The Miami Dolphins enter 2014 season transitioning a new general manager supposedly finally on the same page with the head coach. A roster boasting the possibility of 12 rookies. The Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel’s David Hyde calling for the playoffs or house-cleaning... It's the annual beginning of the season ritual for the Dolphins, boom or bust!
A dose of reality shouldn’t be difficult for the Miami faithful when considering the last Super Bowl victory was a mere forty years ago. A forty-year drought should provide enough caffeine in the wake-up-call to resist the formula of constant churn, but it’s good media. Turmoil sells, the media figured this out long ago. Unfortunately for the writers, Stephen Ross intends to stand by the men he chose to lead this team after the Parcells debacle, leaving one person with the ball clearly in his hands.
Ryan Tannehill...
Certainly, it’s a lot of burden to place on one man, but the NFL is a league dominated by the performance of one player, the quarterback. To imply there are no other problematic areas on the football team would be foolish, but the playoffs are not like the illusive forty-year drought monster. Any NFL team can make the playoffs with stellar QB play. The Dolphins have enough weapons to join the playoff ranks.
It would be quick to say this article is another stirring of the pot but the message is simple, don’t blow up all the pieces if only one is the problem. The intent is not to hand Ryan Tannehill a pink-slip stamped with a declaration of his inability to play quarterback at the NFL level. The message is for him to prove he belongs.
Boss Ross has a unique ability to see beyond the BS and make proper conclusions. Jeff Ireland’s ineptitude made it easy for Ross to see the need for a new GM. Watching Daniel Thomas and Michael Egnew hit the waiver wire certainly added credence to that decision. Given the opportunity to prove he belonged, Ireland’s top 3 picks in 2013 barely touched the field.
Mike Sherman may have been a little harder decision with the OL problems and inconsistency at QB, but it was obvious the offense lacked flair. Mike Sherman was not going to be the OC to provide a progressive scheme, with or without an OL or consistent QB. From the beginning, Ross said he wanted a high-octane NFL offense, to get there Sherman had to go. Ross gave both Ireland and Sherman the opportunity and when they failed, he fired them.
Herein lies the problem for Ryan Tannehill, Sherman was undoubtedly influential in the decision to draft the Texas A&M QB. In this high-stakes arena, Sherman placed his future on the line by guaranteeing Tannehill was the man for the job. Without Sherman, Tannehill would probably not be in Miami. Luckily, Stephen Ross gives opportunity before making rash decisions.
During the 2014 preseason, it was quite interesting to watch Bill Lazor’s offense. It was obvious Ross and Philbin made an excellent choice at offensive coordinator. Seeing Ja’Wuan James step in at right tackle and a Miami team sporting 12 rookies validates Dennis Hickey. These two choices have one thing in common, they go against the good-old-boy network of replacing retreads with retreads. Tannehill was not chosen by the GM and not indorsed by the OC.
Ryan Tannehill is in a precarious position this year, he needs to perform or his job is in jeopardy like Ireland and Sherman before him. Ross has done his weeding in the front office, for the moment. He is happy with the performance of the head coach he selected and he likes the GM he chose. Should the offense flounder, Tannehill stands as the fall guy if he is incapable of running Bill Lazor’s scheme.
There is a positive thread in what may be interpreted as a negative narrative, it has been a long time since the key positions off the field have been competently filled. Kevin Coyle is a good defensive coordinator and 12 rookies hints at the lack of depth on his roster (not to mention Ireland's brilliance at selecting FA linebackers). It means the churning is over for the Miami Dolphin coaching staff and front office. Stephen Ross is finally happy.
In a league dominated by QB play, Tannehill’s performance will dictate whether the Dolphins reach the playoffs. The issue is of a larger magnitude for Ross, the playoffs are fine and dandy but the name of this game is Super Bowl. It is very difficult even for the ardent Tannehill fan to project him as a Super Bowl QB at this point in his career. Ross looks to end the forty year drought and knows Tannehill’s ability to play the position is paramount to seeing his dream become reality.
The reverse nature of sports is interesting; supposedly, great coaches and personnel people make great teams. The reality is, great players’ make great coaches and personnel people. Churning coaches and personnel people is usually a panacea for the inability of players, particularly the QB. Firing Jeff Ireland was correct… He was abysmal. Had he selected Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long, he would still be working in Miami.
Ireland Selected Ryan Tannehill…
From this perspective, it seems Ross has set this season up for Ryan Tannehill to make his statement or follow Ireland and Sherman out the door. Over the course of a season, the QB is the player most capable of influencing the win/loss column. If a team has a great QB, they win and if they don’t, they lose. There can be playoff seasons, maybe a Super Bowl or two, but long-term stability in the NFL rests squarely on the shoulders of the QB.
Miami has done everything right in nurturing Tannehill. They did not place undue pressure on him to be great, while at the same time gave him the experience of starting 32 NFL games. It is concerning, after 32 starts his future is still not obvious, but he has a shot. The Dolphins removed an OC who lacked vision and fired a GM with questionable talent evaluation skills. Now it is up to Tannehill to prove he has the ability to play quarterback at a high level in the NFL.
There is no right or wrong. There is no derogatory assessment of his ability. There is no prediction of the outcome. There is simply one variably that will lead to success or failure for the Miami Dolphins this season and his name is Ryan Tannehill. Stephen Ross gave Jeff Ireland and Mike Sherman the opportunity and they failed. It’s all a professional can ask for, an opportunity to be great.
Every Dolphin fan wonders the same question…
Can the Dolphins find a QB to slay the forty-year drought monster?
If Ryan Tannehill shows the way, house-cleaning will be forgotten in Miami…

