15 Most Important Dolphins for 2013: #7 Brian Hartline

There was plenty of buzz about the Miami Dolphins' changes in the passing game as the Dolphins look to have a much better aerial attack than they did a year ago. At wide receiver, Miami added deep threat Mike Wallace and dependable Brandon Gibson. Davone Bess is no longer a part of the receiving corps and tight end Anthony Fasano is now a Kansas City Chief and will likely be replaced by former New York Jet Dustin Keller. Perhaps lost in all the mix however, is Miami's leading receiver from 2012 and the team's single-game receiving record holder, Brian Hartline.

Hartline led the Dolphins in 2012 with 1,083 yards receiving on 74 receptions while scoring one touchdown. That lone touchdown came in Week 4 in Arizona on an 80-yard bomb from Ryan Tannehill in a game where Hartline tallied a franchise-record 253 yards receiving.

Hartline not only led Miami in receiving in 2012, he had more receiving yards last season than anyone on the current roster, including Wallace. Hartline also averaged 14.6 yards-per-catch last season which was tops on the team for all players with more than six receptions. Hartline even recorded a higher percentage of first downs than Bess, a player known for being a good third down receiver.

Hartline has a good rapport with second-year quarterback Tannehill and with the exception of Tannehill, no one will benefit more from the acquisition of Wallace than Hartline. With few deep threats on the outside last season, Hartline was the focus of most opponents' defensive schemes against the pass. With Wallace now on the roster, the focus will be taken away from Hartline which should allow him to excel for a second straight season.

Hartline has also proven to be dependable, both with his health and with his hands. Hartline has missed just four games in four NFL seasons and has played in all 16 of Miami's games in each of the last two seasons. Hartline has great hands, having made a number of excellent catches in his career and once he gets the ball, he usually does a good job of tucking it away. Hartline fumbled just once last season and with 183 career receptions, has done so just twice in his career.

With the additions of Wallace and Gibson, the Miami Dolphins should certainly be a better passing team in 2013, but as important as the new additions will be one of the more reliable players from a season ago, Brian Hartline. With much of the pressure taken off Hartline with the addition of Wallace, the Dolphins should have one of the better 1-2 punches at receiver in the AFC. It's also not beyond the realm of possibility that with more weapons and a more experienced Tannehill, that Hartline could actually have a more productive year for the Dolphins in 2013.

Hopefully with the attention deverted to Wallace, Hartline will find the endzone a little more often. The only thing keeping Hartline from being thought of as a great receiver in this league is TDs.
Hartline has the makings to be that all round type of receiver.

Hopefully, no defense will be able to cheat up against the run!
The receivers should be fun to watch this season. Hartline will have a good year and Wallace will help the team as a whole. I expect the DBs to be off the receivers more this year with the added talents and threat of breaking more for long gains.

Another nice thing about Hartline that may be forgotten by a lot of people is that he is always at the top of the league standings for WR's in the Pass Interference drawn category. Not only does he move the chains with his catches he also does it with penalties drawn. I look for Hartline to have another 1000++ yard season, this time adding multiple TD's.
As mentioned above the only knock on Hartline is his TD production. I don't know how things will work out this year. I can say this. Teams will not be able to sit on the only true threat the dolphins had last year at WR. Wallace will get everyones attention even if he drops every pass that comes his way.

Where's Kenny? I haven't seen a comment from him in a few days. I know this is a tough time of year though, not much happening with the team to talk about, and people doing vacations and all that stuff. I know this is one of the busiest times of year for me at my office, so maybe he's just busy.

A few weeks ago I sent him an email and had a failure notice from his site, so he could be having puter problems. Your right this is always a slow time of year. It's about to pick up big time in a few days. I was trying to get to a practice this year, but once again I'm not sure if I can make one. They start at 8:30 so I need to leave here at least by 6:30. That's not really the problem though, it's been the rain. Practice is held outdoors and it has been raining more than I can ever remember on the east coast in a very long time.

Nice write up on Hartline, Mike. You included some points that I didn't know about his durability. And he was real shaky during the 2012 off season and still came through with his best season as a Dolphin, production-wise.

I'd say Miami got well in the receiving department with the 2013 FA and Draft. We are going to be an explosive, unpredictable team to defend against this year.

If Tannehill doesn't make that major jump in his second year he is expected to make, it won't be because we didn't get a good supporting cast around him.

I was reading a post on Bleacher Report the other day that showed how Ryan excelled throwing the ball deep and in the area of the field that Wallace made his best yardage on Pittsburgh's team. The article goes on to say that Tannehill and Wallace will not have any problem jelling and becoming productive together.

But let's not forget that Hartline has the best chemistry with our young QB and was also a track star in college. He is not quite as fast as a Wallace, but with less coverage being swung his way, he is going to get open more often down field., than not.. Look for him to have another good year with Wallace in the mix. Especially if our running game is better than average, as well.

Hartline was 2nd to Chris Johnson of the Titans in the East Coast National sprint finals of high school track meet in his senior year. The guy can run. It's just that no one seems to know it.

I said that several times last year, the dude can run. I don't have it in front of me, and don't have the time to look it up, but if memory serves me correct, I think he has a 40 best of 4.46 but an average of 4.52, that may not be 100% correct but its close without looking it up. Wallace isn't the only guy we have that can stretch the field, Harline did it several times last year, him only having 1 TD wasn't entirely his fault, RT wasn't exactly spot on in his rookie year when it came to long passes that needed a little touch.

Oh I think they knew he could run, Riverdog. They double covered him all of last season which is probably why he only got 1 TD on the year. They won't be able to cover him so well this year with some of our other receivers.

Thanks for mentioning his track meet results, though. I didn't know he was second to C. Johnson. That is some fast company, for sure.

I think we missed one here, I've seen a little bit of tape on this guy, he's huge with pretty good feet and technique, needs polished for sure, but wasn't going to be overly expensive.
The Overpay Wallace need to come and show that he is the real deal, until that happen the best WR. Miami has is Ryan Hartline, also very important the OL. if no improvement then the running play (Miller Time) will go to the trash on defense my concern also is this two Overpay FA. LB. if they are not playing in accordance with their salary the season will be very long the real test for this team is going to be the first five games good luck DOLPHIN'S.

There are winnable games in those first 5 games even with last years team. Yes a few of the early games are against good teams. No one knows if those teams will be as good as they were last year, and no one knows what the Dolphins will be like.

I don't see why people are writing off the first 5 games as loses when this team hasn't even touched the field. Every team in the NFL has " IF's " on their team. There is no doubt that many Dolphins have been conditioned to losing, so much so that we don't even give our own team a chance to do anything but lose.

This is a general statement Leen and it isn't directed to you or anyone else in particular. To many Miami Dolphin fans act like " Eyore " the donkey of Winnie the Pooh. He walks around all day wallowing in his sorrows ( saying poor me, I lost my tail. What am I going to do ) It's time we got out of that rut, and at least try to give the team a chance.
We will not lose all of the first five games. This team has more heart than that. I agree with you Dog. I believe we can win three of them which will set us up well for Divisional play and the run at the end of the season.
3 more freaking days till training camp starts! I can't wait... We've been down too long, it's time for the rebirth of the Fins!
