The Miami Dolphins Leap into the Future

Miami Dolphin fans watch the ugly business of shedding contracts hoping it ends in a sustainable winning team. The Dolphins have dominated free agent signing many times in a twenty stretch of mediocrity without fielding a playoff caliber roster. Finally recognizing that building teams through free agency is not a winning formula in the NFL, Miami embarks on an interesting journey through the minefields of the NFL draft.

"Building through the draft," has a wonderful sound to it, but selecting which human is best prepared for the rigors of NFL football, is an inexact science at the very least, a guessing game at best. Agents have become teachers, processing players through a myriad of classes designed to provide answers to questions in preparation to present the perfect football player. How can a person be courteous and kind, yet mean as rabid pit-bull.

It's an interesting dichotomy...

Meeting face-to-face with prospects about to become the team's future is essential when failure is fatal. Attempts to trip up scripted responses have led to interesting questions. Jeff Ireland's callus inquiries about Dez Bryant's mother, or whether a player prefers men, or how many cars did he steal, have made headlines for all the wrong reasons. In reality, these meetings have little bearing on whether a prospect will make a great professional. During the pageantry, they are actors auditioning, not players playing.

Miami Dolphin fans can relate to Dion Jordan as a great example of all that can go wrong. When it seems too good to be true, it probably is. The Dolphins were picking 12th in 2013 and the Raiders were willing to accept Miami's 12th and 42nd pick to give Miami the 3rd overall pick. One look at these names is all you need to know the Dolphins should have traded down, instead of trading up.

1 Eric Fisher OT
2 Luke Joeckel OT
3 Dion Jordan DE
4 Lane Johnson OT
5 Ezekiel Ansah DE
6 Barkevious Mingo OLB
7 Jonathan Cooper OG
8 avon Austin WR
9 Dee Milliner CB
10 Chance Warmack OG
11 D.J. Fluker OT
12 D.J. Hayden CB
13 Sheldon Richardson DE
14 Star Lotulelei DT
15 Kenny Vaccaro SS
16 EJ Manuel QB
17 Jarvis Jones OLB
18 Eric Reid FS
19 Justin Pugh OT
20 Kyle Long OG
21 Tyler Eifert TE
22 Desmond Trufant CB
23 Sharrif Floyd DT
24 Bjoern Werner OLB
25 Xavier Rhodes CB
26 Datone Jones DE
27 DeAndre Hopkins WR
28 Sylvester Williams DT
29 Cordarrelle Patterson WR
30 Alec Ogletree OLB
31 Travis Frederick C
32 Matt Elam FS

The Dolphins committed the Cardinal Sin of selecting a player based on his measurements and combine numbers. They overlooked the player's obvious troubles, exacerbated by bringing that player within reach of South Beach. Jordan cost Miami picks 12 and 42. Imagine if they had traded down for a couple of 2nds, here are few names selected later in 2013.

35 Zach Ertz TE
37 Giovani Bernard RB
46 Kiko Alonso MLB
48 Le'Veon Bell RB
57 D.J. Swearinger SS
61 Eddie Lacy RB
63 Travis Kelce TE
69 Tyrann Mathieu FS
71 T.J. McDonald SS
76 Keenan Allen WR
85 Jordan Reed TE

Miami actually ended up paying two of these players premium free agent contracts. The problem in today's selection process is placing too much weight on profile numbers and not enough on what's on film. Jeff Ireland's glaring example with Dion Jordan should serve as the poster child for every want-to-be general manager.

It is obvious, Ireland was unprepared for the 3rd pick in that draft. Looking at the first round players, Oakland knew every player in the 3rd slot could be had with the 12th or indeed, the 42nd pick. There were some good offensive linemen at the top of that draft, but Ireland was under pressure to make something happen. He had submarined his coach in a power play, leaving his owner hanging out to dry. Ireland needed to take a chance. In the end, it cost him his job and very nearly his career.

