The No-Names Return for the Miami Dolphins

The 3-3 Miami Dolphins are a 500 team for the first time since December 19, 2010. The Dolphins were 7-7 prior to finishing the 2010 season 7-9 and beginning 2011 with seven straight losses. Three consecutive losing seasons has left Miami out of contention for the playoffs and completely overlooked by the media. When picking teams during the pregame self-aggrandized four-letter network show, the Dolphins are not mentioned, as if the entire season is a continuous bye.

The fastest three minutes in football is void of Miami’s existence and when choosing the officials to call the games, the crew with the worst grade is sent to Miami. Even dregs like Solomon Wilcox commentate the games. There’s no pretty boy Brady or Sexy Rexy and his lap dog Tim Tebow, no Payton Manning or Drew Brees, no fancy monikered RG3s, not even a dog-fighting financier or a Ray Lewis walking away from murder. Miami simply gets no love...

These are the no-name Dolphins.

The team has fought their way to an even record prior to the bye week and the NFL is completely unaware of it. The Dolphins are in a four-way tie atop the AFC East, but their name is at the bottom of the list. There’s no logic, there’s no alphabetical sequence, there’s no statistical basis, and it’s as if an editor threw them in because the writer forgot they were in the division.

When rookie QB Ryan Tannehill won two of his first five games and threw for 1,200 yards, the stat didn’t appear until it was used a week later to describe Andrew Luck. No one in the league knows who Brian Hartline is except perhaps the fact that he is white makes him stand out like a smile in a room full of darkness. Reggie Bush is the only name on the team after the trades of Brandon Marshall and Vontae Davis and most NFL fans outside of Miami thought he retired when he gave back his Heisman Trophy.

These are the no-name Dolphins.

Here’s a message to the NFL, the Miami Dolphins are taking it personal, they aren’t flying under the radar, they are flying straight into it like a stealth bomber ready to ruin some team’s day. The reason for the team’s recent success is exactly what the media does not see; there are no darlings in Miami. The Dolphins do not need a star or a sideshow because this is a team. Losing Marshall and Davis did not hurt; it elevated the play of the rest of the team because they know the team is greater than any individual.

The Dolphins have a bye week to rest and by the time they take the field again on October 28th in New York, the hype machine will be in full force as the calamity Jets take the field. For Miami, it will be a pivotal game. The Dolphins have not had a winning record since November 28, 2010 and to accomplish it against the rival Jets, would bring back some life to a fading Miami fan-base.

The Dolphins need Ryan Tannehill to continue on his current path toward franchise quarterback status. They need some help at WR and perhaps after the bye, Jabar Gaffney will be ready to play. Reggie Bush, Jake Long and Rickard Marshall will have time to heal. The media will all be riding on the Jets and Miami will sneak up and drop a bomb on the parade. A win in New York will place Miami back on the map. It will take much longer to gain national respect, but the signs are positive.

These are the no-name Dolphins.

After two overtime losses and constant questions on whether Miami knew how to win football games, two straight close wins, put an end to that notion. To level the playing field, The Rams lost because of their kicker was on the short end of the kick this time. The officiating will even out as well if the Dolphins continue to win and begin to play against teams with national relevance.

Take a breath this week, but buckle up from then on Miami fans. The stealth Dolphins are coming and many unfortunate teams are going to be caught wondering how they lost to a team of unknown's. It all starts in New York by beating the hated Jets. Miami will rise again...

Good article Patrick. I think we'll have a winning season and surprise a few teams. I like what Coach Philbin has accomplished and his style of Leadership. We should be 5-1 right now but we are definitely headed in the right direction.
tommyd, I agree with you. Philbin took some heat for his disciplinarian style, not putting up with the nonesense with Chad. Maybe getting rid of all that distraction, with the off field troubles of Marshall was a positive thing. I like the fact they're playing as a team. They just need that running game going again, I believe they should give Miller some carries along with Bush. I believe Miller has the potential to take it to the house at anytime within a ball game, just as much as Bush.

