Miami Dolphins Implode on National TV

Debacle is a mild word for this abysmal performance…

40-0

Let me type that again: 40-0

There it is. How much more can be said without getting sucked into the same vortex that sank the Miami Dolphins? What is it with the Ravens? It seems Miami always saves the worst for Baltimore, but it was more than that, the Dolphins were exposed.

An article earlier this week explained Miami’s O-Line deficiency when facing a 3-4 defense, it was starkly apparent on Thursday night. Mike Pouncey cannot block big strong nose tackles one-on-one and consequently, he needs help. The moment one of the guards slides over to help Pouncey, the “A” gap opens like a can of Busch Beer. Free running blitzers attacked Matt Moore or Jay Ajayi with the same whooshing sound.

It may have been the sound of the air coming out of Miami’s season…

Mike Pouncey might be a really good technician. He
might be really good at making line calls. He might be really good at sealing a zone, but he cannot block one-on-one. Was Adam Gase making a case to explain to himself why Miami needs a better center? Gase called the same running play into the “A” gap on first down, after first down, after first down. I know all the experts proclaim Pouncey as the best Miami offensive lineman. I guess I’m just too stupid to know I’m too stupid and Pouncey is really good.

As casual fans, we’re not capable of understanding the subtle nuances. I’m sure Adam Gase will proclaim Mike Pouncey played, “an outstanding game last night.” Sorry Adam, Pouncey was pathetic. I know,
I’m just too stupid to know I’m too stupid.

These excuses, intangibles or nuances we fans don't understand will mean nothing to next nine teams the Miami Dolphins play. As Gase is fond of saying, “The film don’t lie.” Every team playing Miami will sign a couple 350 pound nose tackles to attack the weakness, Mike Pouncey.

Was this a pre-season game? It certainly seemed as if Gase was working off a play sheet with only 3 plays. Ajayi into the middle of the line, Ajayi into the middle of the line, Ajayi into the middle of the line. By the time Matt Moore dropped back to pass, the entire stadium was pinning their ears back and whooshing through the “A” gap. Damien Williams couldn’t decide which free runner to block and just whiffed on them all.

Miami had no answer to the Ravens. Zone blocking doesn’t work against a 3-4 defense with three large defensive tackles coming straight ahead and blitzing LBs swarming behind. Adam Gase looked as lost as his team, calling play after play straight into the defense. A few screen passes were attempted but telegraphed to the point where the Ravens zipped past Pouncey before Matt Moore could even catch the snap.

That was the “0” part of the score, what happened on the 40 side was easier to understand when
two Matt Moore pick sixes are included.

The defense started okay and kept Miami in the game, but the short week and a complete lack of offense caught up to them. By the third quarter, the defense was spent… Frustration became apparent about the time Kiko Alonso decapitated Joe Flacco. He didn’t hit the QB with his helmet, but the blow was brutal and started a melee. The image of Flacco rising loopy from the ground, raising his finger and calling the parking lot attendant, was classic.

The chippy play continued until punk QB Ryan Mallett, who replaced Flacco, learned a quick lesson about bating an angry Ndamukong Suh. Suh lifted him off the ground by his neck and stared him down. The fear in Mallett’s eyes was palpable and from then on the game was a matter of getting it done.

Burke’s defensive coaching was as questionable as Gases offensive offense. The Ravens pulled a play from tony Sparano’s book and lined up unbalanced with two tackles on one side and a TE on the other. Burke did not respond until the fourth quarter. The Miami defense did not adjust and Baltimore ran the play again and again and again.

Thank you NFL for taking another swipe at the Miami Dolphins. After scheduling the team to travel 14,000 miles in three weeks, Miami also had to endure an away game on Thursday night. It was completely obvious, Miami was not prepared to play this game. The long week ahead is the only redeeming factor in a season now minus a bye week.

40-0

Let that resonate… 40-0

It will be interesting to see how Miami responds. This season, by all accounts, was over before it started and somehow the Dolphins are still alive. It’s just a single game in a long season…

We R Not Normal

Miami will be back.

Upon Further Review, I Owe Jeff Ireland An Apology

So, I am guessing that almost all of you read my post on Friday night where I called Jeff Ireland, Tony Sparano, Brian Daboll, Stephen Ross, and the entire Miami Dolphins organization a dumbass.

I would like to take this post to explain myself and to apologize to everyone in the organization that I complained about.

At the time of the post I was very angry because the Dolphins had just passed up on Ryan Mallett and the Patriots selected him just a few picks later. You have to understand that I have been a big Mallett supporter for three months now, and to see Miami pass him up and the Patriots to get him to (I believe) step in for Tom Brady when he retires was very frustrating. I still believe that Mallett will be able to be replace Brady effectively, but it isn't as damning as I had made it seem.