Oakland ended up with D.J. Hayden and Menelik Watson. Watson never turned into much, but Hayden has been a starter in the league since that draft. What rings true is, there are very few can't miss prospects. The only position worth taking risks on is the quarterback. The irony is, there was only one QB taken in the 1st round of that draft, EJ Manuel. In fact, there was only one QB taken in the second round, Geno Smith. Not one true starting QB came from the 2013 draft.

If the only reason to trade up is for a QB, Jeff Ireland did it in the poorest NFL QB draft class in the last twenty years. Ireland believing Ryan Tannehill was a franchise quarterback in 2012, created a disaster from which, the Miami Dolphins have yet to recover.

The reason for this comparison is only two possible franchise QBs are available in this draft, Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray. Neither of these QBs is an absolute sure thing which means, the teams at the top of this draft will be looking to opt-out.

Miami must not, for any reason become a player in these reindeer games. The second and third rounds of this draft overflow with talent and this is the prefect year to forget the splash and trade down.

Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater have both opted for contracts as backup quarterbacks rather than join the Miami Dolphins as a one-year starter.

The term "placeholder quarterback" has become vogue when discussing the position in Miami. Miami is looking to stock draft picks in the coming years and the most painful way to do that is by losing starters through free agency and not replacing them. This creates opportunities for compensatory draft picks the following year.

If Taylor or Bridgewater was a starting free agent QB in Miami (and indeed, they would) then it would displace the loss of Wake or James. Those two players will start on other teams and by not replacing them, Miami earns compensatory draft picks.

Bridgewater or his agent may have an over inflated idea of his value, but if a QB is coming to a team as the starter, than he should be paid as a starter. Why get killed and not get paid? Miami is not willing to pay a placeholder quarterback and hence, they have no incentive to come to Miami.

The press will malign the Dolphins as a place no quarterback is willing to play. The truth is, this is the pain Miami must endure to erase the errors reaching all the way back to Jeff Ireland.

It's interesting how none of this is ever tied to a man named Bill Parcells, but it was Parcells who began the downhill run. Parcells hired Ireland and Sparano (RIP) without understanding, once Jeff Ireland smelled the scent of power, the strength would overwhelm him.

The Dolphins swapped their 6th round pick for a 7th round pick in the 2019 draft and obtained a 4th round pick in the 2020 draft in trade for QB Ryan Tannehill.

The Dolphins understand, 2019 is not going to be a pretty season so why add players now. It means a QB position manned with marginal talent that will not impair the ability to obtain compensatory draft picks. It also assures the team will not be very good.

It's going to be a tough ride for Miami fans... Rigorously adhering to a plan is painful but there is some relief. In the past, Miami was under the illusion of being constantly one player away from a playoff team. They did not seem to understand the difference between a minor playoff team and a Super Bowl caliber team. The new regime clearly understands this difference and it starts at quarterback.

The quest to find a great quarterback in the draft, begins now...

Buckle your seatbelts, it's going to be an interesting ride Miami Dolphin fans!

A lot to talk about... Sorry, got a little run-on there! Enjoy!
And yes it will be a wild ride Pat:))) We need those depth building draft picks to create the foundation we've lacked for some time. Picking at 13 may be great but I believe Lock, Haskins and Murray will be gone. That leaves Jones and Grier as the best remaining bets and they are getting second round grades, at best, from the experts. But, enter a new thought process. We have a new coaching staff, somewhat steeped in the NE tradition of player evaluation. That also includes our newly promoted GM and newly hired Personnel Managers. Those folks have been out in the pits with potential draftees and forming their own opinions. The Combine was okay but not the end all be all for positioning players on a draft board. I would expect a better draft as a result. Even though we need a franchise QB, I don't think that happens this year unless there is a later round miracle. Or, do we mortgage the farm and move up to the 4th or 5th pick in the first round? Thoughts?
Tom, did you ever hear of Lock before the combine? I guess I did a little, but as a second day prospect. Now he's going to get picked before 13??? I'm not seeing Miami picking a first round QB in this draft.

KV has his finger on the pulse much better than I do, but I just do see it...

GREATSTUFF P!!!

CB was a top need for us in the DJ draft Year,
and I figured that had we stayed where we were that DJ Hayden would likely be there for us,

But Yea as I've always suggested Ireland was sabotaging Sporano to better his own job security..

