Can Philbin and Tannehill Make Miami Relevant?

There is little debating, success in the NFL comes from the marriage of a head coach and QB. Given all things equal or close in the competition between Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill, the logical selection was the rookie. Joe Philbin is well aware of this coach - QB connection, just like Tony Sparano knew he was in trouble when Chad Henne proved incapable of being an NFL starter after Chad Pennington could not stay healthy.

Philbin also knows three years is probably all he has to show there is potential for greatness in Miami or he will follow Sparano’s footsteps out the door. It’s almost like this season is a free pass and Philbin knows, what he develops now will carry him later. Perhaps for these reasons, he made critical decisions now without worrying about the results this year.

Two plays… A missed 48 yard field goal and poor coverage on a fourth down 10-yard TD pass are the difference between 1-3 and 3-1. There were a lot of great plays leading up to the ultimate coup de grâce as the Dolphins jumped on their own swords and allowed the Jets and Cardinals to squeeze out victories. The silver lining is, Miami outplayed both teams and is poised to overcome the mistakes in route to a transformation every Dolphin fan can sense, if not yet see.

Some of the numbers do not equate to the confidence emanating from the Miami locker room, with a 66.4 passer rating, Ryan Tannehill is the 31st rated QB in the NFL. But the team has rallied around the rookie with the number 1 rated rushing defense, the top rated receiver and the 6th rated rusher. A closer look shows the numbers don’t lie and the confidence is justified. Miami is ranked 9th in total offense and 17th in total defense.

The rookie has only 2 TDs with 6 INTs and is still feeling his way in the NFL, but the optimism comes from Ryan Tannehill’s ability to recognize his mistakes and rapidly correct them. The best example of this is when the Houston Texans timed up his release and batted balls down like they were using ping pong paddles. Since then, Tannehill has had no significant reoccurrence and has found passing lanes with the help of his offensive line.

The common stat circling the media is the 306 yards passing Tannehill threw while under pressure against the Cardinals. The poise is there, but the attempt to rescue plays when the blocking scheme breaks down has led to compounding errors. If these issues are as rapidly assimilated and rectified as the batted balls, the wins will begin to accumulate.

The need for scoring will be paramount as offenses begin to attack Miami’s Achilles Heel in the secondary. Richard Marshall and Nolan Carroll have both spent more time in the training room this week than on the practice field. The number 1 rated rushing defense is a product of great play by the front seven, but also is an indication of teams exploiting Miami’s 30th rated pass defense.

Trading Vontae Davis may now seem like a mistake, but the voice of Mike Singletary lashing out at Vontae’s brother Vernon, reverberates in Joe Philbin’s decision. “I would rather play with 10 people and get penalized all the way until we've got to do something else. Rather than play with 11 when I know that right now, that person is not sold out to be a part of this team. It is more about them than it is about the team.”

“Cannot play with them… Cannot win with them… Cannot coach with them… Can't do it…”

Philbin made the decision, he could not coach Vontae. Davis may come round like his brother, but it was Singletary who paid the price and Philbin was not going to allow his team to be brought down before he had a chance to build it in his image. Teams will attempt to exploit the Miami secondary and there are not a lot of options for the Dolphins except perhaps to match scoring, until new bodies are acquired next season.

Without the poor example of Vontae Davis, Sean Smith finally had the breakout game Dolphin coaches have been waiting for. Smith will be tested for the remainder of the season and it will make him understand that games can be lost by getting beat on any single play. Smith could not celebrate a two interception performance when one missed coverage ultimately lost the cardinal game for Miami. This is an upside for the Dolphins, Smith was not reaching his potential and part of that was the backseat he had taken to the underachieving Vontae Davis.

The strategy this season must move toward a pressure defense, with press coverage on the corners and an assortment of blitz packages designed to force 3 step drops and create turnovers. The pressure must lead to QB hits and sacks, or there will be a potential for big plays. Points by the Dolphins also helps to make opposing offenses one dimensional, but unfortunately they will be forced to play into Miami’s weakness in the secondary. The Dolphins could be in-line for some shootouts.

The Dolphins are a work in progress, playing at high level for a coach and QB the team is rallying around. They are not ready for primetime, they are a few players away, but the expectations are always high in Miami. The joy may not come in victories for Dolphin fans as much as it will come from watching the growth of a rookie coach and a rookie QB as they begin the journey.

