The Miami Dolphins Explained by Sun Tzu

Perhaps the 2015 Miami Dolphins are best explained by Sun Tzu:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Viewing the Miami Dolphins in the context of this famous quote leads to some interesting conclusions. I would venture to guess Joe Philbin was unaware of the dissent worming through a locker room he declared, “Ready to compete for championships.”

Sorry Joe, that locker room was as divisive as you secretly pushing to draft Derek Carr, only you didn’t know it. The mannerisms of a coach secretly uncomfortable with his starting quarterback radiate loudly in the testosterone fueled confines of an NFL locker room.  Bill Lazor didn’t come to the conclusion Ryan Tannehill shouldn’t run audibles on his own, Joe had a say. Joe was a control freak, some call it “attention to detail,” but for Joe, it was closer to OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).

When Philbin was still with the team last season, he obviously didn’t know his enemy or his own team as the results revealed. Dan Campbell knew his team, and by having half the formula, he was capable of winning half his games. Ultimately, Campbell was overmatched when it came to knowing his enemy and Miami suffered defeat because of it.

Perhaps Sun Tzu gets too much credit for stating the obvious and issues run far deeper inside Dolphin Land. If the answer is this easy, the future may not be as bleak as the pundits would have it. 4-12, is the latest retreat from the last season’s playoff predictions and probably just as off-base.

The reasoning is simple, it’s not about talent…

It has never been about talent. The Miami Dolphins have as much talent as any team in the NFL. The issue has been leading that talent. Joe Philbin didn’t do the one thing he was brought in to accomplish, develop players. He was supposed to be a teacher, but he turned out to be an obsessive minutia manager. His locker room presence was scolding twenty something hormone raging young men for leaving Gator Gum wrappers on the floor.

He drafted a “cerebral” offensive tackle in the second round because the player fit his perception of proper behavior in the NFL. I guess Joe figured mild mannered Jonathan Martin would mend the ways of Richie Incognito and change the nature of a Center who huddled next to Aaron Hernandez in college.

Know thyself… It seems obvious, Joe didn’t know squat. He turned his back on reality and hoped things would somehow work out, he never fixed them. Philbin hired Jim Turner as OL coach and was unaware of the running 'joke' that Jonathan Martin was gay, and on at least one occasion, coach Turner participated in taunting Martin.

"Around Christmas 2012, Coach Turner gave the offensive linemen gift bags that included a variety of stocking stuffers. The gifts included inflatable female dolls for all of the offensive linemen except Martin, who received a male 'blow-up' doll," the Wells report said.

The key phrase here is, “Turner gave all of the offensive linemen except Martin.” In the locker room, all the players were on one side of the fence and one player was on the opposite. Joe allowed the discord to fester and then punished the majority, including throwing his own coach under the proverbial bus. Philbin should have traded or cut Martin immediately. This is what a leader would have done and this is when Philbin lost the Miami Dolphins.

From that point Joe’s clock was simply ticking to its inevitable end.

Phinbin turned this once proud franchise into a national media punchline, but those “news creators” just looked to pile-on an easy headline. True Miami followers know, there is an abundance of talent on this football team. The lack of national respect could have the 'Dan Campbell' effect, and bring out the best in Miami's talent but it will not be enough.

On the podium stands Adam Gase, a young up-and-comer with what many claim “an exceptional” mind. He’s young enough to perhaps have the “know thyself” arena covered, but suppose Gase is smart enough to have the “know thy enemy” covered as well? Suppose Gase can stare down Belichick and not blink?

Tony Sparano used the wildcat to one-up Belichick. The season may have been without Brady, but the formation did indeed fool Genius Bill for a fleeting moment.

It points back to our friend Sun Tzu, not in the sense that Sparano knew his enemy, but because the formation attacked his enemy’s weaknesses. Sparano didn’t really understand why the wildcat worked, if he did, he would still be a NFL head coach. This is the message for Adam Gase, your enemies all have weaknesses.

To exploit those weaknesses, you must understand them.

Know thy enemy and know thyself and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles…

The Miami Dolphins Welcome in The Modern NFL

In retrospect - the 8-8 Dolphin season stood on the fifty yard-line like a big fat elephant squawking at the NFL with uplifted trunk trumpeting a dirge march. The unscrupulous media can never let a sleeping dog lie or allow the dead to rest in peace. Incongruently, Richie Incognito's head butting with poor Young Johnny Martin followed the Dolphins until alas… We welcome in the new NFL.

Flowing in locker room vernacular like Dom Perignon at a rookie hazing bash, the “N” word between black men is as common as “Dude” in Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure.

Whoa, Miami is on the forefront of changing generations of black speak - excellent dude - totally!

