Ryan Tannehill: the Question and Answer for the Miami Dolphins

How well will the Miami Dolphins do this season?

It's one simple question, but there are so many possibilities. So many different things could go right or wrong for the Dolphins. It's impossible to know what will really happen.

The truth, though, is the above question isn't even the right question to ask. The real question is actually also the answer to the question above (am I making sense here?). The real question is this:

How well will Ryan Tannehill perform this season?

That's the real question, because how well he does will dictate how well Miami does. A quarterback is so crucially important that even if you surround a poor one with a top-shelf group of players you will still struggle to be successful. Miami has brought in loads of talent on both sides of the ball, but if Ryan Tannehill isn't able to hold up his end of the bargain then none of it will matter.

Please, Ryan, save me
It's almost unfair to put that much pressure on a second year quarterback. Jobs are riding on his performance. Tannehill holds Jeff Ireland's job in his hands. Ireland has done an excellent job of building a team with real potential, but if his hand-picked quarterback doesn't work out then it won't matter.

Heck, if he does poorly enough he could put Joe Philbin's job on the line. Philbin would seem to be safe for at least this year, but a three or four win season could change that. No, I don't expect Miami to win three or four games, but anything is possible (any given Sunday, right?).

Tannehill has been overshadowed and overlooked this past season. This year he has the chance to shine.

Can he do it?
Can Ryan Tannehill carry this team? Does he have what it takes to bring Dolphins fans the winning record that they're clamoring for?

Absolutely. Now that he has weapons he will start to blossom. Tannehill is a great quarterback. He's been vastly underrated this year because his numbers haven't been spectacular. No one seems to care that his receiving corps was one of the worst in the NFL.

Numbers. Numbers. Numbers.

The average fan will just look at statistics and not bother studying the player on the field. You guys can't be average fans. Don't allow yourselves to only look at numbers and not bother watching a player play before you form an opinion of them. Statistics are nice. In general they give you a good idea of how well a player can play (except for cornerbacks. Conventional cornerback statistics are almost worthless), but you have to watch the tape too.

Want an example where statistics can be misleading? Just look at Christian Ponder and compare his numbers to Ryan Tannehill. Ponder threw six more touchdowns than Tannehill and one less interception.

Is Ponder better than Tannehill? No, not by a mile, but Ponder had one of the best receivers in the NFL in Percy Harvin and the incredible Adrian Peterson taking pressure off him. Tannehill had the "pretty good" Brian Hartline and Reggie Bush, who are far inferior to Harvin and Peterson.

Statistics are great, but they're not always the whole picture.

Tannehill has the talent and the football IQ to be a successful quarterback. Now he has the necessary tools to go earn that success. It's going to be a fun season to watch.

A Prediction...
Here's what I envision happening for the Miami Dolphins this season.

Tannehill will do just like Mike Sherman predicted and be the "most improved" quarterback in the NFL statistically, which really won't be hard for him to do. He has a lot of weapons at his disposal and another year of experience under his belt.

The Dolphins as a team perform well, despite a difficult early stretch of games and finish the season as a possible wild card at 9-7.

What do you guys think? Will Ryan Tannehill carry Miami enough to earn a winning record? How many games will the Dolphins win? Let me hear it.

One thing that you didn't mention at all Paul, that to me is every bit as important is, will the OL be good enough to protect RT? Our OL was bad last year, they didn't protect well, nor did they open many holes for the RB's, I know some folks here on the Shout didn't think that the OL play was that bad, Dog and I would disagree, but hey, we're only 2 opinions. I think if the line plays better, and RT improves the accuracy on his deep ball, the team could be pretty good. My prediction is 8-8 with the possibility of 9-7, I would really rather hold my record prediction until after the preseason is over, so this is a preliminary guess.

I had the offensive line in the "doghouse" more than any other player other than Dan Carpenter. There were to many games where we had no running game at all. That was the reason that unit ended up in the doghouse. Reggie Bush gained most of his yards in about 3 games. Other than those games the blocking and Reggie Bush were less than average.

With one more year of experience for Martin and Pouncey and the addition of Clabo and Lewis, I am hoping for the best that this group will improve. One thing for sure if Lewis can replace Jerry this line will be much more mobile than last years group. That should fit the WCO a little better.
Paul there are so many things we don't know yet it's hard to make any predictions. The only few things that I have heard this off season is J Martan has gained about 15 lbs, and Tannehill is working out at in Bradenton Fl. I have no idea if Wallace, Gibson, or Hartline are with him.