The feeling is definitely different than in past attempts, this is no Cam Cameron – Trent Green, Nick Saban – Daunte Culpepper or Tony Sparano – Chad Henne relationship, Philbin and Tannehil have the feel of something special. Fans have a front row seat to watch what could quite possibly be the return to prominence of the Miami Dolphins.

Buckle-up Fin Fans, this is going to be fun to watch…

The Dolphins are finally showing some smarts. I had hoped what we are seeing at this time is what would have happened 5 years ago. There is little use in talking about that.

Most teams talent wise are pretty equal, the defining difference is at the QB position. Having that QB/Coach combination is even better. The best coaches in the NFL have equally great QB play. It's not rocket science. Get the Coach/QB duo straighten out and the entire Franchise looks brilliant. Shoot even Jeff Ireland is looking better. :))
"" with the help of his OL "", while I've noticed him doing a lot of his own creating of passing lanes with similar to Danny little shuffles of his feet in one direction or another (as the defender whifffs), and/or with pump fakes of the ball in getting the DL to jump previous to the actual pass....Pretty much have to be able to that when you throw for more yardage (306) ""vs the blitz"" than any other NFL QB has since 2007 !!!

I think you're correct in suggesting that we'll be in some serious shootout's in o12, (also similar to the early days of 13 without any sort of D whatsoever), while I'd suggest that o12's excitement ( win or lose ) will come in our aggressive offensive play in trying to ""match the opponent's score for score"" as well as ""enjoying the growth of the rookie HC, QB"", and watching the entire team working their butts offf in such attempts to ""return the entire organization to prominence"" ...

This is indeed gonna be funn to watch, and hopefully it'll last for 17 or so years with three new shelves added to the Trophy Case !!!

Another supreme effort Patrick, VERY NICE !!! GOFINS!!
Always agreed with, and loved those Singletary quotes !!!
Ditto on the Singletary quotes, always liked him. Philbin isn't in over his head like Sparano was, there is much better coaching, dedication to practice and discipline that it shows. These players know if they aren't apart of the solution they are apart of the problem. The problems are being weeded out slowly and let go, our talented players are stepping up. Remember some of our starters played for us under Sparano and were handcuffed to a ancient system so how could they flourish. Sure we have room for improvement but Philbin and Tannehill will get us there.
I think we'll see PhiHill grow exponetially when the INT's disappear because all coaches hate turnovers (as do I) Tannehill's performance last week was very encouraging for our future, but the pick in OT was a killer, as I'm sue Ryan knows, he's a rookie and will grow under Philbins guidance. Go fins!!

First post since most won't go back to previous article, Patrick I get it. Its not that Jules stole the $1, The dollar it self is meaningless. The $1 he kept is already added into the $49 he owes but no where did it show the $2 he already paid back.

$49 (including $.50) + $49 (including $.50) +$2.00 he already paid = $100

Thank god for that long drive home from work last night. Stupid brain teasers.

Right... I used the word "stole" to segregate the $1.00 which was unaccounted for because Jules never contributed to the initial $100.00. You added it back to the $49.00 make those $49.50 each.

I think this one is more how every person's brain handles the numbers differently. It give us interesting insight on the fact that while we tend to believe we all think the same, everyone thinks slightly different and cannot ever know it is different because we only have our own mind as a frame of reference.

Nice thought Patrick, Kinda how we as fans differ in what we think are issues with out team. i.e. One might say Tannehill, Ranked 31st in NFL in active QB's with a 66.4 passer rating with 2 TD and 6 INTs is not a very good QB, but others who can break down the numbers and see the potential of that same person.

Good point Newengfinfan. And how many rookie QB's with 4 games under their belt have ever put up the kind of numbers Ryan did last weekend? It's one thing to be a young, learning QB with less than stellar statistics, but to show the kind of improvements from week to week Tannehill has and be able to play at such a high level like that has got to be encouraging and a concern to opposing defenses.

Now onto my thoughts of this article which is well writen. I have said for so many years that a team is all about the QB/Coach duo. And some of the problems that have plaqued our team, and thats the coming and goings of so many QB's and Coaches since the retirement of Shula and Marino. I've always thought that the 80's and 90's had some of the greatest combo's of QB/Coach duos that you don't see as much today. Brady/Belichick, Walsh/Montana, Jimmy Johnson/Aikman, Coughlin/Eli, Marv Levy/Jim Kelly, Shula/Marino, Bill Cowyers/Roethlisberger and the list goes on and on. I think our main concern here is whether we are all on board with giving both Philbin and Tannehill the chance. I know so many fans want results now (i'm one of them) and the fear is fans will be the ones that either run philbin or tannehill out of town before they've been given the chance.

