Ryan Tannehill Falls Short of Rookie Record as Miami Dolphins Lose in Overtime

Miami Dolphins rookie QB Ryan Tannehill threw for a career-high 431 passing yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs as the Dolphins fell to the Arizona Cardinals 21-24 in overtime.

Tannehill was one yard short of tying the rookie QB record of most passing yards of 432 set by Cam Newton last season. Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline set a Dolphins franchise record with 253 receiving yards and a touchdown. The previous record was held by Chris Chambers with 238 yards.

I have long been a doubter of Brian Hartline, and I have no choice but to take back everything that I have ever said about him. He was everywhere, and you have to believe that he is helping Ryan Tannehill's development tremendously. Hartline now leads the NFL in receiving yards, and I'm pretty sure that he's up near the top in receptions, too.

Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter missed yet another field goal this week. No, we can't pin this entire loss on him, but that field goal turned out to be crucial because both teams were tied at the end of regulation. We cannot afford to continue missing field goals like this, which is why I think it's time that we get rid of Carpenter (if we can find an adequate replacement, of course). He was a big reason Miami lost in two straight games, and if he had just done his job who knows what position the Dolphins would be in right now.

Miami's defensive line didn't have any problems getting pressure this week. They sacked Kevin Kolb 8 times on Sunday. Cameron Wake had 4.5 sacks after not getting a single sack through the first three weeks. I think we can safely say that Wake isn't having any troubles this year. I actually predicted that Wake would get a minimum of two sacks on twitter, but I didn't see this coming. Wake was incredibly dominant, and the pressure he got was extremely helpful on defense. We didn't get the win this week, but if Wake and the rest of the Dolphins defensive line is able to play close to that level then we should be fine.

Turnovers hurt the Dolphins this week. Tannehill threw two picks and lost a fumble. His first one can be chalked up as Brian Hartline's fault. Hartline slipped and the ball went right into the defender's hands. I know I talked Brian Hartline up earlier, but I do have to say this. I've noticed that Hartline tends to slip an abnormal amount of times when he is on a comeback route. I'm not saying that he's a bad receiver, because obviously he's a pretty darn good one. I'm just saying that he needs to work on it. Tannehill's other interception was in overtime, and he was being hit as he threw the ball. I won't give him much fault for that one either.

Legedu freaking Naanee finally got his first catch of the season, but wouldn't you know he fumbled it as soon as he gained possession and the Cardinals returned it to Miami's three yard line. Thankfully Sean Smith was able to come up with the interception after getting away with a pass interference no-call. Naanee has been an extreme disappointment, and I can't help but think his time in Miami will come to a close after this season (maybe sooner).

This is the second week where I felt like the Dolphins were the better team in a losing effort. Turnovers and the missed FG were really what bit us in the butt in the end.

I am extremely encouraged by the young Ryan Tannehill's performance. He was dangerous this week, and you can really see that how much he is developing. I think that I might go back and watch him in the Texans game just to see how different he looks now compared to then. The more I watch the more I'm convinced that he is finally the quarterback we've been yearning for all this time.

Paul, these games are rough... Beat them up and not put them away. Tannehill looked good, but there is still a ways to go. Taking the sack instead of throwing the ball up for grabs might have been the difference. He basically gave the game away with that decision. I know Carpenter will bare the cross, but Tannehill needs to win these games if he is ever going to be the considered a great QB. I'm not being down on him, I think it will take a couple years, but winning these games is what I personally use as a indicator of whether a QB will reach the next level. Winners win... Losers lose... Stats, moments of brilliance, mean little when the outcome does not leave the team on the proper side of the result.

Good summary of the game Paul. I agree with pretty much, everything you say.You can't help but get the impression that this is a different Dolphin team than what we have seen in recent years. Look how many years back you have to go to find another rookie quarterback performance like yesterday's. When you have to make comparisons to Dan Marino you know you got something good.

Tannehill may have another breakout performance or two this year against a team that doesn't have as good a defense or is on the rise like the Cardinals. I Like how you refer to Ryan as our, " young quarterback" but I understand that is just a descriptive term. (Right, you young whipper snapper, you)?