Great article Patrick. As you know me and Jules were talking about all the media avoiding us 100% and it was really P'ng me off. But gotta say after reading your article, I say screw them all. Let our no name team do the talking for us. At least I can drive to work, or the store or where ever in Maine with my huge Dolphins logo plasted on my back window of my truck and not have to worry about a bunch of idiotic patriot fans saying something. To be frank its pretty gloom here with all these Patsy fans scratching there heads wondering what has gone wrong. I love it.....

Paul, I made a comment to Bill at the Nation telling him yesterday that the Nations and Shout should start writing articles for the sports media so we might get some limelight. He said it would be a good idea but he said you needed to answer your phone first.
1 reply · active 651 weeks ago
He was talking about calling Fox Sports and ESPN and them not answering, not me. That would be a fun idea, though.
Good article Paul, I don't even watch that four-letter network show anymore, I usually tune in to the NFL net. when I watch a pregame show, they're better than that four-letter network show at spreading the love, but they too love their NY's, NE Bradys and the Denver Mannings, Danny boy usually finds a way to get us some pub on his show. I'm not sure about the officiating crew comment, sounds kinda conspiracy theoryish to me, but if we do get the worst crews, both teams that day play with the worst crew. I do know one thing, respect is earned, not given, and this Dolphin team is only in the beginning stages of earning that respect, they need to get the respect of the fan base 1st before they can expect it nationally,(no more picketing the HQ's) also the 2 blown games didn't help so that respect may not come this year, but if we get some playmakers around young Tannehill, beef up the OL and get some game changers on D in the pass rush and saftey positions, we will get our due. Remember, the dolphins have been very bad/ disfunctional in all aspects of the organization for a long time now, they need to EARN back respect.

Patrick wrote the article.
As much as I would love to take the credit, it was Patrick. I have an article scheduled for early tomorrow morning. So you won't have to wait to long to say good article again (I hope).
I'm looking forward to it Paul! Thanks for the props everyone! It's a little over the top to claim we are getting the worst refs, I actually have no idea, but it sure seems that way. I don't think the NFL consciously has an agenda, but I do think that it is a natural phenomenon for the officials to lean toward the team or player that is supposed to be better. It's like Michael Jordan getting all the foul calls, the officials don't go into the game with the intention of giving Jordan the calls, but they are more focused on Jordan when he has the ball then say, Will Purdue. Sam Bradford is more apt to get a tuck rule call than Ryan Tannehill, it's the nature of our sports, people love the front runner. They love success, they also love to see it come crashing down, but that's a different subject.
Oh yeah, sorry Patrick.
What is really interesting to me is how true this article is. I feel the same way and wonder how many people are eating crow like Channing Crowder and others that do not like Miami. Finally we have a good product not great just yet.

Before the start of the season we all were not sure what to expect. Miami in the eyes of the media was doomed and were writing stories about Dansby and Bush getting a raw deal for starting Tannehill over Moore and Gerrard. Well this team is proving everybody wrong.

like many here I am tired of hearing how great Brady is, what's wrong with Dallas, Drew Brees upset, Gang Green and the wild cat with Tebow etc. Soon the Media will have to pay attention to this team but I caution this will not happen unless this team continues to progress. Quietly this team is getting better

Show me. Beat the JETS. OCT 28th.
Alllright Miami.

I agree Tator! The Jets game is vital for Miami, for both teams really... A victory in New York could change the entire season and loss will shut down any hope. I do not like to place any single game higher on the priority list, but this one is sure up there. It's the Jets game, so there is no looking ahead. Let's go No Names!

Its funny that you say the Jets game. I've kind of hung my hat on, either one of the Patriot games or the 49ers game. If the Dolphins could beat anyone of these teams or even both, just think of the headlines then. Folks would really have to start taking this team serious.

Great post Patrick. No names we may be but I think our time is on hand. If we can march into NY and beat the jets I think the media might start to take us for real. This game will be a tough one and if we lose it will push us back but we still have alot of season ahead so lets not put all our hopes on this one game. It is not a do or die. I think our chances are good to win and I really look forward to Ryan saying we are a tough team.(only because he will have to choke that out)
That RT is outstanding is with out question and he really has erased my doubts.
Hey Shawn :-)))))))

Hi Miss Polly how are you and your family doing? :))))))
Well Patrick you riled up the natives that's for sure. I love it.