Yeah, that's why I try to temper the negative with the positive. As you said, Tannehill's numbers are pretty abysmal which I wrote about in the last article, but the potential is also obvious. I think it's important to point out the shortcomings but to temper that with positives and the need for patience with the rookie coach and rookie QB.
The difference between last year and this year is palpable. As you mention in your excellent article the emotion between last year's 0-4 start and this year's 1-3 couldnt be greater. Toughness tells the tale and our front lines on both sides of the ball make me feel like we are in every play....much less every game. I am having a hard time gauging our progress via our opponents though. We crush Oakland who is then widely ridiculed as the worst team in the league and they come back and beat Pittsburgh. We give a game to the Jets, who supposedly are the media darlings , and they get crushed beyond recognition by the 49ers (tell me you didnt enjoy this game vicariously!!!) We then hand a game on a silver platter to an undefeated Cardinal team and they lay an egg against an unimpressive Rams team. The only consistent indicator is the Houston game, where they have done to everyone what they did to us....take the ball away and play like the best team in the league. Moral victories are great. progress is great. I am happy in my investment in season tickets for the Dolphins. However we have a big step to make to be ....as you say....."relevant". The resigning of our free agent cadre this year, the addition of a playmaking wide receiver and shutdown corner and safety, and the continuing maturation of the young players on the team ( Misi, Odrick, Thomas, Jerry, Martin, Tannenhill, Smith, et al are making Ireland look like a friggin GENIUS at this point!!!! Ireland Haters should start deciding how they want their words cooked so they can enjoy eating them!!!) I for one am encouraged. This week is also against a quality team that we should have a chance to defeat. Lets see what happens. For the first time in a few years I am looking forward to the challenge.

You know bigrey I was thinking that same thing this morning on my way to work when I heard the final of Thursday's game. How can we see were we stand as far as where this team is going when on one hand we lose to what we think is "elite" in Arizona just for them to lose to the Rams, or the Jets spanking against the 49ers? Makes one ask one self are we getting better by losing to these good teams, but giving them a run for their money, or are these teams just over rated and have only been lucky. I really think this answer will be answered when we play the 49ers or even the Patriots, whom a lot of folks think they are on the down hill slide but after what they gave to the Bills last week, I don't think they quit are yet.
Rey, I've been on the fence about Ireland... Sometimes I think he has done a great job and other times I think he has done poorly. I think the truth is, Sparano was not getting the most out of the talent on the team. We can see the same players performing at a higher level with the current staff. If Tannehill grows into a great QB, Ireland and Philbin will look like geniuses. The league truly is all about the QB.

There's just a sense with this group that something is different.

Everyone knows I'm no Ireland fan, but I do agree with P's statement about maybe Sparano didnt get much out of the talent that he had in front of him. My issue with Ireland is I just dont think he drafts very well, he said himself on HKs" we have 4s,5s,and 6s but no 1's,2's,or 3's" now at that time he was referring to WR's but unfortunately I think it pertains to just about every position on our team, hes drafted to get decent depth, but he doesnt get us that impact player that we so desperately need. I'm not going to bash him anymore until he does something that deserves it, right now I just want our Dolphins to win, and I believe we are on the right track to do that in a consistent manner.

Hummm, I think he drafts well and sucks at adding free agents... With Legadu gone, Richard Marshall is the only FA he was able to add this year that is making an impact and now he's hurt. Hell I don't even want to go into all the FA busts he's made. I'm glad they have said they want to draft and develop because Ireland sux in the FA market.

Jesus Buck, if you don't think he drafts well, then what exactly does he do well?
The best moves that Ireland has made are the ones he didn't make. Kyle Orton, Peyton Manning, and Matt Flynn. His acquisitions in FA are much worse than those 3 decisions, and his draft picks have not been much better until this year. Most of that success lays at the feet of Ryan Tannehill, and a new coaching staff that knew that Tannehill was the way to go.

As for me I still think Ireland is clueless, but he gets a break because he is smart enough to listen to his coaching staff more than his own convictions.

BuckeyeFinfan · 653 weeks ago

I think he sucks at FA also. And to answer your question I dont think he does anything very well. How can you think he drafts well? Name one Player in the last 5 years that he has drafted that makes you say WOW!!! And tell me who he has drafted other than this year because its too early to tell, who makes an impact on this team. I hope JP helps him in the WAR room, I'm not entirely sure that all the draft garbage was his idea, I think BP and TS had something to do with it. Like I said earlier, I'm not going to bash him anymore until he does something else that deserves it, but I will offer my opinion if the subject arises.