I had a lot of time to think about it yesterday, and the truth is that the Dolphins actually had a really good draft. They strengthened their interior offensive line with Mike Pouncey, they added a lightning fast receiver to stretch the field in Edmond Gates, they took a running back in Daniel Thomas that will fit their offense well and has the potential to be really good in the NFL, and they added a pass-catching fullback who can also play tight end in Charles Clay.

Miami added a player at every position that they needed help in. They fixed a lot of problems with this draft, and I can't help but be pleased with it after giving it more thought.

The only big remaining concern of mine is Chad Henne. We are probably going to have to live with seeing him under center another year.

That isn't ideal, but I think that he has a strong enough football team surrounding him that all he has to do is manage games and he will be able to win. This will hopefully be a similar case to Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets. Sanchez doesn't have to be great, he just has to be able to manage the game and his defense and the running game will take care of the rest. That's what I'm hoping the case is with Miami.

I believe that Chad Henne is better than a lot of us give him credit for (myself included). He practically had no help at all last year. His OC sucked, his running game sucked, and he had to deal with the enormous pressure of the expectations of us fans. I can't believe I am saying this, but I think we should give him one more chance. Now that he has a great offensive group surrounding him, we will really see what he is actually capable of.

Do I think Miami should have gotten Ryan Mallett instead of Daniel Thomas? Sure, I still think Mallett is a better QB than Henne, but it won't doom the Dolphins for the next 15 years like I said it would before. The Jets have shown us that you don't have to have an incredible QB as long as you have a great team surrounding him. I was just pissed off when I wrote that post on Friday and I went a little too far.

The truth is that Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano are actually pretty good at what they do. Do they make some boneheaded mistakes every once in a while? Absolutely, but they also make some pretty brilliant moves that counter their mistakes.

So, this is my official apology to Jeff Ireland, Tony Sparano, Brian Daboll, and everyone in the Miami Dolphins organization. I doubt that anyone of them will read this or read my post from Friday, but I feel like I had to say that.

I also want to apologize to you guys who read my post on Friday night. I shouldn't have made it seem like we were screwed for the next two decades. I still think Mallett is the real deal and the Patriots getting him is a problem for the future, but he alone won't be able to beat the Dolphins without help. Hopefully the Dolphins will be able to put together a better overall team than the Pats and Mallett won't be able to take them to victory.

We'll see I guess. I have officially renounced my fandom of Ryan Mallett, though. I no longer follow him on twitter. DUN DUN DUNNNNNN.

Thanks for reading, and let me hear your reactions because I know you have them.

Miami Dolphins Trade Up And Select RB Daniel Thomas In 2nd Round

Just when I finally thought the Miami Dolphins would pick Ryan Mallett after trading up they go and select RB Daniel Thomas from Kansas State.

The Dolphins traded their third round pick, a fifth round pick, and a seventh round pick to the Washington Redskins for their 62nd overall pick.

My question is: why would Miami trade up and get rid of three draft picks so they can get Thomas?

My impression of Thomas is that he is just a solid running back. I haven't done much research on him, but that is what I have heard about him. He doesn't have breakaway speed. He has been clocked at a 4.58 40-yard dash. He is a pretty big back as well. I believe that he will be good in the NFL, but I don't think he was as good of a pick as Mallett would have been.

Last night I could kind of understand the Dolphins passing up Mallett because it was early in the draft, but tonight I don't understand why they would pass up on Mallett after giving away three draft picks.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you guys think.

Will The Miami Dolphins Take A QB In The Third Round?

Now that the first round has passed and the Miami Dolphins have selected Mike Pouncey it is time to look to their next pick.

Because of the trade to get Brandon Marshall, the Dolphins don't have a pick in the second round, so we have to look to their third round pick at 79 overall.

The question for their third round pick is will they take a quarterback? I believe they are still considering drafting a quarterback, but the good ones who are available now will likely be gone before Miami's pick.

Quarterbacks like Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallett, and Colin Kaepernick are still available. Do I think any of those three will fall to the middle of the third round? No, but there is always a chance. In the NFL Draft, players who you don't expect to slide will slide, and I am hoping that one of those falling players is Mallett, Dalton, or Kaepernick.

You guys obviously know that I want Mallett to slide to 79 the most, but I don't expect him to even come close to the third round.

The player I could see falling of those mentioned above is Kaepernick. Of the three, Kapernick was projected to go the latest, and that could still happen. You never know, though. He could be taken before both Mallett and Dalton. This has been a pretty crazy draft so far with players like Jake Locker being taken 8th overall and Christian Ponder 12th. I was shocked when I saw Ponder taken so early, and I may have a similar reaction with Kaepernick. I may not be as surprised, but you never know.