Suggested from the GET-GO that Parcels was a NY guy heart, mind and soul,
and that he'd sabotage the Miami organization from within..

Totally believe all that, BP collected for hangin on the golf course, leaving the work to his flunkies...
Though the one move that BP admitted to being his choice was Pat White !!!

SABOTUERS WERE BP & IRELAND!!!!

GOFINS!!!

LOCK falls to 13, GOTA NAB HIM!!!

Just in case o20/21 drafts don't fall right!!!

Not willing to twiddle my fingers for however long
hoping that o20/21 drafts fall our way!!!

LOCK falling to 13 would equate to o19 first round falling out way as far as QB goes!!!

Then if o20 or 21 dies indeed land us Da'Chit at QB,
someone/QB becomes lucrative trade bait!!!

That is a lot of writing Pat. Good as usual. I am getting lost in this QB search. I was hoping to get Haskins. I read some rumors abut QB CK hope this is not true. i would have to give up being a Fin fan.
They would not put him on our field would they Kenny?
I hope this posts. I posted several on the KM post that did not.

Signing Fitzpatrick is a great idea and continues to stay the course. Smart move.

Agreed Tator... It shuts all the critics up (if that's possible) and now Miami doesn't have worry about all the noise. I'm still thinking they're not after one of these QBs KV... I'm usually wrong, but I would let Lock go to another team and rack up draft picks. Trade down in this draft is what I'm seeing.

Fitzmagic is great pick up if you're looking to groom a young QB, he's a really smart dude and he learns these offenses very quickly. Harvard... Harvard...

Yeah, in two years.
But a safe and decent journeyman is Ryan Fitzpatrick, The club on Sunday agreed to terms on a two-year deal bringing him back to the AFC East to play on his third team in the division.
Last season Fitzpatrick threw for 2366 yards with 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He started the season leading the Bucs to wins over the Saints and Eagles, and was the talk of the league throwing for eight scores in the first two weeks.A couple of other starts had over 400 yds.each.

Our new regime is going for a REBUILD gentlemen. A strong Foundation starts with the O line and D line. No free agent splashes this time around. Maybe pickup some decent drafts and then the later slice down to team numbers that will have hundreds of those let go to pick some more ''bricks in the wall''

Fitzpatrick wad shredding the league statistically the first half of last year,

Then they tried to look back to the future with Winston,

and when Fitz got back in, the seasons first half shredding rhyhm was gone!!

He's Firey, and that beard is intimidating, He can probably win as many games as THill would have come o19 with what/whoever we put on the field...

Fitz is a good pick up. I think he will be the solid experienced player we need this year. I do not see tanking in Fitz,s makeup. We will see where we will go. On to the draft now. I still am hoping for a QB.

Nice write Patrick! You could look at the Bridgewater non-signing two ways. I think if Bridgewater could put health concerns aside, he'd be in MIA with a chance start right now. Good QB's can still play good football and increase their value substantially. On the other hand, an injury could derail his career completely, so he chose the safer path.

It's so refreshing that we're sticking to an edict, really following through in every way. I was tired of all the half-assed rebuilds which were never really rebuilds but different regimes just bringing in truckloads of "their guys" without a care to the salary cap or the future of the team. Spend too much in FA and make a splash but fizzle out anyway. Now we really tore it down, and I think we'll continue to do that until we strip it as far as we can and still fill the roster.

Aren't you guys looking forward to watching the Dolphins use more than a 10 yard radius of the field in the passing game? Fitzpatrick LOVES to sling the rock, and he will be throwing the ball all over the field. It will be refreshing to see that rather than the 25 screens and 5-10 yard passes. Sure, he may get intercepted 20 times, but at least it will be fun to watch. :)

Patrick -- love the historical sweep on all that. Like a trip down a road called memory lane you hoped you'd never go down again. One point in there is you say " Oakland knew every player in the 3rd slot could be had with the 12th or indeed, the 42nd pick." Have been noting for years how far the Jordan deal was below the Jimmy Johnson trade chart -- but might have been just cause of that. Which now makes the memory of it even worse..... but facts first.