From what I have seen so far, the only team that seems to be improved over last year in the AFC East are the Dolphins. At this time I can see us going 5 and 1 in our own division. That will go a long way getting us into the playoffs, but I'm not making any predictions with out seeing a few pre season games.

Of the 5 QBs that entered the league last year. Tannehill and Luck learned the most about being an NFL QB. RG3 and Wilson depended on their legs more than anything else. That should bode well for Tannehill this coming year.
1 reply · active 622 weeks ago
If you notice,Tanny and Luck didn't rely as much on their legs to make plays, either. The only QB I can recall that lasted quite awhile making plays with his legs was Fran Tarkenton. Anyone know of other QBs like that who played in the league awhile?
With a year under their belts, I see a loosening of the reins for both HC/QB !! This results in The Clydesdale's at the LOS not being able to help themselves from being more effective at pulling the Miller Wagon along as well as protecting the guy riding shot-gun, and Wallace at a full gallop can't possibly hurt either !!!

Minus all of that with this years schedule, I see o12's team goin 9-7..
With all of that versus this years schedule I see o13's team goin 10-6 plus, as long as the Stallion Sturgis doesn't throw a few game winning shoe's !!!!

Barring circumstantial evidence being introduced, Of Course !!!

I'm with Kenny on this one...
I think coach Philbin will have a lot to do with this years success. He will have Ryan ready to play and win.
The line is improved and the offense is much better and ready to go. The defense is also improved and it was very good last year.
Nice to see Clabo in the fold... Now it's time to settle in for some business. This team is completely different that the one we watched last year. At least half of the starting line up has changed. The early schedule is tough and it may take some time for this new team to learn to play together, if they can come out of the gate at 3-3 then there is a good chance they could have more than 10 wins. If they come out slow 1-5 we will be waiting for 2014, but by mid-season, we'll know what the future holds. This is definitely a team on the rise.
We will be better than last year because of one year under JP and the additions/deletions this off-season. I predicted 9-7 awhile back but after looking at the schedule, 8-8 may be the best we do. My rationale is like Patrick said about the length of time this team takes to gel and work as one. There is no magic wand for that. Can the OL protect better and open some holes? I believe so and we will probably have two new faces starting there so we have to get better. I liked the point of Tanny working out in Bradenton and the question if Wallace, Hartline and Gibson are there with him. They need to build their timing. Shifting focus to the defense, the possibilities this year are exciting and the offense should help them out this year by keeping them off the field as much. Our D is going to be a nightmare for opposing teams.
Last year's team could have very easily been 10-6 except for it's self inflicted wounds.... New York OT loss, Arizona OT loss, the Indy heartbreaker. Plus, except for 5 minutes of self destruction... they played the Texans heads up. Obviously, there were growing pains regarding which Dolphins team showed up. The Tennessee game and the final game against NE come to mind. I think the moves this year will definitely be upgrades. Reggie was too much of a east-west runner when holes were clogged. Lamar Miller will break through those clogs as he demostrated last year. I'm not sure Daniel Thomas with all his injuries will pan out. The O-line has to be better than last year's. If John Jerry shows up out of shape... he needs to go. Finally... some TE's. Goodbye Eggnog!! Good riddence to Sean Smith... all talk, no walk. Was tired of his highlight reels of getting burned.
10-6 with one win in the playoffs. If we had just won the close ones last yr we would have been there. If we can't improve with all the add ons, there isn't much hope for this team. I guarantee that we will complete a ton of short and intermediate passes with Wallace stretching the field. What I am worried about is the running game, or the lack there in. Time will tell what comes to pass, but as a fan who has been watching this team for 40 plus years, I am very excited about what to expect this season, instead of just HOPING, once again.