In any event, Miami is becoming a much more exciting team to watch. With continued improvement, we will win more of these close games than lose them. I think the Dolphins are serving notice to the rest of the NFL that they better not consider us a door mat anymore. We have a good defense and can run and shoot with the best of them.

But like Patrick said, we have to find a way to win these tight contests. That' is a good measure in determining whether we have a good or a great QB.

I'm off to go check the NFL stats to see how we fare against the Bengals now. later folks.

I was curious to see if anyone would say anything about it. Glad you noticed Tony. I may be young, but Tannehill is still young compared to his peers, so I felt like it would be fun to throw in.

LMAO Paul. You may be young my good man, but you write and carry yourself considerably older. I just thought it was funny coming from you to speak of his youth in the league like you did.
I had an old Italian Grandmother that put it best. (In Italian, mind you). The English translation....When the piss laughs at the chitta. (So to speak). Um.....not to say that is how I think of you. It's just humorous to see one so young mentioning another one's lack of experience/maturity. That's all.
So I guess that means I'm piss to you now, huh? Sorry to hear that Tony

Tell me you are kidding, Paul? You aren't piss and I certainly hope you aren't pissed about it, too.
Not at all Tony. Just having some fun.

Before the game started, on the chat, I said we needed to do 2 things to win: win the turnover battle, which we lost, and keep RT on his feet, which we did a decent job of. We dont have enough talent like the Eagles do, where we can turn the ball over multiple times and get away with it.(the Eagles lead the league in turnovers and are still 3-1). Hartlines slip was costly but not near as much as Naanees fumble, that would have been a first down and on the way to another score. RT's 2nd int was his fault, throw it out of bounds or eat it, dont try to make a play with the defender in your face. The OL played better, but still not great, but they are improving I think. Harline and Bess both played great games, I just wish we had more talent at WR to go with them, we need someone the other team is scared of, Hartline or Bess will never be that guy. I hate to say that I'm encouraged by losses, but we are playing well, we just dot know how to win yet, hopefully we learn that soon.

I believe our coaching staff has that killer instinct considering that 4th down play they went for. They have made some gutsy calls so far. I also thought we demonstrated it in the Oakland Game, too. It appears to me that we are scoring more in the 4th quarter this year. I think it will eventually filter down to Tannehill.

Jules I heard that a couple of months ago and asked on here if anyone else had heard it, and someone, Kv I think, said Ross made a public statement saying he would NEVER move the team. I'm not exactly sure who made the reply, and I sure hope that wasnt Ross just trying to do some kind of damage control and just saying what he thinks the public wants to hear.

Oh wow. That would be great to have the Dolphins in LA. They would be a lot closer to me then. I'd move back to the LA area so I could go see them play again after 44 years.
Just kidding Jules. They wouldn't be the same team if they were called the LA Dolphins.
No chance at all. It's a stupid rumor probably brought up by a site just looking for clicks.

Stephen Ross owns Sun Life stadium, so he'd lose a lot of money if he moved the team to LA. Don't you worry Lou. It's not happening.

Good point Paul, it wouldnt make much sense to have a roughly $400,000,000 stadium sit empty with nothing to put in it.
Consider this. Ross paid over 1 Billion dollars for the Dolphins that are entrenched in the community. He owns a 4 million dollar stadium lock stock and barrel. Who in their right mind would think he would move the team, when most of his profit is generated from TV revenue, and not ticket sales. Does moving the team sound like a good idea ?

Not only that, but 2 NFL teams have left the LA market in the past. The Dolphins are not the only team with empty stadiums, it is happening all around the Country. The people that say those things just want to see their names in the media.
Very Nice writeup Paul !!

HOWEVER..
"" Hartline has to work on his not slipping "" TOOOFUNNY!!
Every patch of grass is different, slipping can't be controlled (for the most part) !!

1st and goal at the 3 yard line, Sean Smith is allowed to touch and/or push the WR within the 1st 5 yards of the LOS as long as it's done before the ball is in the air which was the case in this instance.. (NO-MATTER wasn't called, SS INT and a GREAT ONE at that) !! While we definately had a blatant pass interference call not called in our favor in the EZ when we had the ball, (so it evens out, even if SS was guilty)!!