I have no problem with the Fitz signing as long as we aren't using him as a reason to forget a QB in this draft. I still believe we should go get Haskins and not take our chances that the QB of choice in next years draft ends up in our laps. In typical Dolphins fashion we will win just enough games not to be able to draft high enough to get one of the studs. Rumor has it, NYG are going D with that #6 pick(smoke screen). I'm guessing, but who knows...

Nice write up Mike E, I'm sure the folks around here can tell you I was never a Tannehill fan, even on day one. But thank goodness that water is under the bridge. I was hopeful a few times that he would turn into something more than a coach killer, but in the end, my instincts were right.

Omar hates Haskins, a lot.... which I find very funny.... yesterday he compared him to Byron Leftwich and got ate up by his followers... one guy even brought up that when he suggested Mayfield last year, Omar said he would be available on day 2 of the draft, and possibly even day 3.... He replied back to some comments, but obviously not that one....Haskins Pro day yesterday went very well, everything was scripted so it didn't get too wild, but a friend of mine who lives in Columbus said there were a lot of oh baby's and a lot of wow's on some of his deeper throws. Not that it matters, just sayin....

NO... NO... NO... I said way back, months ago that Haskins is not an NFL franchise QB and you fuckers never listen!

I was just hoping he would be gone, but guess what... If Haskins is there at number 13 than a bunch of people who do this for a living, just passed on him! NO... NO... for once just listen and quit your freaking man love!

Haskins is not elite.

That was a period at the end of that sentence.

None of these QBs in this draft are elite. NONE.

Murray could be good, but will never sustain an NFL career, his game and his body are unsustainable in the NFL. Haskins is a system QB with very little instincts. Remember the problem with Tannehill? No spatial awareness, Haskins has none. That's another period at the end of the sentence.

I like Jake Fromm a lot... Just saying... Find a way...

I don't care for Omar and I have not watched a single highlight... What I'm telling you is coming from the Ohio State games I have watched.

I do not think Haskins is elite.

I do not think he has the intangible instincts of a great NFL QB... I do not think he is aware of things he doesn't see. We know what this looks like when a QB has to see before he reacts.

I am certainly not the smartest person, I just don't think Haskins is elite. I don't see it...
And Buck, these opposite opinions are why the blog works... No worries bro! I love a good debate!

There is something about Haskins I like, but if they don’t get him or another QB, there are some nice players available, and already stockpiling picks next year. Nice to have options for once. """""DREW LOCK: Mizzou QB deserves mention with Murray, Haskins

The 2019 NFL Draft's quarterback class has been derided as being not as talented as last year's group, but I believe there are three potential franchise quarterbacks in the bunch. A number of observers will cite Oklahoma's Kyler Murray and Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins as Tier 1 prospects, but I believe Missouri's Drew Lock also deserves a seat at the VIP table.

Having earned All-SEC honors in each of the past two seasons (first-team in 2017, second-team in 2018), Lock is a five-star prospect with the arm talent and athleticism to thrive in the league as a new-school quarterback. Lock can make every throw in the book with A-level zip, velocity and touch. He is one of the few passers in this class capable of making rope throws to the opposite hash, while also showing enough arm strength and finesse to launch teardrops down the boundary on vertical routes. With Lock also flashing the ability to make tight-window throws between the numbers, he's a prime candidate to operate in a wide-open NFL playbook under an aggressive offensive coordinator looking to attack every area of the field with an assortment of dropback passes.

The 22-year-old's athleticism and movement skills also stand out on tape. The former high school basketball star displays outstanding balance, body control and short-area quickness inside of the pocket. He makes subtle movements to elude and avoid rushers in the pocket, while delivering off-platform throws on the move in either direction. In addition, he makes those Houdini-like passes look routine.

That said, Lock has struggled with his accuracy, as evidenced by his 56.9 percent completion rate over his four years as Missouri's starter. He frequently misfired on intermediate throws in college, and those off-target throws will result in interceptions at the next level. To be fair, Lock played in a basketball-like offense that revolved around "layups and threes" (screens and deep shots). He needs to become more effective as a distributor by adding more of a mid-range game to his arsenal.

