Miami Dolphins Trade Up And Select RB Daniel Thomas In 2nd Round

Just when I finally thought the Miami Dolphins would pick Ryan Mallett after trading up they go and select RB Daniel Thomas from Kansas State.

The Dolphins traded their third round pick, a fifth round pick, and a seventh round pick to the Washington Redskins for their 62nd overall pick.

My question is: why would Miami trade up and get rid of three draft picks so they can get Thomas?

My impression of Thomas is that he is just a solid running back. I haven't done much research on him, but that is what I have heard about him. He doesn't have breakaway speed. He has been clocked at a 4.58 40-yard dash. He is a pretty big back as well. I believe that he will be good in the NFL, but I don't think he was as good of a pick as Mallett would have been.

Last night I could kind of understand the Dolphins passing up Mallett because it was early in the draft, but tonight I don't understand why they would pass up on Mallett after giving away three draft picks.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you guys think.

Am I missing something? Did we not need a RB? Enough with the QB's already. The top 2 needs on this team were interior OL and RB coming in to the draft. They have addressed both. I wish they didnt have to give up the 5th rounder too but so be it. This class of QB's looks to be the worst in a long time. Ryan Mallett? Get real. DL help or a TE should be next.
Henne is not the future... Who is making these picks for us ?? The Pats ? And we give up way to many yards in the air.. Heres your sign
you gays just dont get it you just stuck on QB its about wining with out a good OL and ground game you wont win all QB need protaction and RB need a good OL no QB can make it with a bad OL i dont care how good they are

Thomas was a horrible pick. Why would you pick up Thomas when you could pickup Williams in FA and resign Brown and have Sheets in the backfield. Would of bet anything when i saw Miami trade up that it was going to be Mallett and getting Mallett and Pouncey in this draft would of been a solid decision. Well this could only mean two things, Miami is going with Henne or picking up a FA and with the 8th district court putting things back on hold i dont know how fast a vet will pickup the offense if this lockout eats up camp time. Well bright side to all this if Henne give us another losing season we have a shot at drafting Luck next year

you think the fins will be bad enough to get a shot at Luck next year? That's possible but with this regime running the Dullfins, they'll trade the pick away to the Pats or the Jest or... draft a punter! Ireland...Supranno...Ross...THEY SUCK!!!
I called this in your last post. Thomas would be gone in second round but they still went up and got him. I'm ok with the pick seeing what ended up being there after 79. I suppose I would have been.. ok with Edmund Gates or even a pass catching TE at 79 but im also ok with giving up the 5th to secure the rusher they wanted. He was high on thier board. Mayok on NFL network had him as the 3rd best guy.

Others arent high on him. We'll have to see. Hes a 1 cut big runner. And I think Daboll is gonna implement a zone blocking scheme. Which is why they drafted the amazing pulling guard/center in the 1st. And now they get a 1 cut runner to go with the system. Pretty good IMO.

I told you. Ireland praised Mallet in a press conference. All that meant was they would not be drafting him.

This is definitely a vote in Henne though. This draft speaks volumes. I hope hes been working hard and the new O coord can make him good.
We continue to think we have a chance to get D Williams. If the nfl goes by last years cba, Williams is only a restricted FA from what I heard. That means the Panthers can match the best deal he can make with another team. Plus Williams has said he wants to play for a team that has a good QB, does anyone think we have that ? I'll tell you who does and they need a RB badly and that is the Colts. I don't see Williams coming here, that ship never docked in Miami.

It's my feeling that Brown is finished in Miami. I'm not sure he can pass a physical for any other team either. He could be done, I think the injuries caught up with him.

This is only what I'm thinking based on zero facts. Oh and just for fun Thomas has also passed the ball from the tail back position at KS. The WC is not dead the way I see it.
Well hes a good pass catcher is the main thing I think. Daboll had a lot to do with this pick I think. We'll see what his new offense has in store for this player. You know who else has an up right running style that "couldnt make people miss". The RB Daboll had last year. The guy who is on the cover of madden. Hillis.
Daniel Thomas isn't a bad RB infact scouts around the league have him 2nd-3rd best RB in the draft, now with that being said, I CAN"T JUSTIFY/UNDERSTAND!!! trading up & giving up 3 draft picks for him... I tell you this regime SUCKS!!! Exception being DC Nolan

I agree. The key being, giving up so much for just an good RB. I have read Thomas can be good in pass protection, but again, they give up 3 draft picks for OK. I have also heard he may have an issue with coughing up the ball.
This is what happens when you have a minor league management team. You guys can still remember the coaching fiasco of a few months ago. These people are in soooo far over their heads it's unbelievable.
Trade Ireland, Soprano and Ross!!! What fricking BONEHEADS!!!!! I do like the Kansas State running back, but don't we need an O Line & possibly a QB?

this is a 37 year fan of the dolphins, the dolphins are owned by non-football people, they do not know what they are doing! get ready for another lack luster season, can anyone say where is the TUNA!!!!

The TUNA didn't do jack for this team. He is an over rated fat ass. period.
OK, if I am going to look at the bright side, the silver lining etc, these are all safe picks and when you have kindergarteners at work, best idea is to leave it basic for them so that they don't hurt themselves or others, that's why I have been ranting the entire off seson to not let these people (3 stooges) come near the big guns. That was the logic behind all my ranting about keeping it simple, basic and low risk, even with that said, they still managed to give away 3 picks but, hopefully the draft will be over soon before the 3 amigos can cause irreperable damage.
4-12 next year. Dolphins draft F-. I think Sparano and CO did this because of what was done to them after last season. I think this was pay back.
As long as Ross is the owner we may end up like the Raiders/Davis or Cowboys/Jones... I really would like to clean house & see a new regime, Cowher will turn the Fins 180 degrees although I really like what Nolan has done on the D
