Miami Defensive Backs Poised for a Great Season

It took three preseason games, but the Miami Dolphins finally showed some life and gave fans a preview of what could be a special 2018 season. There are still holes in this team, but the good is starting to displace the bad. In a world full of negativity, it's time for the Dolphins to lean on their strengths and cover up the ugly. The offense will come later as the focus falls squarely on the Miami defense.

The team is prepping for some serious leaning on what may become a spectacular unit, the defensive backfield. Only last season, media and fans alike berated the defensive back's obvious ineptitude. All of that has changed with the drafting of Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitz is one of the most unique players ever to don a Miami Dolphin uniform.

While metaphors spring from the keyboard with relative ease when writing about Fitzpartick, it's best to explain him in Dolphin terms. Minkah has the instincts and study habits of Zach Thomas, the body of Reshad Jones and the coverage ability of Sam Madison. Fitzpatrick may go down as one of the best draft picks in Miami Dolphin history.

Since the retirement of Zach Thomas, a continuous gaping hole has resided in the middle of the Dolphins defense. Zach had the ability to sniff out the offense's intention and place himself in the right place at the right time. By combining great instincts with insatiable study habits, Zach knew the play, many times before the snap. Placing Minkah Fitzpatrick in that hallowed stratosphere is very high praise indeed.

Since Thomas retired, offenses have morphed into a high tempo, run pass option (RPO) style that Miami has never adjusted to, until now. Safeties Reshad Jones and TJ MacDonald are both excellent players, Jones is pro bowl caliber and MacDonald can add a legitimate eighth body to the box.

Xavien Howard and Bobby McCain are both very good corners. Howard is rounding into form as the best cover guy on the Miami Dolphins, and he is not afraid to stick his nose in on run support. McCain is a small feisty corner in the vein of a young Brent Grimes, who can make plays in spite of his diminutive stature.

This represents the best defensive backfield the Miami Dolphins have presented to opposing offenses in many years. It will become the backbone of this team in an interesting philosophical shift from big money defensive tackles to a well-paid complete defensive backfield unit.

For all of his greatness, Ndamukong Suh could not stop dinky passes throw right behind him. He carried three players into the path of least resistance, while the ball was going the other direction. From the vantage point behind the line of scrimmage, savvy play makers like the Miami DBs can root out these plays without getting caught in the wash.

Moving from the spectacular to the good, Miami's defensive line is going to benefit greatly from the improvement in the DBs behind them. The term "coverage sack" will take on a whole new meaning. Cam Wake and Robert Quinn present two very accomplished and polished pass rushers with some interesting options to spell them. Those near misses by Wake we have come to lament over the years will turn into game changing sacks when coverage adds an extra second to the pass rush.

The defensive tackles will be okay and really, they don't need to be much better. As briefly mention earlier, the philosophy of having a monster in the middle of the defense proved a flawed tenant. It's foolish to dismiss the greatness of Ndamukong Suh, but clearly his impact was not worth the huge chunk of the salary cap he represented. The entire starting defensive backfield is cheaper than Suh...

Akeem Spence, Jordan Phillips, Devon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor are a hardy bunch of O-line eaters that can rotate continuously. None of them is in the Suh category, but they don't need to be, they only need to be good for the players beside and behind them to thrive. If the defensive tackles can hold their own, the entire defense will shine around them. It's a dirty job, but the pay is good.

Bringing us once again to the weak-link of the Miami Dolphin defense, the linebackers. To this point, the only linebacker with any historical data is the notoriously inconsistent Kiko Alonso. The tale of Raekwon McMillan's lost rookie season is not worth rehashing, leaving the question of whether he can actually play in the NFL. The pre-season has not been an indicator of greatness. Jerome Baker is a rookie 3rd round pick who has shown signs of being a decent draft pick, but again there is no historical data.

The linebacker corps is very thin behind these players with only Chase Allen playing to NFL standards. Here lies the Miami Dolphin defense's wild card, will the LBs round into form sooner rather than later? Will they round into form at all? The center of the defense has looked soft in the preseason with yards coming in huge chunks. Two runs have already eclipsed 60 yards. As Adam Gase is fond of saying, "we need to clean this up,” or another agonizing season awaits the Miami linebackers.