Oh, yes that too is on you Young Johnny, “the N-word falls under that category,” said St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher, a member of the competition committee. “The officials will be empowered to call a foul if there are racial slurs or statements regarding another player’s sexual orientation, or even bating and insulting with verbal abuse. It is going to be a very significant point of emphasis."

Mom always said, “If you don’t have something nice to say, STFU!” Sorry mom, the “F” word has been outlawed!

Sexual orientation should not be an issue. After all Young Johnny Martin’s skirt got ‘blowed’ up exposing his orientation and he got traded to the fair city where gaiety marches down the street drinking bubbly concoctions. This cup of political incorrectness runith over and that “runith” has a prominent lisp…

We may as well face it, football is a marked man, or a marked “it”, or a disoriented man, or a non – “N” man, or a white receiver playing an “N” position, all this damn orientation is making me dizzy!

What the hell, just get it over with and let the girls in.

If one naked butt is admirable in the locker room, all naked butts should be admirable in the locker room. What kind of world do we live in where the sexual fixation of one orientation is acceptable, and the other is forbidden?

Think about it, the inclination to play tennis is a lot more inviting when you get to shower with Maria Sharapova!  Yes, that’s soooo gay, but in the happy sort of way!

Hey don’t get all ‘blowed’ up at me! Shooting the messenger with vitriol in the comments section will suffice…

Did I say shower with Maria Sharapova!!! Dang this juxtaposed world got a little brighter with that thought.

Wait am I allowed to think about that? Now look what I’ve gone and done, got my little white-pea-brain thinking about water flowing all over Maria Sharapova and me with a creamy bottle of soap gel! STOP!!!!!! Oh no I can’t stop it! Forgive me while I step away and rub one, wait STOP!!!!!!!

After the cigarette - My platitudes have returned to a lower arousal state and I wonder, if a guy can run like a cheetah, is he automatically a cheata’? I mean, people don’t get ‘blowed’ up with all that musculature without the wonders of modern chemistry.

How could Mike Tyson be all cutup ready to strike like a black mamba and talk like Young Johnny Martin’s little sister?

Sorry I’m not reverting to Richie, I said speak like Johnny Martin’s little sister, not sleep with Johnny’s little sister, if only my tweats came out the way I intended…

Am I supposed to believe Richie normally cycles between ‘roid rage and mister nice guy because he’s bipolar and not a raging ‘roider? The secrets Young Johnny could tell, best we trade him to the land of misfit toys before big boy’s toys get taken away for turning a blind-eye to HGH, et el…

Richie, Richie… Are you out there? Your cred sux bro, you could go on ESPN Insider NFL Monday Thru Thursday Excluding Tuesday Edition and still the couch potatoes would yawn. Richie, you rubbed a golf club on a women’s crotch, bro…

It doesn’t matter if the shorts were smaller than Johnny’s Speedo! Bra, no, not what was containing her bosom, it’s Johnny’s new Cali word for bro. Passé bra, that’s what you are Richie, a bro in a bra world…

Does anyone have a bloody spot of tea? It’s like what came first the rugby pitch or the soccer field? Sports seem to run parallel to history, the Romans had those huge arenas where gladiators bashed each other’s heads in when the Legions were conquering the world.

After the conquest, the sport of gladiating became a brutal reminder of how slaves were forced into the ring and slaughtered. Such an untidy business, the whole thumbs’ up - thumbs’ down thing.

At least they all wore skirts and took baths rubbing butts together, no locker room antics to worry about. Those Roman’s had it going on, until they didn’t… Forget about Maria Sharapova Richie, you’re invisible to her! Ha! I couldn't resist!

Billions in revenue based on brutality are certainly at odds with 280 pounds of force moving at 4.5 speed. Heads and knees are in particular jeopardy but saying, “That’s why you’re getting paid millions of dollars,” is pertinent only if you’re not a lawyer.

Bleeding heart jurors don’t care is players willfully consent to pain-for-gain. Of course the defendant is incapable of making choices after 10,000 head bashes and 2,000 dive blocks. Hell Johnny only needed 500 head slams to know his Stanford brain needed to get the hell out before he started rubbing golf clubs on girl's crotches…

The obvious question must be, “At what point is playing consensual?” When the bleeding hearts can overrule a professional contract with a player’s signature, it won’t be long before 12 year-old kids are standing in the courtroom with their hands out?

I wonder if the 12 disciples signed a contract before Pontius Pilate got a hold of them. No wait, that’s when Romans were Romans…

Jesus, it’s all so politically incorrect we may as well strap on flags and get it over with. The little flags fluttering in the wind branded with Young Johnny’s bullied caricature in Technicolor as the poster-boy for the pansied future of our beloved game.

Butt hey think about it… Maria Sharapova in one of those skimpy tennis outfits with brand new Johnny flags running around tight-end and you getting all reachy-grabby! Oh yeah baby!

