out... I thought the coaching staff was getting better but this game again makes me question their ability to adjust to what they are seeing on the field.

Mashed potato balls at the TV???? That has got to become a classic... one of your best quotes, if not the best , and you know I'm a fan of your writings. Back to football, I don't like Bush running between the tackles and I have said this before. Yes, sometimes he gets lucky and gets yardage, but I'd like to see Bush catching short passes coming out of the back field, catching sideline passes behind the screen, and let him get chunks on his own with his speed and ellusiveness... also, I'd like to see Bush on the end-around. Now, run or pass, it's like they (the offence) were affraid to get a 1st down, dropped balls, passes thrown behind the reciever. Athletes sometimes tense up and fail to rise up to the moment. The sharpness, confidence, and looseness the Dolphins show during the first half, seems to go out the window late in the game and they start playing not to lose the game but they have to remember you play to win the game... protecting a 2 point lead with over 4 minutes left doen't work in the NFL.
Patricks tv has a buffett pile and a few dead domesticated pets piled around it, he's always throwin somethin at it after a loss :)... Poor Kittens, Puppies, and Goldfish :( ...
Sadd, but otherwise nothin but proud of goin into a 1st place team (on a 3 game winning streaks) house on Thanksgiving day batteling it out with 11 vs 12 players for 60 minutes through 5 lead changes and coming out on the losing end!! We've allowed one TD in 16 qtrs, (the one w'one min b/4 the half) was on Pouncey!! With 55 seconds left in that half we didn't allow that blunder to bust our bubble, and drove for a FG and one point halftime defecit 10-9.. All things the same other than Pouncey's premature high-snap it's 19 -13 with seconds remaining.. Might'a still lost but a great effort considering Romo pulled rabbits outta his ass all afternoon as our pass rushers examined his enternal vital organs with consistency, several times the force of the hit is what propelled end-over end completions to Witten on the final drive, and other receivers throughout the game.. FIVE lead changes and a final tick FG resulting in a 1 point loss on the road to a 1st place team is NO-REASON whatsoever to feel any worse about the team than one did b/4 the game!!!! GOFINS!!!

13, you write "...batteling it out with 11 vs 12 players for 60 minutes through 5 lead changes .." I agree with almost the entire statement except 2 words "60 minutes" To me it was 55 and a half minutes.
The balls ACTUALLY IN MOTION for approximately only 12 minutes per game giving each team approximately 6 minutes of offense (if the time of possesion is fairly equal)... The other 2 hrs and 48 minutes of tv time the ball sits idally @ the LOS!! So, really we played well for 5 minutes or so , and not so well for whatever remaining time that things didn't go so smoothly, while Dallas was just as inepdt during most of their drives also, they were just fortunate enought to have the final possesion.....
Iam305Jules's avatar

Iam305Jules · 700 weeks ago

Wow, that explanation was deep. Our Dolphins weren't able to drive down or even get a first down on their last possesion... I mean, it wasn't Griese against Fouts engaged in an offensive shoot out and both teams would drive down the field and score on every possesion, so naturally the last team with the ball at the end of regulation, would inevitably win ot tie up the game and send it into overtime... I remember one game that went like into triple overtime...by the way that was real funny about throwing stuff at the tv including domesticated animals.
Ball ACTUALLY IN PLAY for approximately 16 minutes per game, equating to 8 offensive minutes per team w'60 plays per team @ 4 seconds on average per play !! Above post was for 45 plays per team !!

JuSayin :) !!
Well, for how many minutes did every thing go right for Dallas ??

On your assessment of Matt Moore's play the last four games:
"I think he's playing well. I really think that he's done a tremendous job along with his coaches of grasping the offense and really starting to feel comfortable back there. He's got a little bit of presence about him to slide in the pocket and the buy time, which obviously helps you and I think he's thrown the ball with great touch. The ball to (Davone) Bess in the middle of the field, the one-handed catch that ball gets up and down at the middle of the field. That's a really hard throw to make. And then he makes the throw to (Brian) Hartline on the sideline. He throws the underthrown fade to Hartline that he comes back and catches and the deep ball to Brandon (Marshall) so there's four different throws there that this guy made. He practices really hard. He practices with a good purposes and he's getting better."
TS, here and above!!

""And that's probably the most disappointing thing in the ball game for me is just the number of big plays made in that game yesterday both offensively and defensively and we just didn't come away with a win."
Like I said KV, I didn't think Moore had a bad game, I thought he was a little tight and was trying to steer the ball. I also think the marginal snaps are on the QB to bring in. I agree with Lou, I mean 305, Romo was pulling some crap out his arse. He was very lucky because he was throwing some of those balls up for grabs. I thought we were just a step; slow all day. One step from sacks, one step from INTs, one step big plays...

I will say one more time... They got too predictable on 1st down. Daboll had gotten away from it, and I think he reverted back.