Though I'd disagree with this on the now irrelevant Ireland """Had he selected Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long, he would still be working in Miami."""
Matty-Ice has one playoff W with an all-star cast for the entirety of his 6 year career, and Atlanta won four games in o13 while losing to THill & Team/Shermann/Ireland!!
Where this is placed, """Ireland Selected Ryan Tannehill...""" It sounds like a knock on THill who's had two years with a nobody cast of characters, (until now)!!!
On THill, I'd agree with """It’s all a professional can ask for, an opportunity to be great.""", and I'd include (with a legit surrounding cast for a few years)!!
THill will win a playoff game before his 5th season (ie'Matty-Ice), and WILL END-UP being better than MRyan, (if given a legit """opportunity to be great"""), IMHO !!!
GREAT-STUFFF P, GOFINS!!!

Pretty much agreed with everything else while under the impression that you too were also directing ""It’s all a professional can ask for, an opportunity to be great."" toward THill...
I got the method to your madness two articles ago, and I agree, (Poop rolls downhill) !! Though, I don't believe that THill has to become a superstar this year, and i don't believe that he'll need to be replaced (if he doesn't), as long as he continues to show Growth, Progress and a win or few more!!
AGAIN GREAT ARTICLE Patrick, GOFINS!!!

Say Miami had Matt Ryan. Do we honestly think Miami would have been better??? No Way.
Football is the ultimate team sport. One player can not control the destiny of a Football Team like many think. As I have stated before, there has been numerous players (QBS) with way less talent then Tannehill who had won the Superbowl. Take Trent Dilfer, very pedestrian, could NOT HIT A LONG PASS IF HE WANTED TO, but he has a Superbowl Ring. Case and point.
Patrick, I get your message and I am sure most of us have. But it seems to always follow this anti Tannehill propaganda. I know this is not what you are trying to say but it does come across at least to me this way.
I think everybody in the NFL media world has already made a make or break year for Tannehill. I for one think not. I see progress and improvement. Thill on his ass for most of the season still amassed close to 4000 yards and improved on his td to int ratio, all with NO LINE and NO RUNNING GAME. This speaks volumes. Ross is smarter than that.
Look guys, Ross made a lot of mistakes. But he has adjusted to them. This team is headed in the right direction. Philbin has shown adjustments from year to year. Sure Ireland was a lame duck but he did bring some talent, Wake, Wallace, Tannehill, Vernon. Some how Philbin sees the talent, Hickey is seeing it which means Ross is seeing it.
What I am saying is, Patrick is right crap rolls down hill and Tannehill might be next, I just do not want to get into this Anti Tannehill campaign again. I believe Patrick is not trying to say that either. This is a new season, let us watch the games then talk about who is getting the axe.
You have to believe things dare going forward for Miami. I love the changes Hickey and Philbin have made. Big move bringing in Lazor. I see more positive than negative. I hope I did not offend anybody and if I did I do apologize.
Good Read Patrick and Good responses KV

