Was the Pass Interference Called against Sean Smith the Right Call?

Hey fellow Miami Dolphins fans.

We were having a little discussion earlier today about the pass interference called against Sean Smith last night when he intercepted Cam Newton's pass. Well, thanks to @Jmpasq of Draft Breakdown we have the video now.

Here it is:

Watch Sean grab Steve Smith's arm and hold on to it. Seems like a good call to me.

Thanks for stopping by. Also, do me a favor. Bookmark Draft Breakdown and follow @Jmpasq on twitter. He's the master of cutting up film. Seriously, if you're watching a highlight film of a college player on YouTube, there's a 90% chance he's the guy who did it. Show him some support by checking out his site when you're looking for draft analysis. He was kind enough to make this cut-up for us, so we need to show him some support.

Thanks for stopping by. So, you tell me: was it a pass interference on Sean Smith or not?

Their arms may have bumped each other, but I don't see anything resembeling a grab of anyones arm or jersey while if there was it was an equal distribution while the guy with inside position gets the benifit of the doubt, when the DB is watching the ball he has every bit as much right to the ball as the WR, especially when the defender has the inside position.. The only penalty on this play if there was a penalty at all was on the guy behind the guy that caught the ball!!
And I'd say that if the roles were reversed, if an opposing defender made that play on our WR, it's not a penalty !!!

You're listening too hard to the color commentator, while the commentators from my tape said the exact opposite..

The only time that Sean may have grabbed was when his body blocked our view, and the flag was thrown after the catch/int several seconds after the point of Sean's body blocking our view, after that point Sean was too busy securing the ball to be grabbing Steve's arm.. It was a college call, and "" this is the NFL and thats stands for Not For Long, if the refs keep making calls like that I'll be baggin groceries"" Jerry Glanville..

I thought it was a bullshit call when I first saw it and after seeing it again, it's still a bullshit call. But, the games don't count right now, so it's inconsequential. It was nice to see Sean Smith hang on to an INT, though!
Hey Folks, I'm watchin the nyets vs giants game, a bitter inner city rivalry where both teams try real hard to win even though it's a pre-season game... Neither Offense had 100 yards in the 1st half !!!!!! The Giant's are ahead 26 to 3 with only one offensive TD !!!!!!!!!! The fabulous nyets have scored 9 points in two games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And people are gettin all whoooa is me over our FINS O & D backups ??? LOL !!!!

Yeah the Jets look even worse than we did.
Yeah but they have Tebow!!! LOL
And Tony S. is their new O Coordinator. Hmmmmmmmmm ya think there's a parallel there?
Look at 40 seconds. Smith reaches up his right hand and pulls on Steve Smith's left arm.

and the flag was thrown from the opposite side of the field 5 seconds or so after that 40 second mark!!!

I dunno how big your monitor is, but I watched it on a 5o inch high def TV at reg speed and Slo-mo a handful of times, and all I see is the rubbing of forearm hairs with eachother...

You might get the answer you want if you ask the question of Panther fans you saboteur you, LOL, but most in the know unbiased fans will tell you there is no penalty there from either player..
The contact was incidental Steve Smith's progress wasn't hindered he was still stride for side. Steve is 5'8" Shawn is 6'3" when both are stride for stride it looks like a mismatch. Shawn's arm looked like at about 43 seconds to be grabbed by Steve I had a neutral person look at it who brought it to my attention. It was a bad call.
It was a BULLSHIT CALL. Plain and simple. If you don't agree you're an idiot.

Thanks man. Keep the stories coming. I appreciate the job you do. Sincerely
Hey, hey, hey, no need for that tommy boy. You can disagree all you want but don't start calling people names.
lol maybe I shouldn't have reacted like that. I was kind of kidding and kind of not
Sometimes Paul you have to do that:)
Don't do that Tommy.
I don't know Paul. I'm not one that can be objective in this matter but I don't think this was anything more than hand checking. That happens all the time in the NFL. When any player has position over another as Sean Smith did over Steve Smith I would be hard pressed to say Dolphin Smith interfered with Panther Smith. If Sean was trailing him that would make a difference, but that didn't happen Sean simply ate Steve up and had him for lunch. At least that's my take on it, and I'm sticking with it. :))

I don't know. I just feel like he was holding Smith's arm for a good part of the route. It was in no way blatant, I just don't think it was a bad call.
Each of them have a right for the ball, and what happened on that play goes on all the time in the NFL. The referee's are not from the NFL, and aren't accustomed to NFL standards. If the refs. were looking at this based on their experience in College ball, then I suppose they could call interference on that play.

I never thought I would say this, bring back our referee's and stop messing with our game !!!
these guy aren't even college refs, I heard one guy hadn't refed a football game since a junior high game in 2010

That was a horrible call it was just hands touching that is not a penalty
This is just a moot point.....the Fins played terrible.

Either way, it doesn't seem like a clear call, as witnessed in this debate. A lot of other weird calls by these fill-ins. Let's all hope the real refs come back soon and are better than the scrubs.

The scabs have two more weeks to get their shit together or they will affect the outcome of real games.
They were running side by side with sean right there, steve just happened to get inside Sean's arm when he raised his hand to jump for the ball, Sean did NOT reach out and has every right ot his position, he had great coverage, Great play Sean!
Another college call that went against us was when D player #50 Olivier Vernon jumped the snap (college), but clearly got back before the snap (NFL)... Before you know it, a player is gonna be ruled down once his knee touches the ground without contact..

I agree with CanAm, "" The scabs have two more weeks to get their shit together or they will affect the outcome of real games. "" !!!!!!!!
Let's hope that we see a cohesive game in Number Three. I would really like to see us do well against the 'Boys in Dallas and the Texans in Houston. I hope to be screaming from the stands in Houston if all goes well:)) Daughter wants to take me there. I should call her TXDOLFAN2:)

They ( the Smiths) were trying to catch the ball. It is NOT, in my humblest of opinions, pass interference. Why? Because Sean turned his head back looking for the ball. I believe, a non-replacement ref. would not have thrown the flag just because of that.