No wait, I digress it was the Richie coming out! I forgot, we’re no longer allowed to be men and play a man’s sport. We need to think about orientations and whether girly-men and manly-girls have their own little butt space, Omaha, Omaha…

I’m with you mom, STFU while I’m behind… Butt, Butt…

STFU!!!

The Miami Dolphins - Caught in the Crosshairs

The game of professional football is violent. Men make enormous sums of money recklessly subjecting their bodies to horrific injury playing it. They enter the arena knowing their career could end on every snap. No place on earth is like a football locker room. Even in a marine boot camp, the inevitability of going under a surgeon’s knife does not permeate the air. This place is a domain where the only man without a scalpel’s scar, is a man who will eventually have one.

Comparison to a school bus, a schoolhouse, a normal workplace, a gym or even a military barracks is grossly ignoring the dynamics of this unique environment. In the places listed above, one should expect to peacefully navigate those halls without the threat of violence, but football is a world based on violence. It is a world where a man’s livelihood is derived from how well he delivers violence. Unlike a boxer who is mano-e-mano opposite a single opponent, the football player must exist as part of a team.

On a team where the object is to distribute violence better than the opponent, imagine a teammate whose mentality does not fit the environment. He enters this world because his draft status carries with it a multi-million dollar payday. Having played the game most of his life he believes he can handle this level until the realization becomes obvious, he is not violent enough. He could walk away to pursue other careers, but there are few with multi-million dollar paydays. The management that offered him the contract cannot simply fire him because he was drafted, not hired. They don’t get to try the draft again.

Squandering multi-millions of dollars is not an option management can explain away without their own judgment coming into question. In the locker room, teammates know the tale all too well. A player is drafted in a pay-slot way above his ability and they are expected to remain silent while he is given opportunities equivalent to his draft status. Some must sit on the bench knowing they are better players but because of the draft, are paid drastically less. Some must take the field with this player.

Those players watch a QB take hit after hit reminded repeatedly, the game is a business. Try as they may, they cannot walk through the locker room knowing a player does not belong regardless of his draft status and remain silent. There must be a rite of passage, there must be a pecking order established in a world where the slightest mistake ends another man's career. It’s not a baseball team where a mistake means a highly paid player bats ninth. A mistake in the NFL literally costs a player his knees or worse.

The pecking order in the locker room means the designated leader is expected to “help” the draft day mistake become, at least a cog in the wheel. In a place where violence is normal how can leadership be equated to a place where violence is abhorred? It cannot. The comparison cannot be made. Rules that make sense outside are laughable in this place, where the stitch pattern of a knee scar is as common as a neck tie in the normal world. The question is, can the locker room be regulated without destroying the NFL?

The dynamics are unfathomable on so many levels. An obviously brutish asshole on the outside world is an alpha male leader on the inside world. A mountain of a man on the outside world is not violent enough among the mountainous men on the inside world. Can a man who takes punishing head-on collisions play after play be unable to take the hateful words of another man, even when those words are common in his environment?

A football locker room is a sanctuary for the players. On practice fields and meeting rooms, coaches control and teach, but players police the locker room. In the locker room, players are expected to resolve their differences among their own. Even if those differences lead to fistfights, they are expected to remain in that domain between those people. If differences cannot be resolved, the players are expected to follow the chain of command as they would in any organization.

A team can never function when grievances are aired outside the organization.  The right and the wrong cannot be aired for public consumption because the general public could not exist in a work place centered on violence. The public must make a choice between losing the game they are watching in record numbers or allowing the game to exist on its own terms. Those terms are not acceptable in any other work place. Running full speed and smashing a man head-on as hard as possible, is the game. Expecting to establish common policy in an uncommon place is paramount to destroying the game.

The boorish asshole is banished, the man not cutout for the violence, quit. The media having its frenzy must recognize its own vulnerability in the bright lights of the information age. The media exists because of the game. If it cannot allow the NFL to define its workplace as uncommon in the eyes of the law, the nature of the product will lead to its demise.

Players are paid millions of dollars because of this unique venue. Those same players cannot expect common treatment in the eyes of the law if they eagerly accept uncommon paychecks. Fans and media must differentiate the NFL from the common workplace or the NFL will not survive. Former players willfully paid to bash their heads into other men were awarded an enormous sum because lawyers declared them not responsible for their own actions.

Give those same lawyers one more step into this game and the media that makes their living off reporting the NFL and fans who spend their Sundays watching the NFL will be left wondering…

How did we let the game slip away…

A Dolphin Shout Out to Jake Long

The day following the 2012 draft, which included Stanford tackle Jonathan Martin going to the Miami Dolphins, Jeff Ireland was quoted as saying, "Last night I saw an article about Jake Long. I have plans to keep Jake Long right here for a long time. We drafted Jonathan Martin to be a right tackle on this football team. A right tackle on this football team so let's don't speculate any further than that."