The other point is, Bill Lazor and Dennis Hickey have no ties to Tannehill so that kind of puts him out there if he doesn't take the next step. I hope he plays well, I really do. It's time for the Dolphins to catch a break, it's been 40 years!

One thing of note, I was listening to OLineman interviews a week or two ago,(Vets Colledge/SSmith). They were both (in separate interviews) asked about THill's o13 sacks (which they weren't a part of), and they both replied ""Take the Hill, Secure the Hill, Protect the Hill"" !!
To go along with their new ""CREDO"", it seems that they're taking the military approach!!
""“I am a Miami Dolphin.
“I am a warrior and a member of an unbeatable team.
“I will always place the team first.
“If I see something — I will say something — I commit to call it as it is.
“I will develop undying trust with the man to my left and right.
“I will never accept defeat.
“I will never quit.
“I am the change that I want to see in my team. “I live respect and truth telling.
“I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, and proficient in my position tasks and drills. “I am a professional.
“I am a Miami Dolphin.”""
Perhaps it leads to a taste of Shock & Awwww from our troops...
Colledge & SSmith are two of seven new OLineman out of ten total, and we now have a nice RB duo!! In every phase of the game, Moreno is ten times the RB that DThomas was!! ALSO, with a (season long) healthy Gibson (o13's receiving leader pre-injury) along with the addition of rookie Phenom Jarvis Landry while Rishard Matthews remains, our passing game will take quite the task to defend!! Tis-indeed time for THill to lead the charge ; ))) !!!!!!!! He/We will win the majority of battles in o14, but it'll take until at least o15 to be victorious in the war!!
GOFINS!!!

Yes, a QB can elevate the level of play and make his team mates play better, too. (Including the defense, by either keeping them off the field so they are fresh or scoring enough points so that they can afford to lay their ears back and take chances to ward off any prospect of a come back).
The likelihood of an offense winning the big one with a QB that is not at least, a decent game manager is not very high. Regardless of how many top notch players it possesses.
But like Thorny said, this is a team sport. Case in point. The Seattle Seahawk's Russel Wilson. Young, definitely not elite. Passed for almost 600 yards less than Tannehille last year. (3,367 yards, 26 TD's and only 9 INT')s. Wilson also ran the ball for 539 yards, a 5.6 yards average and a TD, as well. (Hopefully Lazor will allow Tannehill to use his athletic ability to help keep defenses reeling, too).
Yet, the Seahawks won the super bowl. How? Especially when they faced the most elite QB in the NFL who set several passing records in 2013? A balanced attack, and a stifling defense. (For a change). That is how. They seem to have broken the rule in this pass happy league, but the team as a whole is solid and formidable.
Miami has had a defense that is capable and playoff worthy for some time now. The Broncos had the 25th ranked defense last season which did not fare well when they ran up against this potent running game, a competent QB and a tough, physical defense.
Look at New England's lackluster but opportunistic defense. Or New Orlean's, Green Bay's. All of them super bowl winners. If Miami had a better offense, they could have at least hit the playoffs in the last two years. They were mathematically in the running, late into the 2012/2013 seasons. When I think of all the inordinate times Tannehill's passes were dropped. why....they could have been a contender!
My point in all of this is, a TEAM has to hit the field. A QB's performance is probably the most pivotal aspect in determining the outcome of such a contest. But with so many game changing variables, "on any Sunday" as they say.
I hope Ryan Tannehill makes enough of an improvement this year to warrant our doing all we have to build an offense around him and give him some serious weapons to work with. He has the skill set, the arm and the athletic ability. The idea of cleaning house again just doesn't appeal to me.
Miami has had more general managers in the last ten years than any franchise in the NFL. (5). And 5 HC's in the same time, (Which ties only two other clubs that have not reached the main event in a decade, too). I agree with Ross's desire to maintain a certain continuity with his players and staff.
Now let's go kick some Patriotic ass this weekend!