With all that in mind, I can envision Lock flourishing in a Kyle Shanahan-like system that features a number of play-action and bootleg concepts with maximum protection or a moving pocket. Considering the simple two- and three-man concepts that accompany those plays, Lock would be able to show off his dazzling arm talent in a scheme that also slowly indoctrinates him into the pro game. Despite his wealth of experience as a starter in the SEC (46 career starts), Lock is still a relative newbie at the position, based on his multi-sport background in high school. As a prep, Lock spent his offseasons showcasing his hoop skills on the AAU circuit, as opposed to attending various quarterback camps and mastering the footwork and fundamentals of the position with a private trainer. Thus, there is plenty of developmental potential with Lock when he is able to commit to being a franchise quarterback 24/7/365.

From a critical standpoint, there are some legitimate concerns about Lock's performance vs. top SEC competition. Against ranked conference opponents, he posted a 1-10 record with a 52.1 percent completion rate, averaging 203.6 passing yards per game with a 14:16 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Those numbers are startling, particularly for a draft prospect with the potential to come off the board within the first 20 selections."""""
Cont;

"""""""While some of the blame for Lock's record can be attributed to the lack of star power around him on the perimeter, I believe that challenge will actually make him a better pro down the road. Lock developed mental toughness and the necessary leadership skills to fuel a turnaround, as chronicled in this profile by NFL.com's Chase Goodbread. Lock endured a pair of losing seasons during his first two years in Columbia, but led the Tigers to back-to-back bowl games during his final two campaigns.

Lock also handled coaching changes and offensive scheme overhauls during his tenure, which will serve him well when he's forced to adapt and adjust as an NFL QB1.

If I had to compare Lock to a current NFL quarterback, I would point to Matthew Stafford. The former No. 1 overall pick has remarkable arm talent and he's played at an MVP level at times during his career (SEE: 2016) as a comeback specialist (26 career fourth-quarter comebacks, 33 game-winning drives). Interestingly, Stafford entered the league with similar questions about his accuracy, having posting a 57.1 percent completion rate at Georgia. Although he had a strong record against top competition (3-0 in bowl games; 6-3 in rivalry games against Florida, Georgia Tech and Auburn) and a winning overall record (30-9 as a college starter), the combination of arm talent, athleticism and wizardry is similar to the traits Lock displays with the ball in his hands.

If I'm a team looking for a quarterback with a high ceiling based on talent, athleticism and experience, I'm happily hitching my wagon to Lock if I can't get my hands on Murray or Haskins on draft day."""""

Thank you Gronk, thats $50 bucks in my pocket....I won a bet that he would retire. Today was the day. I love the Pats neighbors I have. Miami miracle was another $50 bucks I got from the Patsy fan. LOL and singing ''rollin, rollin, rolling down the river''.....(I don't know why).

After “The Purge”, the Miami Dolphins will be left with a bunch of young players. Some that were existing players on the team, some that will be brought in at a low price via free agency, and some that will be picked up in the NFL Draft in April. But, all of them will be able to create a foundation for which the Dolphins can build from and succeed in the upcoming years. So, instead of the Fins tanking in 2019, they will be fielding a different, younger, and newer looking team than in 2018. Could it be a losing season for the Dolphins, sure. But is losing the plan, absolutely not!

Dan Jones is also a big quarterback at 6-foot-5 1⁄2 inches and 221 pounds and solid athleticism, better put him up there in the mix...I watched his Duke pro day and he is the real deal. Had a lot of arm in long throws and accuracy on all the different setups.
OC Mike Shula was there evaluating as the Giants are looking to have a QB ready to step in when Eli is done.
The next month is the slowest (in my mind) as The Draft is the next big thing to look forward to. And we need to get 2 DT picks right away. But what do I know.