Not to stray too far off topic here, but not being in Florida I only hear bits and pieces of whats going on. So what the hell is going on with the stadium? I'm hearing that the House Speaker didn't even bring it up to vote on the improvements, and now maybe the team might be for sale so that the new owner can possibly move the team? Is any of this correct, or is it just a bunch of roosters bantering around? Supposedly Mike Dee said something to the effect of "no tax payer money, then no Super Bowl, next, maybe no team". Now I have no idea if thats correct or not, so I'm asking my friends down in the Sunshine State, they aren't going to move our Dolphins are they?
Yes Buck, the Speaker of the House failed to bring it up for a vote... The referendum needed to pass through the house and then there was supposed to be a vote in Dade county. The vote had to be completed by the time of the Owners meeting which is later this month because the are voting on two SBs, I think 2014 and 2015. So what this means is Miami will not host either one of the those games. When the House convenes again they can put it up for vote and if the voters approve they can still renovate but will have to wiat for the NFL to vote on the 2016 SB site. Most of the other talk was scare tactics trying to force the vote. Ross has said repeatedly that he has no plans to sell or move the team. Of course, people say a lot of stuff and change their mind once a zillion dollars is waved in front of their greedy little eyes.

Thanks P, I have just heard little tid bits along the way, I knew they were trying to get all the renos done so we could try and host SB 50. I sure hope they get everything passed because I don't want to find a new team after 40+ years rooting for the same team.
Patrick was being very nice to the dysfunctional Senator Will Weatherford from Pasco County FL near Tampa. Lots of Dollars being floated around in this State. WPB is trying to get 100 million dollars for a spring training complex that would house 2 major league teams. The Bucs are also thinking about asking for money to improve the Bucs stadium for a run at a super bowl.

When it's all said and done Will Weatherford F'ed with my Dolphins. If you do that I will call you out before your drool
has chance to fall off of your chin. Weatherford is an A HOLE.

Politicians. Can't live with them, can't kill them !!! :))

Patrick is right. Ross said about a month ago he has no intention of selling the team or moving it, regardless of what happens in referendum vote.
Sorry everyone Will Weatherford is a State Congressman, not a State Senator. Either way he is stall an A HOLE. :))
Regardless, he deserves to be in effigy in front of the stadium.
12 and 4 win the division and just miss the AFC Championship. Hey i can dream if I want to!
My big screen tv broke down last year and I had to watch all the games on a 32 inch pre HD tv ,!!

I got my new 55 inch high-definition Toshiba yesterday and watched our taped victory over the propellers, what a game!! The one that we scored on the opening drive and followed that with an on-sides kick recovery that led to another score.. Soliai got an int a lil later with El-Guanno poised to pass as Nolan Carroll snuck around from behind to jar the ball a few feet forward into Soliai's hands, and then just after that Jimmy Wilson blocked their punt into the hands of Olivier Vernon for another TOUCHDOWN, and that was just the first quarter, WOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO GOFINS!!!!

I'm ready, can't wait, BADDDD-ASSSSSS TELEVISION, GIGGGGGGITTTTTTYYYYY !!!

With the tough schedule I think you guys are over the top with wishful thinking. I do not think we will win our 1st five games and that will put us in the hole. I would love to make 500 and hopefully maybe bring all the magic you all are praying for but time will tell. I place any firm judgement on the Aug 4th game, see how they play against Dallas, and then the pre season.
Come on Polly, jump on the Dolphin love train! We need all we can get!!!

What about the week one Browns ??
Forgot about them. YES!! Thanks Kenny:)

newengfinfan · 622 weeks ago

I'm with Paul, looking over a first part of the season we have some tough games in Colts, Falcons, Saints and Baltimore. I see us taking 1 from that group. So the other question marks isn't how well we built our team but how well the teams we'll be playing be built when we face them. i.e. Baltimore lost a lot of talent on defense but had a decent draft. We reverse order in NE this year, playing them in NE then them playing us at home in December. Love to say the heat would be better if we got them 1st at home, but it hasn't worked out for us well. I think this team could actually go 12-4. I see us beating Cleveland, Cincy, Tampa, both Jets and Buffalo and splitting one with NE and Carolina. San Diego, Falcons, Saints, Baltimore could be our tough matches. So big improvement over 5-11 that i said last year. Think Dolphins have the play makers to make 12-4.
1 reply · active 622 weeks ago
Now if we could only play Buffalo in warmer temp. :))
You know what? It's so funny to see everyone looking at the schedule and predicting they won't do well. As Paul indicated, you Shout folks need to look beyond the stats. And this holds true of how many games the team can win. Would any of you predicted Indy winning 11 games last year after going 1-15 the year before? No, none of you would have predicted that. So why are most of you saying they won't win more than 8 games. The reason is you are conditioned to think they will lose. It's that simple.