And Ross did make a few mistakes, but he wouldn't be a billionaire if he did not learn from them. You have to expect some growing pains. A first time purchaser of an NFL franchise would not be privy to all aspects of what ownership entails. After all, there are only 32 team owners at any given time in the world. He is also smart for bringing in football people to help him learn how to manage the variable involved in being an owner, too.
You and Patrick are right about crap rolling down hill, too. At this juncture, Tannehill has no excused not to succeed. He has a creative, progressive OC in Bill Lazor that will scheme and call plays that will best maximize his talents and abilities. This should give him, (and the offense as a whole) the best chance of being productive and making things happen on the field.
Philbin, being an OC himself, was instrumental in the development of Aaron Rodgers and that juggernaut of an offense that the Packers became. It took him more than 3 years to bring Green Bay around to the potent offensive power house it was when he finally left to take over here, with the Dolphins. (And he did it with a minimal ground game too).
I'm glad he and Lazor still recognize the importance of a balanced attack. Philadelphia was the #1 ranking running attack in the league last year. (After ranking 13th in 2012, and with pretty much, the same group of RB's, too). The difference? Chip Kelly's fast paced offense which helped to keep defenses off balanced and unable to make personnel changes on the field. (Without getting penalized for having too many players on the field). Ultimately, this type of hurry off game plan will wear down a defense.
If Lazor is only half as successful in his first season of bring Miami's team up to this level of play, we are in for some real treats as fans, and some exciting football, too. Go Fins!

I believe we have a defense that is geared to get after Brady, cover Gronkowski and that potent passing attack. We always seem to give Tom Brady fits when we put him in pressure situations and disrupt his timing.
We match up well with them. The only thing that we have to watch out for is executing this new offensive game plan, the hurry up style of play, and limiting turn overs. (Something New England is notorious for taking advantage of).
And New England's hurry up offense is not going to be as productive as we have more versatility on defense to stop what ever they may throw at us without having to substitute players. (Literally). And we are more use to the heat than they will be. It might just do more to tire them out and backfire on them. And if we get too much of an early lead they could definitely self destruct. (Be nice if it happens to them for a change instead of us).
I expect Lazor is going to have some plays exclusively designed to take advantage of the Patriot's weaknesses. (They do have an improving defense but will still be learning to work together this early in the season). They won't be expecting what Bill Lazor has in store for them. (Remember the wildcat play that tore them a new one during Sparano's early years)?
This is why we played so close to the vest during the preseason. So as not to tip our hand and give them fore knowledge of all the weapons we also have at our disposal this year.
If we execute well and limit the turn overs, it should be enough to give us a victory. Especially on our home turf against the perennial AFC East favorite that everyone expects to win the division. (If not the AFC Title, all together).
We have been preparing for this game a lot longer than these last 10 days would suggest. New England waltzes into Miami at the perfect time. This is an ideal situation to make a statement.
We stomped them here in the first half of our early meeting, last year in every important statistical category. But fell apart in the second half and let them come back to beat us. (Thanks in part, to Sherman's predictable offensive strategy). We still wound up splitting with them on the season, though.
Come on Sunday!