At the Coaches Breakfast on NFL - Adam Gase looked terrible, more unkept than usual, scruffy unkept 6 day old beard and the baseball hat pulled way down, cant see his eyes very well when he speaks. OK guys, I can't give you anymore clues since it would be so obvious. Barry Krauss... He had knee replacement and he walks good now and he's off the pain killers. I used to feel sorry for him with the knees shot and his other crippling injuries. He used to have his wife help him get out of bed. Tough sport where one has to live the remainder of life in pain or crippled.

The song, "When will I see you Again" comes to mind when I read about the trade agreement to send Robert Quinn to Dallas. The details aren't out yet but one thing is very sure, we will see him on Thanksgiving when we play Dallas in their house.
One year Fin QUINN to Cowboys

New Cowboy contract eliminates Quinn 12mill from Fin books (I believe)

Quinn for 6th round pick in 2020. Nice to see the brass still giving players away for tennis balls. Didn't we give up a 4th and a 6th for him in 2018? Team is going to be a blow hard team for another decade for sure.
Mike E, I read the Ross write up and you do have a real pinpoint collection of accurate means and methods. Thank you for your time....Yep, it will be painful but I remember a season recently that we only had 1 win. Nothing will beat that.

I was wondering what you and ocalarob were discussing on the staggered tire back and forth. My Corvette has big azz tires on the rear and much smaller fronts. It came that way. So enlighten me Bro.

They're cutting all the fat from previous regimes F'up's and ridiculous contracts,

Got the 6th back and dumped his 12 mill salary,

Dumping all the BS,

I've been doing some evals and I think Jones is better than Lock. He has better footwork, has really nice anticipation, and really good feel in the pocket. He plays big in big games on a team with little star power. Lock played horrible against good teams. I'm going to stay away from him.

Miami is going to trade out of 13 and maybe even pick up another first next year. They already have 10 picks in 2020. This draft is full of talent in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and I thinking some team will want lock or Jones and give up a couple picks.

Best article so far and to the point, has some inside info too. O line and D line is in their sights for acquiring new players. Fitzmagic is going to be carefully choreographed for the QB things he can do. Should be some great games and maybe some tough losses but Coach and Grier both said there will be some 'pain'. Just so they plan to beat the Jets 2 times.
Draft pickups and future trades and acquires will be fun to see. FINSUP ! https://youtu.be/y0KaksWwYyg

I read an article this morning about Nick Saban crediting Bill Belichick with giving him the best coaching advice when they were together with the Browns. Belichick was a strong proponent of teaching players and practicing them hard at the same time. Saban, at times, did not follow that and continued to over coach during games as well. Belichick believed that you taught players in practice and they executed in the game. Belichick believed in letting them play the game as they were taught in practice. Belichick chewed out Saban numerous times for not following that. Today, practicing that same philosophy, they have 12 championships between them. I fully expect BFlo to follow the same philosophy with us and there will be better attitudes and performance as a result.

Miami Herald, A. Seguro Dolphin head writer since 1990
One of the blessings (and curses) of having seen so many NFL seasons -- and specifically so many Miami Dolphins seasons -- is that stuff becomes familiar.
So when the team announces a potentially brand new way of doing things, as it has in 2019, it can ring hollow rather than excite. Because I’ve seen this approach before.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 is true: There is nothing new under the sun.

It’s all pretty much been tried, folks.

Which brings me to the NFL draft April 25-27. There are draft experts who believe the Dolphins should spend this draft building from the inside out. In fact, general manager Chris Grier is a proponent of this approach.

“Yeah, you build up your offensive line and defensive line,” Grier has said this offseason. “You start there and then you work.”
The thinking is build the offensive line. Build the defensive line. Establish a strong foundation.

And when that is done, add that star quarterback.
This philosophy will give the quarterback a great chance to succeed!
And some of the same people thinking that’s the way it should be done, including Grier and others still working in the Miami Dolphins personnel department today, were working for the Dolphins in April of 2008.