I don't see why this team should not win 10 or 11 games and we should be expecting that. I can tell you one thing, Philbin is not telling his players to shoot for 8 wins. I commend those that think Miami can win more than 10 games. Good for you, because I think the team is improving with talent.

Do I think Ryan T will be improved - yes. Do I think the OL is improved - yes. Heck, getting rid of Long was the best improvement. Do I think the Defense is better - yes. Do I think the WR's are better - yes. Do I think the Offense is better - yes. Do I think the overall talent needs to continue to improve - yes. But all these "yeses" are an indication that we should not be thinking this is the same losing team.

Patrick I love you all and the Dolphins. I just do not realize that many wins. A newly built team and that defensive player Jordon might not even play. The proof is in the pudding so they say, and I hope we do not get eaten alive. Also I do not like the running backs and believe RT needs a good running game. Really liked the pick up of the kicker, Carp will have to work hard to keep his job. Seems Clabo was a good pick up. Have to look up his stats do not know about him. Hey I hope you can tell me I told you so!!!!!!! I would really be the happiest Dolphin fan ever.
I hope Ross does not move our team. I thought we might get some $$$$$ from the state.
4 replies · active 622 weeks ago
What on earth makes you think that """ Jordan might not even play """ ??

THAT'S RIDICULOUS !!

He is a 3 down guy, he will start on opening day, and be on the field 75% of the time for the next four to 10 plus years!!

Everybody in the league has a sore shoulder, and'ya might as well accept now that Carpenter has been replaced !!!

GOFINS!!
JPBelgianPhin's avatar

JPBelgianPhin · 622 weeks ago

Well... saying that Jordan might not even play is an exageration.
But so is saying that he'll be a 3down guy next season and play 75% of the snaps!
One would think, the 3rd pick in the draft should be on the field? It's like they started making excuses for the guy from the get go, "he just had surgery... His college doesn't graduate till late... Blah, blah, blah." I won't go on a rant or anything but I think the 3rd player selected in any draft should be on the field starting on opening day.
Yes I agree Patrick. When a team selects a player in a position that is the strength of the team, there is a good chance that he will be brought along slowly. That doesn't mean that was a bad move.
Polly Ann Murray's avatar

Polly Ann Murray · 622 weeks ago

I would like to see him on the field. Disregarding the injury they want him to bulk up to be ready to play. I am ready for Carp to be gone not worried about it. Just wondered why we wasted a pick on a kicker(I did like the pick) when they can be bought off the street all summer. Some of a**h**** moves really confuse me. Like Cabo!!!!! hows that Patrick??
1 reply · active 622 weeks ago
Whats the matter with Clabo ?? He played in a zone scheme for Denver and Atlanta until just last year when Atl went to a different blocking scheme in which he also did fine with !! He's very well-rounded, and according to his radio interviews he's extremely intelligent too, I got the impression that he's gonna be a huge asset to the youngsters !!

We didn't draft a Kicker to compete with unreliable DC ( 28 misses in 5 years ), we drafted the best collegiate Kicker to assure ourselves of replacing DC ( who finished o12 on IR ) while also saving 2plus million in cap space !! Carpenter started o12's pre-season with injury issue's from o11 too !!

We didn't have a 6th round pick, and he wouldn't have been there in the 7th or as a UDFA!! IMHO we weren't looking for competition a Kicker, we were assuring ourselves of replacing one that has missed at least 3 game winners in each of the last two years!!

Philly took their o11 kicker ( Alex Henery )in the 4th round, the Rams took o12's Zuerlein in the 6th round ), and the Bill took o13's Hopkins 11 picks after our choice of Sturgis !!

Jus-Talkin wit'cha Polly : ))))))))) , GOFINS!!

I do not watch film ad nauseum. That's why I read this blog and what your writer's have to say. What I do try to do is
not get so emotionally invested that I can't see what the analysts are trying to tell me. I like your blog and your writer's.
Well, most of them anyway. lol I feel like JI, JP, and company have done their level best to improve the quality of the
team. I am concerned that Mr. Ross will become the next Jerry Jones. I also get concerned how anyone thinks the
Dolphins aren't going to kick a few tails this year. Call me delusional, but 10-6 sounds about right to me. There I go
being emotionally invested again. Keep up the good work Paul and company. Go Dolphins ! !