Patrick, you mentioned play calling. Remember that unbalanced line play call where Moore and Pouncey had one lineman on their left and everybody else on the right side... the one where Reggie ran right and got smashed for a loss? That Wildcat has got to be running out of lives!
When we threw on first, there was success. Continually running on first down was also a throwback to Henning's style of play calling. I cringed when I heard Sparano say that he had Parcells' Thhanksgiving Day playbook.
You must mean you agree w'me, cuz I'm the one that suggested that Romo "pulled rabbits outta his arse allday"!!
The level of expectation for Matt Moore has been low, so when he does good things it is easier to find all the QB in him. In Carolina he did the same things, came in off the bench and played adequately. But he couldn't unseat Delhomme and was benched for Clausen. Moore is not going to rise above this because he doesn't possess top tier skill, we don't have the coaching, superior running game or lights out defense to support him. For now he is a Dolphin and we have adopted him, he is doing what is being asked. Our lack of having a TOP TIER QB over the years allows us to have the ability to disect and defend every QB that does OK for us. Bottom line "you can't polish a turd"
I watched our team and saw some good things to build on. Although he did not play a stellar game, Matt Moore spread the ball around well and helped the passing game. Thomas did produce and Bush juked a few times for good gains. The O Line definitely did not handle Ryan's "Jailbreak Defense". Sure they were focused on Ware but Daboll could have rolled Moore out to keep him away from the rush more. Shula did that with marino and Griese when the opponent had a fierce pass rush or rusher. The D stepped up at times and it was sweet seeing both Smith and Davis getting an INT chance and holding onto the ball. I was disappointed to see Rmo get out of the grasp and throw those completions. The two blown snaps were not the only difference in the final score. Don't forget the missed FG attempt and four trips to the Red Zone without a TD. We had the game in our grasp and couldn't seal the deal. We play Oakland next and they are an enigma with a depleted offense but a ferocious defense. Get back on track team!!
I was overall satisfied with the energy and grit that the Fins showed on Thanksgiving day. This is the best defense the Cowboys have faced all year (and yes they played the Jets). Without the gift on the 5 yard line we win this game. Offense also showed up against a good defense. The play of Brandon, Hartline and Bess, and also the contiuing reemergence of Bush was great to see. However, to the point of this post, the difference was quarterback play. I think Matt Moore has made a huge difference to the Dolphins and has done a good job of moving the offense and not making the backbreaking mistakes (until this game) he gives us a better chance to win that Henne did and the offense responds to his leadership well. The difference is that Romo is the kind of QB we are all looking for. forget coaches, receivers, game plans, calls....he singlehandedly willed the Cowboys down the field twice in the late stages of the game, making three ridiculous throws when having a defensive player inside his jersey. That was the difference. Matt Moore can take a sound team with a good defense and running game deep into the playoffs, and will continue to get better. He wont Brady/Brees/Manning/Rodgers teams to a win singlehandedly.
We could do much much worse than Matt, and he deserves our support. Wish we had someone of the elite caliber mentioned before, I dont think Andrew Luck has the stuff, and looking at college kids its a total crapshoot.
I have two favorite teams every week in the NFL, The dolphins and whoever is playing the Cowboys. this week they both lost.....time to drink.....
BigReyOut
Matt Moore is what he is, I remember when Carolina first picked him up I thought, Man i wish Miami would have gotten that guy he is a good QB. Then he became the starter the next year and couldn't hold it together and the next year he lost out to Clausen (loser). He is doing a great job in his role as the back-up coming in to win the starting job next year. But he is just a stop gap for a 1st round rookie next year and the start of the season to give the rookie some reps and time. I have not been too impressed with Luck in his last couple of big games, Barkely seems OK but Kellen Moore has proven himself as a winner and a winner of BIG games that he wasnt supposed to win, and he has done it for 4 years. That is the guy I would throw my support behind for the Fins to get. Anyone else like the Blue fielder? Maybe we could paint landshark stadion aqua???

I'll second Moore, Kellen Moore! Most wins in NCAA history. How can you beat a proven winner?
I like Kellen Moore, ( he's a winner simular to Tebow), however as suggested for over a yr (like Tebow he doesn't have the attributes of a NFL QB) though from a different NFL aspect!!

IF Kellen Moore becomes an NFL starter he'll be the shortest 6-0, lightest 195, and slowest 4.95 startin QB in the league!!

He's smaller than (4 time Bowl winner) Pat White, and yesss he's a farr better passer than PW, but simular to PW ONE good hit terminates his NFL career!!

While KMoore isn't a 1st round pick, and we HAVE TO GET a legit 1st rnd QB!! Lucks outta range cuz of all the hype while (Barkley, Jones) are likely as good if not better NFL prospects anyways!!
Lucks a BIGGG strong, powerful when running CPennington that likes to dink&dunk while relying on his teams running game, though he does have a stronger arm than CP should the occasion arise!! PS, nothin wrong w'a big, strong dinkin&dunkin CP, but he's outta reach for us!!