Health will play a big role in Miami's resurgence as a dominant defense. The depth in all units behind the defensive line is thin at best. The Dolphins have a chance to be great, if the rookie linebackers (McMillan is a rookie) round into form, the defensive backs gel as a unit and those two gifted pass rushers can defy age by having monster seasons.

From this point of view, losing Suh will have a greater positive impact than many suspect. The philosophical switch from inside-out to outside-in, will begin paying dividends in the name of Minkah Fitzpatrick.

As an outlying thought, if the Miami Dolphins played the NFL draft with the intention of making sure Fitzpatrick fell to them, it was magnificent!

good informative article----I'm very curious about the defense with the addition of Quinn, Fitzpatrick,McDonnell and second year yr McMillain. Everyone I talked with says they are probably adding 15-20 plays defensively that is only practiced in the bubble. The players have a ton of versatility to play multiple positions. Tennessee is a physical team that doesn't help the team for opening day but after that we are good with the defense. Who knows game planning and offense getting early lead could help us in opener.
NP Patrick, GREAT STUFF!!!

From my June 3 Starting Roster Projection

I BELIEVE that The Swiss Army Knife, Jack & Master of All Football Trades, and true leader Minkah Fitzpatrick will be farrr more valuable than the one dimensional Suh as the Future Franchise Face of the Defense!!

And we’ll have him for 5 years for the cost of one year with what we were scheduled to pay Suh!!!

Loved Suh (zero disrepect intended), but Minkah Fitzpatrick (from Anywhere and Everywhere) will be farrr more impactful and indecipherable !!

The Miami Dolphins 2018 Defense could very well become the class of the AFC East!

The revolution is coming and its names are Kenyan Drake, Albert Wilson and Minkah Fitzpatrick. While the Patriots will win the East with a fine 11-5 record, Miami will sweep the Pats, building upon last December’s Monday night beatdown, and surprise the league by stealing the second wild-card spot from the media darlings in Houston. “”””

I like this writer kv, sees the Dolphins as legitimate improvements. I don't agree the Pats are division winners again, after reading this fantastic blog by Patrick - I see some big shakeups in the division. And have ya heard, jets finally got a QB that is full of talent....lol

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase spent a lot of time answering questions on Monday, giving a breakdown of exactly where he sees the team heading into their last preseason game. It was a deep look into how Gase sees the 2018 version of the Dolphins, and how he is viewing some of the answers to the biggest questions fans have about the team.
There was a lot to come out of yesterday’s press conference, so this morning, we will break it down by topic>

Nice job Patrick - Everyone seems to be down on our LB's, and honestly, I'm not. I think once games start in earnest, these LB's, and the game plans will put them in a position to succeed. Raekwon is NOT slow like everyone says, that's way overblown. I think baker is what NFL's are these days, smaller and faster. When the Jets drafted Darron Lee, I recall saying he will get engulfed or washed out on every play, but the truth is, they had it right. This is what an NFL LB is, especially since for the most part they're playing pattycake out there, and aren't allowed to really tackle anyone anymore. McMillan will be a solid signal caller for the D, have them lined up properly, and Baker will be a huge improvement at SLB. What worries me is the CB's, if Lippett can't work his way back to 2016 form. My hope was we'd see Minkah at deep safety, but if Lippett forces McCain to play boundary CB, Minkah will be exclusively inside, which is fine, but I'd rather see him play CF and make plays.

In other words, I don't think the defense will be nearly as bad as some expect. The pass rush could be a huge surprise, as most prognosticators are overlooking Quinn, Wake, Harris, Branch, maybe Malveaux too, along with Phillips and Godchaux from the inside.

I really like the Drake/Gore backfield. Gore is so tough inside (still), and Drake is a HR hitter that make it happen on any play, whether as a runner or receiver. Ballage will be in the mix too, once he gets out of concussion protocol, which will be in time for the season. Guarantee you that Gesicki will be much more involved in the regular season, they're just lulling everyone to sleep on him. This the guy at TE that Gase has been dreaming of, he so desperately brought Julius Thomas who was a shell of what he used to be to fill that role. Gase wants the flex TE so bad, he can taste it. Just watch Gesicki get his chances, and if he starts making plays, they will keep at it, and then other guys will benefit, like Amendola, Stills, Wilson, Drake etc. Getting pumped yet? :)
Patrick - Also love your commentary on Minkah - He's definitely a difference maker, something we need more of. Reshad is one, T.J. may also be one, but Minkah is that guy you count on to keep plugging away. The more playmakers the better!