Polly Ann Murray · 622 weeks ago

I should rephrase the last. I mean I like Clabo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 replies · active 622 weeks ago
Polly, I like the Clabo pick up... He's not overpriced, he has no injury history and he's started every game for the last 5 years with two pretty good football teams. I would say we got a lot of value without trading picks to KC for Albert, McKinney has a history of being a party boy and not showing up in shape, Winston has injury issues. So it looks to me that we landed the best candidate for the job and gave up nothing to get him.

We would not have been able to pick up a kicker like Caleb Sturgis if we waited any longer. The kid has a hammer for a leg and like I've said a couple times in these comments, he was the best kickoff kicker in college, 47% of his kicks were touchbacks. Kicking the ball out of the endzone makes sure a lot of bad things don't happen. And he has great range. Don't dismiss the value of a good kicker, they score points and win games. We lost at least 2 games last year by missing field goals.
JPBelgianPhin's avatar

JPBelgianPhin · 622 weeks ago

Sure, a great kicker is a playmaker. If Sturgis is a great kicker (I believe he is) getting a playmaker in the fifth round means great pick.
To me the best pick in our draft.
He sure brought alot of smiles in Gainesville the last four years:)))
Dolphins | Still have plenty of cap space

Tue, 07 May 2013 08:32:38 -0700

The Miami Dolphins will still have $13.7 million in available cap space once their rookie draft class is signed, which they can roll over to next season.

Gonna need that 13.7 next year, seeing that Wallace's cap number jumps to about that much more than he counts for in o13 !!

I know that the numbers will shift due to other expiring contracts etc, etc, just seemed that the Wallace numbers made it simple to digest at this time !!
I trust what the PBP say when it comes to salary's and cap space. The one thing I am not clear on is the amount of money that can be carried forward into next year. I was of the opinion based on what I understand the CBA reads that only 5 million dollars can be brought into next years salary cap space.

In that light the Dolphins would or should use up the difference between that 5 mill and what they have left over. It's silly going into the year with money still on the table. Of course I'm not leaving any room for Ross to pocket any excess money.
''' I understand the CBA reads that only 5 million dollars can be brought into next years salary cap space. '''''

I thought it would be a max 11 % of whatever the total cap space is, seeing that we HAVE to spend 89 % ...

I don't know the exact cap number but saving the suggested 11% toward o14 has to be more than 5 mill, I would think ??

Hey G, did you get my phone message last weekend??
If more needs to be spent then Reshad Jones needs an extension.
TX there is always the franchise tag.
True but that should only be used for a player they really want to keep but can't work out a contract extension or a new contract IMO. Do you know if the team even attempted to work out anything with Jones?
Yes Kenny I have it recorded. I picked up the call but Verizon already transferred you to the voice mail. You could be right about the 11%, and yes it would be more than 5 million. It would be a touch over 12 million if you are correct.
10-6 is how it will be dealt, tannehill 4000+ 20/12 td int ratio lopse to Houston round 2 after beating pats in first round... anyone else?
what if gibsons gets hurt???? no bess? then what, they cut everyone from last yr draft... editor what do you say???!!!!!
Look at our UDFA Chad Bumphis. He'd fill in at slot
http://www.milehighreport.com/2013/2/4/3950712/20...
1 reply · active 622 weeks ago
Bumphis played well at Mississippi State last year and I can't figure out why he wasn't drafted.
Guys, the cap is not exactly a cut and dried 89% per season deal... The cap will be averaged over 4 years and teams must spend 89% of the 4 year total. That is why the cap money can be used in the following season because it is not based on a single year but over 4 years. A team can go over and a team can be under, but must reach the cap floor of 89% of the 4 year total.
5 replies · active 622 weeks ago
Thanks much Patrick:) I have been confused about the cap.
Good-Stufff P, that helps A LOT !!!!!
Doesn't that cap number change to 95% next year ? I was pretty sure the 89% figure was only in place for 2 years. I'm not sure about what is spelled out in the new CBA. What I am sure about is Dawn Aponte and her assistant have done one hell of a job in getting Miami cap space under control. Way to go Dawn !!!
I think DoG is enamoured with Dawn!
It was a mess before. Kudos to the Lady:)))))
Nice article...