And I believe that was during the players strike, when they didn't have access to the off season team facilities which really hurt teams once we got back to football as usual.
Seems like our last two preseason games at home, the team looked like they were handling the heat and humidity well enough. I don't see how the Patriots can properly prepare for the Miami heat/humidity in New England. They certainly aren't spending the week down near Miami to prep for this contest.
About the closest thing New England is going to get to an advantage is if Belichick does a good job of picking Jone's brain about our defensive schemes since they got him from us just before our game with them. (Coincidence)?
Of course, Coyle will be altering the defensive signal calls to prevent the Patriots from getting advanced warning as to what defensive plays we will be using. It will be interesting how long Belichick will be keeping Jones after the game.
I hear he likes to bring in players from his division rivals to pick their brains so they can learn what the competition is doing to prepare for their games with them. I don't know if it's a ploy to psychic rivals out because most teams are smart enough to disguise their play calling to nullify such an advantage.
To me, it seems like it's cheating and rather underhanded to use such a ploy. I know Shula would not have been so dishonorable. (The game in Oakland where the Raiders accidentally left the game plans in the locker room the Dolphins were using). (Shula didn't want anything to do with the game plan and had it disposed of. But I guess they did not nick name Bill Belichick, "Belicheat" for nothing.

Apparently, he has SOME respect for us, seeing that he's felt the need to hide an ace up his sleeve vs us since the early 2000's (Spygate), and practically every year since with the signing of our players before the head to head and then cutting them shortly after, so that he can make room for the next opponents axed players!!!

We needed a forth RB more than a 6th WR, and in your case the 4th RB is Miller, (which we needed more than a 6th WR)!! We have 6th, 7th, & 8th WR's on the PS (should we need one)!!
Our RB's will be Moreno, Miller, D Williams, and Orleans (opps at Mardi-Gras) Darkwa...
LMiller is our #2, Moreno was pronounced as being the feature back, and will get the most carries (more times than not)!! You only hate Miller cuz he happened to be the guy that was around when your boy left for more money in FA, It's not his fault that RBush left or that he's not as good as your money-hungry boy!! You have no good reason to hate on LMiller, you wish ill upon one, you might as well curse them all, cuz if Miller goes down it just makes the team that much weaker!!
Millers a nice, young talent with a lil help from his friends (The OL), and he's in a better place now as a change-up to Moreno rather than as the main attraction !!
PS, Moreno isn't Bush either, but he's very good at everything required of a true feature Running -Back, (INSIDE, outside runner, receiver, protector of the QB, downfield blocker), he does it all well, unlike Miller and/or your-boy !!