I am not a conspiracy theorist. I must how ever point out the obvious. Think back to the tuck game, then the knee injury to Brady, and spygate. Had anyone every heard of the "tuck rule" until that play occured in the play offs against the Raiders ? The knee injury to Brady changed the way the DL go after the QB because of the Brady rule. I won't even mention the burning of tapes in the spygate scandal. I wouldn't call any of that a conspiracy, but at the same you not convince me that the playing field is equal. It easily tilts in the favor of the teams on top of the mountain.

I must admit it does give us the fans something to talk about. For the players that "favoritism" is one more thing they must fight through. Bad calls happen all the time, they seldom change the results of games. Players and coaching staffs change the games.

Earlier in the year Patrick was saying one of our biggest weapons would be catching teams off-guard, and sleeping on us. Our 0 and 4 pre season record reinforced that the Dolphins were the same old team they have been for years. No threat for the big dogs on the block. Or so they thought.

As Patrick so well pointed out. Things are changing down here in Miami folks and more sooner than later the Dolphins are going to be a team to reckon with.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here Gary. The Packers, who would be considered a team on top of the mountain, had a game taken away from them this year because of referees.

I personally don't think that the NFL tries to influence who wins games. There are bad calls out there, but that happens. Nothing we can do about it.
I'm with you on the bad calls Paul, but totally ignoring that top teams don't get more of the calls to go their way is short sighted on our part.

Paul, on the same not the original refs were not at that game nor were they at the game were Bill Bellick questioned the field goal at the end of the game which appeared to the viewers as going left of the upper pole. My question is the normal officials lean more towards these upper teams the the replacements did. Brady got the snot knocked out of him and no flags were thrown by replacements. Just saying.
Miami right now is exceeding the media's expectations and that of the FIRELAND COMMITTEE. This team is coming together and Tannehill is part of the reason why along with Philbin's approach. I am surprised at Tannehill's quick evolution but he is showing that he is the truth.

The biggest question I have for the public is after going into the bye at 3-3 is HOW DOES IRELAND LOOK NOW?????

I'm not going to be as aggressive as you, but I am curious to see what the fan sentiment is of Ireland now.

I'm still not a JI fan, but as I said a week or so ago, I wont bash him anymore until he does something stupid to deserve it. But on that same token, I'm not gong to sing his praises either.
Buckeye that's what I like about you we can agree to disagree:) Oh by the way all the best to you on this weekend's fantasy match up against me.

Thats right Shawn, a little disagreement never hurts anyone. You're catching me on the right weekend Shawn, half my team is on bye this week. Good Luck to you too my friend.
It's Patrick and his style of writing :)) LOL!!!
I read a stat and it is in an article I wrote on the Shout a long while back that shows a %50 hit rate on draft picks is average. I think Ireland has done well in the draft, I do not think he does well in FA. One reason, particularly this year, was the lack of cap space, but the truth is, no QB or coach has ever won the SB with two different teams. Now I know RiverdoG is going to throw out some mumbo jumbo about there not being a large enough sample for that to be a valid point but I disagree. Teams that build through the draft typically have better sustained success than teams that bring in the FAs. So Ireland has filled slots with marginal FAs while drafting the players he likes. The process of doing this at a %50 success rate should take about 7 years. So I'll defend Ireland even though at times in the past I have crucified him.

Patrick I agree with most of your statement. Although Ireland has proved some what of himself for being worthy, the guy is just not likable. I am confused with this guy especially being in management however if Ireland has produced a good product who really is going to care, in other words as long as the Fins keep winning nobody is going to pay too much attention to ireland. IMHO.

In respect with building through the draft I 100% stand with you. So many time when Marino was our QB the team tried to bring in FA's with no success. For Example does anybody remember the name of the Rb Miami got from Denver who had fumblitus.?????? It is the same guy who fumbled at the one yard line against Buffalo and they went 99 yards for a TD??? I can't remember his name but my point is he was a bust. I say build through the draft.