Kenny, don't be surprised if Moore is taken in the first. Griffin is probably going to stay another year and there is a very good chance that Barkley stays another year, too. This QB class that used to look very good is starting to look more and more thin.
I haven't heard about Griffin staying at Baylor next year. Where did that come from?
Griffin is a junior and strikes me as a very smart, intellectual kid, so I expect him to stay an additional year to finish his education.
Dez Bryant fielded our final punt @ his own 16 returning it to the 36!!Romo took over at the Cowboys 36-yard line with 2:59 left. Jason Witten went into the huddle and told teammates, "We need this W, whatever it takes. No penalties. We've ...got to get it there," left guard Montrae Holland said.

Witten caught consecutive passes to put Dallas at the outer edge of Bailey's range. Then it was up to Murray to drive the ball closer.

With blood streaked across the white numbers on his blue jersey, Murray churned out 27 yards on the next five carries. His constant gains -- between 3 and 9 yards, including one where he went down rather than stretch for more and risk going out of bounds -- took the clock from 2:41 to :17...

So why is the loss pinned on the O?? Other than Pouncey's premature snap and Moore's inability to field a high snap that he wasn't expecting, our O went toe to toe w'a high powered O @ their house and deserves no ridicule whatsoever inspite of having stalled drives along the way (a part of EVERY NFL game) for EVERY NFL team !!

GOFINS!!

If Andrew Luck is smart and he is. He will stay away from the combine. His mystique will serve him well, in place of throwing next to some of the big arms he will be compared to at the combine. When he plays they always mention his WRers are not much help to him, but he has great TEs. When I watch him he doesn't try to get the ball to the outside guys. Is it because they aren't that good, or because he can't get the ball out there to them ?
Jules, I believe the triple OT game you're talkin-bout was Fins @ KC playoff game, a game that Shula, Griese should have lost if not for a Steneruad missed FG @ the end of regulation, followed by another Steneruad miss in OT, followed by a Garo miss, followed by a Steneruad miss, followed by a Garo game winner near the end of triple OT!!

DAMN, why didn't that mighty Dolphin team simply walk it into the EZ on their first OT possesion rather than missing multiple FGs through triple OT??
Hmmmm, quite the head-scratcher!!

Yeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa GOFINS TEAMS , UNDEFEATED to unvictorious !!
Matt's a very good QB, despite 3 botched snaps... The fact that we're in every game & actually have a legit chance to win says alot. The O-line was HORRENDOUS! Long had 4 penaltys, 4 sacks, 1 missed FG & dropped passes (Marshall had aligator arms on 2 plays) & Daboll insisted on running Bush up the middle when it failed time after time. I do like the fact that Moore has the confidence to take shots down field. KEEP Moore & Trade for GB Flynn (He's a FA next year) & Dump Henne
Is it possible to draft a quarterback who is gonna be Miami's savior & lead us into the playoffs next year? I really think NOT. Just right off the bat insert this QB & turn him loose?
canamdolphin's avatar

canamdolphin · 700 weeks ago

I wonder if Daboll does that in Miami? He's a good match for Nolan, who passed on Aaron Rodgers for Alex Smith because he thought Rodgers' personality would clash with his. Maybe that's why Nolan sits in the coaches booth!
What McCoy has learned in his second season is that
"""progress isn’t always as tangible as he’d like it to be, and that patience is an underrated quality""".

"""From the outside it’s easy to point a finger and say, ‘Look, same old Browns.’ It’s not gonna happen overnight. As frustrating as that is, that’s reality.”""

SMART KID, now if only our fans could figure-out the same...

Fans cheer for progress, should be patient while breaking even and understanding during regression. In 2008 we had progression, on the basis of good fortune and surprise. In 2009 we had regression on the basis of injuries, fitting in rookies and poor decision making from management. In 2010 we had breaking even on the basis of adding Mike Nolan, our defense rose up and like it or not Brandon Marshal. But poor o-line,offensive play calling and weak qb play caused another 7-9 season. In 2011 Parcells is gone, now time for Ireland and Sparano to shine. Henning is gone, great there. Nolan is coming back along with Oderick defense should be solid. But then the failure of courting a coaching prospect all in Sparano's face, hiring a ? of a o-coordinator,CBA lockout, good draft and poor FA. Bush ok, Burnett whatever and Moore did not get the most welcome reception. Letting Ronnie and Ricky go can be justified, Polite's release can not. Then this season starts injury, regression, progression, HOPE then regression again. Looks like 09 and 10 all over again. Call it ground hog day, call it Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, i'm tired of the same old B.S. and coming out of it disappointed.
There's 2 other QB's that should be thrown into the mix; Houstons- Case Keenum/ 6'2/ 210lbs/ 43 TD's & 3 INT's, also Oklahomas- Brandon Weeden/ 6'4/ 218lbs/ 34TD's & 12 INT's although personally I'd like to trade for Packers QB Flynn.