You remember April of 2008, right?
That’s the year the Dolphins picked Jake Long with the first overall selection in the draft.
And left quarterback Matt Ryan to be drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.
The Dolphins were determined to build the foundation that day. They picked the safest and best offensive lineman in the first round and came back by picking Clemson defensive lineman Phillip Merling in the second round.
Foundation!!!!!
Miami left the quarterback for later.
So I ask, how’d the philosophy work out?
Well, let me tell you. The Dolphins left Ryan on the board. And left Joe Flacco on the board. And both those quarterbacks have taken teams to the Super Bowl.
And Jake Long only played in one playoff game for the Dolphins, that in his rookie season, and has been out of the league for years. Merling, meanwhile, was a bust.
So the idea of building the foundation first didn’t pay dividends that day.
It also didn’t work out in 2010 when Miami took two front seven players in the first two rounds -- Jared Odrick and Koa Misi -- and then selected offensive lineman John Jerry in the third round.
Foundation!!!!
(By the way, that 2010 draft had the Dolphins making such boneheaded decisions as selecting A.J. Edds one pick before Geno Atkins; and picking Misi two spots ahead of Rob Gronkowski).
The first pick of the 2011 draft -- center Mike Pouncey -- was made to improve the foundation.
Two of the first three picks in the 2012 draft -- right tackle Jonathan Martin and defensive end Olivier Vernon -- were made to upgrade the foundation.

The first pick of the 2013 draft -- Dion Jordan -- was made to improve the foundation.
The first pick of the 2014 draft -- right tackle Ja’Wuan James -- was made to improve the foundation. As was the signing of Branden Albert in free agency that year.
Two of the first three picks in 2015 -- defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and guard Jamil Douglas -- were made to improve the foundation. As was the signing of Ndamukong Suh in free agency.
The first pick in 2016? Left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Foundation.
The first pick in 2017? Defensive end Charles Harris.
Foundation.
The Dolphins have been building the foundation for over decade. And now Grier says he favors building the foundation first as if this is a new thing.
Well, how about the opposite approach to this?
How about just find the QB? Indeed, how about adding a QB every year until the right one comes along?
I’ve written this should be done for years. It makes sense. I’m a genius!
Well, the Dolphins actually tried that, too.
In 2007, the team signed Trent Green, and traded for Cleo Lemon. And drafted John Beck.
And none worked out.
In 2008, the team signed Josh McCown, and Chad Pennington, and drafted Chad Henne with their third selection of the draft (a second rounder).
And Pennington delivered one year of magic. And then nothing.
The following year the Dolphins added Pat White in the second round. Nope.
In 2011, the Dolphins brought in Matt Moore. And the next year Miami added Ryan Tannehill.
And out of those nine quarterbacks added those five years, the Dolphins had nothing of outstanding lasting value to show for the attempt.
.So my idea has been tried by the Dolphins. And it failed.
You’re hearing that Grier doesn’t expect to spend a lot of money in free agency and that it’s not just a 2019 thing, but rather part of his roster-building philosophy. He has said adding two or three value free agents is better than adding one superstar.
Rick Spielman had the same philosophy. He signed one free agent in 2002 -- defensive tackle Larry Chester.
So Spielman not only kept the spending in free agency low but added to what? The foundation, with a defensive lineman!
Jeff Ireland wasn’t a free spender in free agency until 2013 when he took a swing at the fences with Mike Wallace and Brent Grimes and Dustin Keller and Phillip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe and Brandon Gibson. At least Grimes was good for a time.
Last year, you heard everyone associated with the Dolphins talk about signing and drafting “alpha males” and “players who love the game.”

Sometimes I can agree with some of this journalist opinions and this is one of the better writes. It don't mean nothin' but just another point of view. Some accurate and some wrong. He will be on the bandwagon when he realizes Mr. Boss Ross has done the move to make the team a real contender from the new coaching staff and especially B-flo. Coach Flores is the key here. Down and dirty, work hard at fundamentals and mental mistakes.

And now that T-baum has joined ESPN....WTF. and LOL.