My question to everyone is this, How about them Dolphins?
Whoa, I guess I must be a geek! His name was Bobby Humphrey...
Guess who Miami traded for him? The infamous Sammy Smith!

Patrick I would have to ask this question, "50% do what? make the team or have an impact?" JI is terrible in both regards, FA and getting IMPACT players thru the draft, you and I had this conversation last week, he drafts OK for getting depth with average players but he doesnt get us studs to make us better. As far as this year I think he did OK, right now RT is the only true difference maker that we drafted though, others are contributing, but I wouldnt say they are difference makers.
I have to wonder though, if part of that was schematic... I mean the Sparano/Parcells model was 3 yards and cloud of dust. It's hard to find dynamic play makers when your sights are set so low based on the scheme.
Mumbo Jumbo ??? :))

I have done an unofficial unproven statical study. My simple calculations have broken down what the chances are of a head coach winning the Super Bowl beginning in the Super Bowl era. That very quick calculation has revealed that the chances of any NFL head coach winning the Super Bowl is less than 5/10ths of one percent.

Even though Patrick claims are correct about a HC never repeating as a Super Bowl HC with another franchise. I don't believe the reason behind that not happening is because time has passed him by. I feel it's simply the law of averages are against any HC winning a Super Bowl.

Some HC is going to win the Super Bowl. Thinking it will be a repeating coach is no sure thing. It's a little like playing roulette. No matter how many times the little ball lands on red, there is no guarantee that the ball will land on a black number on the next spin.

There is nothing Mumbo Jumbo about my unperfect, unproven, home grown statical study. :)) Can someone please tell what subject we were talking about ? LOL

WOW, a positive quote from an ESPN analyst "Chris Berman (ESPN, 20) - Tannehill is the real deal". the number 20 depicts his power ranking for the dolphins
Berman will never forgive the Dolphins for beating his beloved Bills 20 times in a row!
I came across the NFL's officially recommended transcripts that they form lettered to all the highlight broadcasting stations..

It reads like this word for word ; ) !!

THAT group of people which resides at the most SOUTH-eastern tip of America has IT as their quarterback, WHO is the wide receiver, WHERE is the free safety, and WHY WHY WHY is the kicker, while the only Dolphin highlight allowed will be that of the coin toss !! Yours Truly, The NORTH-eastern Based NFL !!

Ahhhhhh a wise ass ehhhhh, OHHHH WAITTT, that's the 3 stooges, LOL : ) !!
Hey for those who can't stand Ireland, The Browns have been bought and Holmgren has been replaced!!
He may retire, but (if not) he may also be an option to think about for those that are anti-Ireland..

Holmgren has proved that hes a better coach than he is a GM. If those are my only two choices I stay with JI. (did I say that out loud)
I personally like Ireland as GM, (think that up to now he's been given a raw deal)!! However I don't like him as the speaker for our team so if Philbin does our talkin, I'm more than fine with Ireland at GM, though I do tease about him just to make you guys laugh, I think he's a good GM that can't get nothing but better as he's still it bit raw himself at the position, JMHO : ) !!

For those that are still anti-Ireland..
Supposedly GM Tom Heckert is out of Cleveland tooo, yesterday it said he'd likely be retained but today it says he's likely out also..

I have said recently that I'm not going to bash JI any more until he does something to deserve it, I too think he had his hands some what tied when BP and TS were here, they ran an out of date system that had no chance of working in todays NFL. So on that note I will give him another year to prove himself to me, but I must be honest, I'm not thrilled with what he did in this years draft as a whole, he got a piece or two, but I think he left a lot of pie sitting on the table. Again, this is just my opinion.

Now this is what I want to hear, Patrick. It doesn't have to be chock full of statistical facts, all designed to make a point. Just a good old fashioned, "gut feeling".
It sure looks like the Dolphins are heading towards national prominence. But I just assume the Media takes their time learning how to spell Miami correctly. In bold print, none the less. The more teams we surprise, the better.