P ..
"" Stats, moments of brilliance, mean little when the outcome does not leave the team on the proper side of the result. ""

Means a TONNNN to a team at our embryoinic stage of growth !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What happened to being patient ?? Doesn't seem that one's practicing what he's preaching IMHO !! Coaches, QB and team are maturing well together a full year ahead of what all the experts prescribed and/or they are wayy ahead of what any reasonable fan could have hoped for !!

In reality, we should be going threw in o13 what we're going threw right now in o12 a full year behind the schedule we're currently on, so this years mistakes will be a thing of the past in o13 !! EXCITING Miami Dolphin Football, win or lose, and the W's will soon become a regularity this year, while we're gonna be more than ready to take on the pats for o13's AFC East division, which doesn't mean that it's out of the question this year !!

Impressive Wins are on the horizon without the INT's (of which neither was the fault of the QB), blatant fumbles without the D forcing them ( NaaNee ) , and missed FG's (Carpenter 3 of his last 6) while he just barely made the two short ones yesterday!!

The opposing teams kickers are making the same distance FG's and winning the games that Carpenter is missing while being a prominent assistant to our losses !!

Checkout the play by play where I emboldened some of the spectacular plays, and there were a bunch of them!! http://dolphin-shout-forum.2299088.n4.nabble.com/...

Glad you like it Kenny. I have noticed that Hartline slips more than any other receiver. Trust me on this one. He needs to work on it.

I do agree with you about the fact that moments of brilliance meaning a ton so early on in the development. It's incredibly encouraging seeing what the rookie QB has done and how much he's developed already.
He's the talk of the entire league right noww, ALL THE EXPERTS ARE AMAZED WITH RYAN TanneTHRILL , and our MIAMI DOLPHINS : ) !!
P.S. Paul, NOW you can write the story you wrote last week about how we've seen the best day that B Hartline will ever have, and it'll be absolute fact (yardage wise), GIGGGITTTY, GIGGGITTTY : ) !! WOWWW, what a day for my boyz, Sean Smith (been tellin ya'all since we got him "" he's the sheiite "" , Brian Hartline (GREAT ROUTE RUNNER, track star speed/can get deep), and MY GUY since Barkley bowed-out Ryan TanneTHRILL!!

Not to mention the Sunday earth CWAKE in Arizona, YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAA BABBBBBBYYYYYYY !!!

GOFINS!!

First I'm holding no blame of Carpenter, since he missed another field goal. Problem is the team needs to play 60 minutes of football not 55 minutes. Turn overs have been our killer. As noted our only win Tannehill threw zero INT in that win, again, like the other two loses this year, this was Miami's game that we just let slip away.

I can assure you that it wasn't in any way intended to insult Tannehill. I loved it.
I am not sure why everybody is down today. Hey man yeah this team lost and that sucks but look at the future here. Ryan Tannehill is starting to show what he can do. It is just a matter of time. Yes they should be winning some of these close games but look on how this team has gone from week one to week four.

I am excited, they play 16 games we have only played four. Just a matter of time. Plus if Reggie Bush wasn't playing like he was hurt there would have been a different result. This team is getting close to becoming great again, the defense exploded yesterday and the offense did to they came up short they have a great chance to attack Cincy I think they can do it.

Thorny, Wish I could be as excited as you but I'm still not sold on Tannehill quit yet. Yes he had an excellent game as far as yards goes, but two turn overs and one fumble is what cost us this game. Of course I did not watch the game live but watched the little football move down the field on my computer. I know alot of folks are on Carpenter for all his missed field goals but I think his miss in this game was a 51 yarder which is not always a guarantee for any kicker in this league. I guess the way I look at things are different then others, and that is I expect my team to win each week.
One of Tannehill's interceptions was on Hartline because he slipped in a comeback route. The other interception was because he was hit when he threw the ball and it dropped right into the defender's hands. The fumble was caused by a great jump by the Cardinals defender who was unblocked and hit Tannehill almost as soon as he got the ball.

You know we have a link up to watch the game live online right? You should check it out.
