What Is the Dolphins Strength Now?

Hello Dol-Fans!

While Miami’s Offense showed some flashes of brilliance in “Primetime” last Monday night, the Defense surprisingly collapsed! The supposed “strength” of the ‘Fins team, was outplayed virtually the entire game, and even more distressing…appeared pitifully out of shape down the stretch.

Even the crudest football fan, could easily identify and diagnose the colossal blunders and problem areas in the game, so what has the Front Office/Coaching Staff done to fix it? They released CB Benny Sapp, and replaced him with recentlyreleased CB Will Allen. Let’s be honest… they never should’ve released Will Allen in the first place, but does this really solve the monumental problem areas heading into Week 2? Unfortunately, there’s not a clear Yes or No answer to this question; it’s both! Let’s start with the Yes part. Will Allen is a better “Cover Corner” and provides a knowledgeable veteran presence in the Nickel. The No part of the answer, is that he’s not a great tackler, nor does he offer much by way of pressuring/pass rushing.

HC Tony Sparano said the decision to release Allen was due to health concerns they had about him during the Pre Season, and Sapp was the healthier of the two, therefore they kept Sapp. Apparently, that was the wrong decision… considering how many times Sapp looked like a sap in coverage. Shocker; not!

I applaud the Organization for coming to their senses and resigning Will Allen however, major concerns about the pass rush (or lack thereof) remain. How will that the addressed and corrected? Suggestion - more frequently change the frontseven look and attempt to disguise the Blitzer. They also need to be more creative by adding a Safety or Corner into the pass rushing mix on obvious passing downs/situations and dialing up the pressure.

In short… the Defense was “too vanilla” last Monday, and paid the price. Let’s hope they add some Tabasco to it this week, and renew the Strength of the Dolphins team.

What do you think?

Miami Dolphins Re-sign CB Will Allen

In an obvious attempt to fix the problem that was the Miami Dolphins defense Monday night, the Dolphins have re-signed CB Will Allen, who they just recently cut. This is according to Pro Football Talk.

I am glad they did this, because Miami's corners were hurting against the Patriots and Allen makes them significantly better.

I'm keeping this short because I am posting from my phone. I just wanted to let you guys know.

Let me know what you think below in the comments.

Will Allen Is Returning To The Miami Dolphins

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that the Miami Dolphins wouldn't be keeping Will Allen because of how much they would have had to pay him for his services next season. Now, it turns out that Miami will keep him after the two sides agreed on a restructured contract.

Allen's original base salary that the Dolphins weren't willing to pay was $5.5 million. The details of his newly restructured contract have not been released yet, but Allen's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has said that the deal's base salary is much smaller than the previous $5.5 million.

This could end up being a good move or a bad move for Miami depending on how much the new deal is worth.

If the Dolphins were able to significantly reduce Allen's contract to under, say, $3 million, then I think it would be a good deal because they are getting a veteran presence for a cheap price. If the deal is worth more than $3 million, then I don't think they made a good decision, because while he would contribute, Miami doesn't need him that badly. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith should be playing most of the time, and I don't think it's worth paying $3 million or more for a backup.

One thing that Allen does do that Sean Smith sometimes struggles with is catching the ball. That is probably one of the reasons why the Dolphins still want to hold on to him, but hopefully Sean's catching has improved enough so Allen won't need to come in for him.

I am interested to see how many years are in the deal. Allen has been in the NFL for 10 seasons, and the most recent four seasons have been with Miami. If both sides are willing, this could be a contract that keeps him with the Dolphins for the rest of his career.

We will see what happens. Thanks for reading, and please feel free to comment.

Miami Dolphins To Release Will Allen In More Than Just A Smart Business Decision

This might be one of the few smart moves that the Miami Dolphins have made since their season ended in early January. According to Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel, the Miami Dolphins are expected to release veteran CB Will Allen next month.

I like this move for two main reasons. The first is that they will save $5.5 million next year, which would have been the second highest salary for a Dolphin next season.

Another reason I like this move is that it shows that Miami's coaches and staff have faith in the young corners on the team.

We all knew that Vontae Davis was one of the best cornerbacks in the league, but there were some questions about the team's second corner: Sean Smith. Smith fit the second corner role very well in the second half of the season after being benched at the beginning of the season, and the Dolphins appear to be confident enough in Smith's ability that they don't feel the need to hold on to Allen anymore.

Most of you guys probably don't know this, but I am a huge Sean Smith fan. Some of you who have been reading my blog since the beginning of the season will remember me talking about him, but those of you newcomers may not know.

The fact that the Dolphins are showing faith in Smith's abilities makes me happy because he is a very talented cornerback with a lot of potential, and his height is definitely a plus.

The move also tells us that Miami's other young corners have developed well enough that they don't need Allen's help anymore. This is a good sign because, while our offense doesn't seem to be making progress, at least we know our defense has been progressing along well.

So, while it may just seem like a business decision to release Allen, it is actually a vote of confidence by the team to a young secondary.

Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think about the move.

Jason Allen Has Been Named Starter For Miami Dolphins

Meet Our New Starting CB
You know we are in trouble when Jason Allen is starting over Sean Smith.

Maybe Jason Allen has finally developed into a good corner, and maybe he will be a big contributor to the Miami Dolphins. That's not likely, though.

The move of benching Sean Smith in favor of Jason Allen is a big concern to me. It is a bad thing for two reasons. One, Smith must be really struggling, and two, we have to resort to putting Allen in there.

This move also comes at a terrible time because veteran CB Will Allen has just been put on IR, so he can't step in.

There are three good scenarios that we can only hope for:
1. The Dolphins pick up another very talented CB off waivers or free agent, but that is unlikely because there probably isn't too much talent available.

2. Jason Allen ends up being a very successful corner. He hasn't done too much in his 5 year career, but maybe he has really started developing. One can only hope.

3. Sean Smith comes back and better than ever. This would be my preferred outcome. Smith is my favorite player on the Miami Dolphins. I'm not positive, but it is possible he has just gotten a little bit lazy this off-season. I honestly do not know for sure, but I don't know why else he would have lost his spot to Allen.

Hopefully we end up with one of those outcomes, but I am not really sure that we will. This team looked so good in the off-season and coming into the preseason. Injuries and poor exhibition play has really dampened my spirits.

What is even worse is the fact that my two favorite players on the Dolphins have been traded away and benched in the last month. Smith has been benched and Greg Camarillo was traded to the Minnesota Vikings for CB Benny Sapp.

With the way our luck is, Sapp may end up being the starter because Allen isn't doing well, either.

Oh well, I am still excited about this year. Hopefully Brandon Marshall is all he was in Denver and more, because we definitely need him now.

Miami Dolphins CB Will Allen Will Be Missed During Training Camp

News of the Miami Dolphins CB Will Allen's arthroscopic surgery has just recently surfaced, and while he will only miss training camp, he will be missed none the less.

The surgery was apparently a clean up from his surgery last fall.

I know that Allen isn't the starter at CB, but having him helped the starters a lot. He was added depth at the position, and depth made the competition better.

It motivated Sean Smith to perform better at the scrimmage after Allen was put in the 1st-string defense during the previous practice. Competition brings out the best in players, and losing Allen takes away some of the challenge.

Thankfully, Miami's other rookie CB Nolan Carroll is still there to add some competition. He has done really well and should keep the competition up, but not as much as Allen.

Just hope that Allen can recover as quickly as possible. We need him back to help keep up the competition.

Depth is the key, and competition will create a champion