Drinking the Koolaid much, Patrick? Such optimism.

Already, several rookies are starting to stand out and make an impact on both sides of the ball.

The fact that Gase is playing a bland, vanilla offense means he does have some tricks and schemes ready to install that will better suit the explosive players he has on offense. It should reap havoc and give defenses all they can handle. Especially with running backs, receivers and now, tight ends that can take it to the house.

I only hope i will have internet access to see some of the games this season. I'm hoping this will be a pivotal season for the Dolphins.

Positivity Tony! There's too much negative in this world, let's all take a deep breath and think positive!

I agree 100%, Gase is hiding everything! Especially a guy named Gesicki! I was going to do an offensive write-up next, but I'll wait for what Kenny has brewing...

Nice article as usual Patrick. All your writing get's A plus. I wish I felt that good about the team. RT stunk up the field thru preseason hope he does better in real time play. As usual I will wait for a game to voice my opinions. Here hoping all the positive you are seeing happen when they really are needed. GO FINS

Polly, Polly, Polly... Good to hear from you. Like I told Tony, It's time to go positive girl, we need fans that are in it and it's starts in places like this humble blog. Tannehill has looked really good in my opinion and you know I was never enamored with him in the past. He has matured and he knows the offense really well, I think we're going to see a better tempo this season. The offense Gase runs is based on tempo, he likes to get teams in mismatches and then stick them there by upping the tempo and not allowing subs...

It will be a good season this year if we stay healthy.
In with team I just need a real time game. RT looked good to you well ok. I will be impressed if we win or play a good first game. I know preseason means very little except for newbees wanting to make a team.
Good work Patrick. I never put too much stock in preseason unless an injury occurs. I am very optimistic about the season.

was watching cbs4 nightly show last night and Jim Berry mentioned the defensive possibilties with all the versatile players being able to play multiple positions. The DE's and OLB are almost identical in size, quinn played OLB as did Wake,DL dropping into coverage was used last year. Secondary is loaded with interchangable players who can play multliple positions. He mentioned the Pats always shutting down the oppts biggest offensive player and forcing teams to find another weapon to beat them.He said we now have the players to do this week in and week out.
Yes, McMillian is everything mentally and physically. All the former dolphin players can't say enough good things about this kid. A year learning the defense from the sidelines helped him and probably helped Tanny also.

I've been watching... Mac, is gonna need his recognition to be a step faster if he's going to make up for his average speed. I like him, but the NFL is what it is... Fast.
Not buying the notion that the Dolphins will be bottom feeders this season. Hoping the Dolphins are scaring the NFL on Halloween!

Was researching Raiders and Mack and who had the draft capital to pull the trigger on a trade. Story goes, two firsts and a Mack truck full of cash, not gonna happen, right?

Anyway, noticed the Dolphins traded Landry for a 2018 4th, TE Smythe, and a 2019 7th, conditionally sent to Detroit for DT Spence. The Ajayi trade netted the Dolphins RB Ballage in the 4th.The Dolphins traded two pains in the a-- for three players with upside. Not bad!

anyone noticed who was giving the pre-kickoff huddle speech before game and he wasn't even going to play? The guy hasn't even played a official NFL game yet. Is it possible he may be a team captain? If so, he would be first in team history to be named captain without ever playing a official nfl game.
Outstanding Patrick!!! Great defenses will championships and we have the makings of one. Sure, the LBs need some help but the other eight players on the field will help them out. The D will carry the team until the O gels as a unit. But when they gel, look out Patsies for we are coming for you!!!!

Hull will be back in 8 games then who gets cut? Lippett must have really stumbled and was still hurting from last season. Kind of speaks well of Fitz and others. Malveaux & Asiati are PS eligible
I agree on Malveaux. He's a beast and very tough. Asiati does need to hone his skills. He has the size and hopefully the drive. No doubt the new schemes and Fitz's arrival changed the landscape for the DBs.
seems like they have program to train low draft picks through Practice squad and low level depth players who might see action in specialized plays. So much better than getting high priced FA's.