After reading what Salguero wrote, I see a Negative Nancy. He might be a well respected journalist but his constant carping about the team gets annoying to me. He beats the drum for us "tanking" this season. This team may not have a great record in January bit it will not tank. He believes that the new way of doing business is nothing but warmed over failed practices of the past several years. I see that he failed to address one of the biggest reasons for failure and that is coaching. We have some good players but more need coaching to improve their performance between the lines. They need a refresher in fundamentals in order to have that edge over the guy across from them. This coaching regime is all of that, fundamentals, practice having a purpose and a culture of winning. This team is going through a metamorphosis and when all is said and done, we will have many more Ws than Ls. Building from the lines out is pure Parcells and Belichick is one of his disciples. So now, we have Brian Flores, another disciple of that philosophy. Great for us. Sure, we had Parcells but the big difference was that he wasn't putting his foot up a player's backside in that position. BFlo is tough and has proven he will carry that torch. Grier just took over as GM and before, was under Tannenbaum's thumb and thus, was not the puppet master at draft time or any other time. We will be all right but the biggest problem will be impatient sports writers and fans who want instant gratification.

"""""It is now less than two weeks from the draft so as you can imagine it is a busy and intense time for this coaching staff and personnel department. Lists are being finalized. Players are being interviewed. Conclusions are being formed. No, the Dolphins aren’t on the clock just yet, but you can certainly hear it ticking. And it’s getting louder by the day.

Before it gets too loud, before we focus all of our thoughts on that immensely important three days of potential team-altering decisions, a dose of insight seems in order on some of the things that have transpired since we last spoke.

How moving was it, hearing Head Coach Brian Flores disclose last weekend at the Dolphins Cancer Challenge that his mother, Maria, had passed away from cancer about a month before? You just don’t see many coaches open up that way when you know the emotions are still very raw. But the more I listen to Flores, the more I hear his words and observe his actions, the more impressed I have become. He is a sincere, caring and highly motivated man with deep leadership roots, a man who even with limited interaction has already impressed many of the returning players. I get it that it’s very early. I understand that Flores will ultimately be judged by wins and losses. But if first impressions mean something, and they usually do, how can you not be encouraged with what we have already seen?"""""

This may be the most interesting draft in years for us. I can't remember when we have so many options as we do now. Eleven days way from Round One and the publicity is nil from our front office. That is no surprise at all but the mocks really make you wonder what we will take. We need monsters on both lines and at RB, LB and DB, Do we trade down for more picks if a partner is found? That option is not off the board unless the "real deal" is at 13.

Here's a good one I heard today....A 6 year old and a 4 year old are raking the yard.
The 6 year old asks, "You know what? I think it's about time we started learning to cuss."The 4 year old nods his head in approval.
The 6 year old continues,"When we go in for breakfast, I'm gonna say something with hell and you say something with ass."
The 4 year old agrees with enthusiasm.
When the mother walks into the kitchen and asks the 6 year old what he wants for breakfast, he replies, "Aw, hell, Mom, I guess I'll have some Cheerios.
WHACK!
He flies out of his chair, tumbles across the kitchen floor, gets up,and runs upstairs crying his eyes out, with his mother in hot pursuit, slapping his rear with every step.
His mom locks him in his room and shouts, "You can stay there until I let you out!"
She then comes back downstairs, looks at the 4 year old and asks with a stern voice, "And what do YOU want for breakfast, young man?"
"I don't know," he blubbers, "but you can bet your fat ass it won't be Cheerios!"

What do you think of Reshad Jones skipping voluntary practices? BFlo says he is practicing elsewhere but that goes against team unity. Release or trade upcoming?
Looking at the Teams home page and the recent signings of players, I noticed they are signing up in a new ''signing room''. Saturday, Mar 09, 2019 05:12 PM, Dolphins Sign Tight End Dwayne Allen and in the background of the photo I see the same shelf unit that has the same nick nacks that I have, btw, and I then realize after watching other new guys signing and smiling...etc.. that the signing room is Coach Gase's old office. Re-purposed. All the memoirs on those shelves are the same from last year. I have that super bowl mug.

***Rumor from way back in the dark rooms, Dolphins and Jets are talking about the Jets 3rd pick and back trades. Maybe Kenny can have his QB of the future with the 3rd. Raiders are also wanting good back trades on their 4th pick....In a week we will be surprised I bet.