Well put BuckeyeFinFan. And it wouldn't surprise me if our new young QB starts making mediocre receivers look good. Same for some of our unknown talent, too. As Tannehill improves, so shall their potential. Success breeds success.

PRESENTLY, Of the (notable blues), I'd pursue Giant WR Victor Cruz, Steeler Mike Wallace, or Panther Steve Smith, with GB's Greg Jennings also as a possibility though he's beginning to fade at 31.. RB REGGIE BUSH, T JAKE LONG, Texan LB Connor Barwin (should'a took him instead of Pat White), Falcon CB Brent Grimes, and Pats S Patrick Chung ..

THANKS for that list CanAm !! I'm puttin it in the vault, and will soon be starting FA & Draft topics at the forums for those that are interested in getting a headstart while contributing their early input between Nov & Jan...

Already have quite a few draft prospects gathered form a conversation between THULU and Myself, while this list provided by you will help big time toward the FA thought gatherings !!!

Anyone know whos favored in this Sundays game, and what the point spread is? Also I know this is real early, but do we have an idea of what our cap looks like going into FA in the off season? Couple names on that list I'd love to see here but likes Kenny's list, I'm not sure we could afford them all

As of Tuesday evening, The Bengals are a 4 1/2 point favorite over Miami.
The guy who knows where the DOLLAR's go suggest that we'll have gazillions of cap o13 cap space..

Still not enough for all those listed fella's, but good enough for a couple to a few if so inclined..
I didn't bother at this stage to look at any of the names other the highly notables...

Unfortunately, rather that goin after the obvious notables that would immediately contribute to the team, and who've already made a name for some other previous Scout or GM, Ireland prefers to search for diamond in the ruff type projects so he can make his own name !!!

IMHO, FA is for instant result satisfaction, and the late part of the draft ( round 5 - UDFA ) is for diamond in the ruff type projects...

I'm with you about the instant results for FA players. I heard that the Dolphins have about 50 million for FA, but much of that money will be spent on some of our own 18 FAs. They are talking to Hartline's agent as we speak. The one big decision will be what to do about Jake Long. He commands big money at this time, but I don't see him getting another contract like his first one this time around.

The dolphins have given up 8 sacks to date, 4 of them by Jake Long. He makes about 10 million dollars this year. You tell me if he is worth that much money.
Not at the current pace he's setting.. Even if he cleans it up and goes from averaging 1 sack per game to one sack per two games and ended up with 8 to 10 sacks allowed, it'd be an clear indication that his injuries have taken their toll!! He needs to allow 3 at most the rest of the way, if not throw a shutout to be deemed worthy of what he'll be demanding...

Could probably get Denver's Ryan Clady or KC's Brandon Albert for a lot less than Long will demand ... Clady and Albert have both been LT starters for their entire careers while being from the same draft class as Jake while also being younger than Jake, and less injury prone ...
One of the reasons I turned against TS was because he played his starters in the last pre season game 2 years ago. That is the game that Long hurt his knee, and he has never been the same since. It was so stupid to be playing his best players in that meaningless game. It showed me Sparano mentality and that was the end of him for me.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO , HERE WE GO ORIOLES HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO ORIOLES HERE WE GO, WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEVENTEEN STRAIGHT YEARS of 25 plus games under 500., and TONIGHT THEY PLAY FOR THE FINAL WILDCARD SPOT, while just missing by ONE GAME the dethroning the yankees for the AL East Division !!!

I like the point you make about Miami perhaps being ranked #1 against the run because most teams have been successful passing against. (Not to discredit the accomplishment that having such a god run defense is). The only catch to this thinking is when we force a high powered running team with an average passing attack to pass and become one dimensional because they can't run the ball. (This has happened several times so far this season). Miami has been thrown against more than most teams in the league. But it is also a result of gaining (and blowing ) leads in a couple of games.
If Miami stays the course and our secondary continues to improve while the run defense remains strong, we will wind up more in the middle of the pack where pass defense is concerned. This coupled to a pass rush that applies more and more pressure and sacks, our defense will be able to keep us in games.
In any event, I like what I'm seeing so far. It beats the devil out of that dismal start we had against New England last year where they racked up over 500 yards passing on us. That game along kept us hovering among the bottom 10 in pass defense all year, though we gradually did improve by years end.
