How Big Of An Impact Will Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan Make?

The Miami Dolphins had one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL last year.

So, obviously, something had to be done. And, that something was firing defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni and hiring Mike Nolan as their new defensive coordinator.

Nolan is a great coach that can make a huge impact on the Dolphins defense. He has had a great career so far with 25+ years of coaching experience, and that includes the top defense in the NFL with the 1993 New York Giants. Here is a quick look at what Nolan has done with defenses in his career:

Nolan has been a defensive coordinator for eleven years.

Eight of those eleven years, Nolan's defense has been in the better half of the NFL in points allowed. Six of the years, it has been in the top 10. So, that means Nolan has had a top 10 defense in the NFL for the majority of his career. That is a very good sign for Dolphins fans.

Mike Nolan is the best acquisition the Miami Dolphins made this offseason. Better than Brandon Marshall. Defense wins championships, and while great receivers helps a lot, they still don't help as much as a great defense.

Let me know what the Dolphins community thinks on that one with your comments right below this post.

  2. I think Nolan was the last choice DC. He may wind up being the best choice time will tell. One thing though, even with the explosion of offense in the past few years Defense is the name of the game. I know it's boring to watch but the Dolphins are doing what they can to be a smash mouth team.

They are getting there and if the new guys on defense are any good at all. The defense will gel in a hurry. defenses always seem to able to put things together quicker than offenses.

  3. @River: Who would Miami have hired if not Nolan?
@anonymous: yep, Nolan is what will change this team the most.

  6. Shoot Paul I don't know who they would have went after if Nolan turned them down. I was just saying Mike was not their first choice, he was who they settled on.

Early on in the search, there was a DC they wanted and he turned them down. I wish I could remember his name. He was the guy I wanted to see down here but it didn't happen. After him they went the Giants DC and a few others before Nolan.

Nolan doesn't get me pumped up. He may turn out to be great, I hope so.. He seems to do a great job when he has the material to work with, but thid defense has a ton of holes to fill and things to fix, and a bunch of unknowns to fill them. That said I the defense will be improved, it wouldn't take much to do that.

With all the newbes with this team, I look for a bumpy road ahead for the coming year. This brings me to the word IF. Watch for IF to be subject matter for dicussion in a day or so..

  7. Rivedog, Nolan wasnt the last choice for the Phins, sure they were looking at different options but once they realized that Nolan might be avaliable they went after him. He was still with the Broncos, but believe me, if he was a free agent then he would of been the first choice for the Dolphins. Hell, almost every team in the NFL would of went after Nolan hard had they known that he was avaliable. They didnt settle, they just got lucky, and im glad that the other DC's turned down the Dolphins.

Really? A ton of holes to fill? Where exactly are these holes? FS is, I admit, a problem. CBs, covered. Vontae, Smith, and Allen are all great corners, with 1 or 2 good sleepers competing with them for the positions. LB's, other than the mishandling of JT, upgraded. Getting rid of Porter and giving more time to Wake are both big ups in my book. D-Line, a wokr in progress. We've got good competition at the ends, I really think we should go with more of a 4-3 look. Nolan bringing his hybrid D in to town will help with that though. The jury is still out on any of the current roster playing well at NT with fergy out, but he will be back and fresh after week 8 and we'll have his presence in the middle if we need it at that point for the final stretch.