This is the first year, when I will be able to tell how much I like or dislike Tannehill, unlike others, I refused to rate him last year while his playbook consisted of only 10 plays and 3 routes (slight exaggeration, but you all get my point), and rarely resorted to the shotgun formation, roll outs, and bootleg (except on those occasions when we actually won). We had an OC who insisted on calling for a 7 step drop by the Phins QB which often resulted in the pressure (not always from blocking inability by the LT or RT) getting there before RT could even turn around. Not going to judge # 17 because of all of it.. it is as if he had been set up to fail by his college coach and possibly biggest fan.
What do I expect? A team that may have a rough start or may struggle late if there are too many injuries but an exciting team of the likes we haven't seen in a long time around these swamps and I'm including pre-season. All I ever wanted during the Ireland nightmare was for him to get it... to stop going for the wrong people in FA and the draft and prioritize... hmmm... priorities.
I loved what Hickey has done, what Philbin is doing and the kind of INTELLIGENT offense Lazor seems to have put together which appears at first glance, to be predicated on maximizing strengths rather than stubbornly attempting to make an SUV fit through the eye of a needle. It wont be the final record for me, it'll be instead all about the direction in which the team is going.
Tony Nicoletti · 553 weeks ago
"Lazor seems to have put together which appears at first glance, to be predicated on maximizing strengths rather than stubbornly attempting to make an SUV fit through the eye of a needle".
I prefer predicated to predictable anytime, myself.
And we can expect shotguns, bootlegs, rollouts, quick passes, screens, a hurry up offense, motion and all things designed to maximize what our offense can do. And you are correct when you say,
"A team that may have a rough start or may struggle late if there are too many injuries but an exciting team of the likes we haven't seen in a long time around these swamps and I'm including pre-season".
It's going to take a bit for these new plays and schemes to gel and fall into place. But it will be a far more entertaining offense to watch and the sheer unpredictability alone should have more success than our previous attempt to show what we were going to do and daring defenses to stop us. (Especially, when they could and did).
I'm on board with where this train is going, too.
Patrick · 553 weeks ago
The problem with this philosophy is, the best corner always knows where to find Wallace. The safety knows where to find the TE, etc. So the Dolphins were easy to defend. The Sherman offense works when you have the biggest horses in the shed, unfortunately Miami's horses were not.
Lazor chooses to take the scheme to the defense by using movement to uncover the defense and dictate the QB read. The plays are really not much different at the snap. It's what happens before the snap that is very different. I love the way Lazor is calling plays in practice while having the defensive intentionally aligned to fool Tannehill...
It's not uncommon, but it did not seem as though Sherman was very good at predicting defensive game plans. I also thought Sherman was very poor at adjusting to the unexpected during games. He seemed to arrive with a game plan and by golly that was what they were going to do. Lazor do not seem so rigid.
Tony Nicoletti · 553 weeks ago
In a set offense, a QB can audible play changes because he knows where all his players are, (or should be) so everyone can be on the same page and realign blocking schemes, etc. But this is why you plan for various possibilities. This is where decision making comes into play. And Tannehill needs to continue improving his decision making abilities.
I love how Lazor is calling plays designed to spread defenses and/or put them off balance, to open up running lanes. In the two games we had difficulty running the ball in the first half. (In the Tampa Bay game we were -5 at the half). We were able to get some decent runs in the second half. (Due to an OC that could read defensive strengths and schemes and creatively, counter their maneuvers).
Sherman was all too willing to abandon the run which unnecessarily placed the burden on Tannehill's shoulders to pass. (That didn't help with the 58 sack count and 103 hits Ryan sustained over last season). I see Lazor's strategy paying off with some big dividends in Tannehill's development, this year.

This is where I think Sherman and Lazor differ greatly. As Jules pointed out earlier, there were a lot of 7 step drops last year. Sherman tried to use multiple crossing patterns to free receivers, but those take time. Lazor works on tempo and shorter routes with the ball coming out very quickly. This causes the defense to make plays and react faster, then a missed tackle and bye bye now.
It should keep Tannehill off the ground, but there is a downside in that a bad decision can be very costly with balls thrown close to the line of scrimmage... Pick 6's and field position result in INTs thrown on quick outs and bubble screens. Tannehill is used to a more vertical attack with a little more decision time. These passes come out fast and a mistake is very costly. So there could be some growing pains early.

The great NE Patriots scared of the lowly Miami Dolphins! You think the players in Miami don't notice that as well... Belichick is out smarting himself. And you thought he practiced against the Eagles to gain an advantage on us because he would understand the offense better. No - He used to go up to Oregon and sit with Kelly to learn more about the tempo offense. NE already runs a similar offense and as someone suggested it will come down to the play calling in my opinion.
I would say, if Belichick is signing Miami's cuts we should be smiling like clams because it's a great sign that our roster is coming alone. Remember we kept the better players! I like it, I like everything Miami did this off-season. I'll stick by this article... If Tannehill gets over the hump, Miami will be looking to kick some serious ass this year. How good we are will depend on the guy behind the center.

THIGGY might stick , if he doesn't get swooped off their PS, (cuz he does some things that NE likes to do) !!
How the heck is THIGGY eligible for the PS, hasn't he been an active player for 3 plus years??
That really caught me off guard, they must have seriously altered the PS eligibility rules!!

This , as Patrick just said, demonstrates Miami's roster strength. I like it.

But as you know, a train wreck sells better than the train being on time, LOL ; )) !!
While BB has been a Chip Kelly fan for some time, I'm sure that he asked him some questions that he's never asked him before (ie; Lazor) on this years occasion !!
NO-MATTER!!
Though we'll need to change-up our key words and hand signals to some extent, EXECUTION IS THE KEY !!!
GOFINS!!!