That was then and this is now... As Ireland said then, the Dolphins would love to keep Jake Long in Miami for a long time, but the economics of the NFL may not allow it. Tom Condon, Long’s agent has been throwing around Joe Thomas numbers, $84 million over seven years, with $44 million guaranteed. Long currently sits on injured reserve, pulling in a tidy $11.2 million this season, in the final year of his $57.75 million rookie contract.

Jake Long was the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and ended up in the Pro Bowl following each of his first four NFL seasons, but injuries have begun to take a toll. After making 42 consecutive starts, Long had missed a total of 18 snaps to start his career, participating in 99.4 percent of a total 2,838 snaps. Start number 43 would come with the help of a space-age shoulder harness. On November 14th of the 2010 season against the Tennessee Titans, Long dislocated his left shoulder and tore his labrum.

Jake Long earned the respect of the entire Dolphins organization by playing out the 2010 season with the harness. Immediately following the final game, Long had shoulder surgery to repair the torn labrum. Still rehabbing the injury, he began the 2011 pre-season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Long could participate in conditioning and workout with the team, but he couldn’t participate in football drills until he was taken off the list. By the start of the 2011 regular season, Long was pronounced healthy and he reclaimed his left tackle position.

Long left a December 11th Loss to the Eagles with a lower back injury, he would return the following week after intense rehab. The return was short lived, in a December 24th loss to the Patriots, Long tore his right biceps, four days later he was placed on injured reserve; his 2011 season over. The biceps was surgically repaired and following another off-season of rehab, Long was pronounced healthy for the opening of training camp in 2012.

2012 training camp, with the new coaching staff was going well, the biceps a non-issue, when on August 27th, Jake Long suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during practice. Less than two weeks prior to Miami's season opener against the Houston Texas, Long was again hobbled. Like the true warrior he has proven to be, Jake Long put on the brace, took a shot of the NFL wonder drug Toradol and saddled up to face J.J. Watt and the Texans, a team Miami has never beaten.

The game started well for Long until Watt took advantage of his limitations, batting two passes that went for interceptions. The Texans forced three turnovers on three plays and scored 21 points in 1:46 at the end of the first half, taking control in a 30-10 season-opening victory. Watt has gone on to have a stellar season with 20.5 sacks, two shy of Michael Strahan's record of 22.5 set in 2001 and still one game remaining to play. Slowed by injury, Long could not hold up against Watt and looked a step slow the entire season.

On December 2nd against the rival New England Patriots, Jake Long tore his left triceps. He was placed on Injured Reserve Tuesday, Dec. 4, his 2012 season ending much like 2011. The rookie Jonathan Martin was pressed into service at left tackle and has played well enough for Dolphin fans to question whether Ireland is still sticking by the quote he made after the draft. Martin may not have the physical presence of Jake Long, but he is a perfect fit for the zone-blocking scheme that head coach Joe Philbin brought to Miami.

It is rumored that Miami could franchise Long, but it’s an expensive proposition. According to Mike Florio of NFL-Talk , the tender for an offensive lineman in 2012 was worth $9.383 million and will remain in that area as the salary cap is expected to remain flat in 2013. However, that won't matter for Long as his franchise tag would be worth $15.36 million, 120 percent his 2012 cap number of $12.8 million. That price seems disproportionate for a player who has not been healthy enough to finish his last two seasons.

Florio has also speculated that Long's agent is possibly seeking a minimum of $26.56 million in full guarantees (Long's 2012 base salary, plus his franchise tag in 2013) and over $45 million in total guarantees. Long would earn $44.992 million if he played out this season and were franchised in both 2013 and 2014 and that might be why the Dolphins aren't rushing to make a deal.  These numbers don’t make sense in light of Long’s injury history.

This is an example of when an NFL team must cut ties with a player if the right contract numbers cannot be reached. It has nothing to do with whether the Dolphins believe in Jake Long or think he could continue to be an integral part of the offense, it is pure economics. Another team may be willing to pay the price Long’s agent is asking but the Dolphins are not. It is obvious, Tom Condon has not tried to lower the price tag on Long, or an extension would have already been inked.

The only hope of Jake Long returning to the Dolphins may have to come from Long himself. If Jake Long wants to be a Dolphin and is willing to accept a contract more in-line with his performance, (still exceptional but not franchise) he will have to step in between Condon and Ireland and make the deal. Ireland would be remiss in his duties to the Miami Dolphins if he were to spend the money Condon is demanding.

For these reasons, only Jake Long can extend his stay in Miami… He is a great presence and when healthy, a great player, but the chances of Condon or Ireland blinking are not likely and Jake has probably played his last game as a Miami Dolphin.

If that turns out to be true, we at Dolphinshout would like to order up a huge…