Another QB that Miami could end up getting that I haven't talked much about is Ricki Stanzi. Stanzi is a very solid passer, and his leadership would be a welcome trait after Miami has had to deal with a poor leader like Chad Henne for two years.

That's all I've got for now. After thinking about it for a little while I am content in the Dolphins getting Pouncey. Sure, they didn't get Mallett, but they fixed a big need on the offensive line.

Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think they will do at 79th.

Miami Dolphins Select Mike Pouncey With The 15th Overall Pick Of The NFL Draft

The Miami Dolphins selected Mike Pouncey with their 15th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

As solid as this pick is, I am disappointed that the Dolphins didn't get QB prospect Mallett. My only hope now is that Miami will trade up in order to still pick Mallett. I highly doubt they will, but one can only hope.

Pouncey will undoubtedly give the Dolphins some stability at offensive line, which is important. Now Pouncey will either start at center or guard with Richie Incognito starting at the other spot.

It is a relief to me that Miami didn't pick Ingram. Hopefully we will be hearing very soon about the Dolphins signing or, at least, pursuing DeAngelo Williams.

Let me know what you guys think. I am pretty frustrated right now, so I don't feel like typing anymore.

Thanks for reading.

Draft Day Is Finally Upon Us

So, Miami Dolphins fans, the 2011 NFL Draft is finally here.

I want to use this post to encourage you guys to check out the mock draft that I posted earlier this week if you haven't already. A really good friend of mine wrote it, and I am very confident that he made a lot of good predictions. Here is the link to it:
Dolphin Shout Mock Draft

I also want to tell you guys to stay tuned for a post tonight after the Dolphins make their pick. I am hoping that I can announce the selection of Ryan Mallett, but I will post regardless of whether they get him or someone else.

So stay tuned, thanks for reading, and please take a minute to check out the mock here.

The Final Evaluations: Who Should The Miami Dolphins Draft?

So now that we are just days away from the 2011 NFL Draft I figured it was appropriate to hear the final say on who the Miami Dolphins should pick.

Jeff Ireland has said that he has narrowed down the list of players the Dolphins are considering drafting 15th overall to three. He hasn't said who those three are (I would be concerned if he did), so we are left to speculate.

My guess on who those three players are is OG/C Mike Pouncey, QB Ryan Mallett, and RB Mark Ingram. I wish I could say with certainty that their favorite prospect is Ryan Mallett, but I can't.

Interestingly enough, the lockout was lifted yesterday by Judge Susan Nelson yesterday. I am not exactly sure what this means for the draft, but there is a possibility that players will be traded now. Hopefully Riverdog will clear it up for us below (no pressure Gary).

Back to Miami, though. There is still the obvious possibility that the Dolphins will trade back to a later pick in the first and get a second as well. If they traded back to later in the first they could still possibly get Mallett, and they may be willing to take that risk. It depends on how much they like him. They could just like him so much that they aren't willing to take the risk of waiting until later than 15. That would be great in my opinion, but I'm sure a lot of you don't agree with me.

Now I want you guys to tell me what you think the Dolphins will and should do on Thursday night. This is the final evaluation we will have before the draft. I have it posted today so the discussion can continue into tomorrow.

So let me know what you think. Also, if you haven't seen the Dolphin Shout 2011 NFL Mock Draft please take a minute to at least check it out. It took a lot of time to put together for both me and John, so I would greatly appreciate it if you took a look. Here is the banner linking to the mock:

Do Ryan Mallett's Drug Rumors Concern You At All?

Ryan Mallett has been tabbed by many as the most scrutinized player in this year's NFL Draft, and I tend to agree with that. Nobody has been questioned more than Ryan Mallett, and it has more than likely caused his stock to drop for at least a couple teams.

Most of that scrutiny has come from rumors of his supposed drug use. He had a run in with the law his sophmore year. He was arrested for public intoxication. It was reported that he smelled of marijuana, which he denied smoking but did acknowledge previously being around people who were.

Here is a link to details of the arrest:
http://www.arkansassports360.com/13371/arkansas-qb-mallett-arrested-charged-with-public-intoxication-updated

I want to know if the rumors about his drug use scare or concern you at all as a fan of the Miami Dolphins.

Honestly, the rumors don't scare me that much, which you guys can probably tell by how much I support him.

I don't support drug use of any kind, but smelling of marijuana isn't exactly a huge offense. Was he smoking it? I don't know, but I still don't think it is as big of a deal as people make it out to be. If he did smoke marijuana it is definitely a mistake, but I don't think that will hinder his career to any extent.

Dan Marino had similar questions when he was coming out of college and look how he turned out. I am not saying that marijuana is acceptable, just that it won't hinder his performance.

Now I want to know what you guys think. Are you concerned about Ryan Mallett's drug rumors? Would you mind if the Miami Dolphins did draft him?

Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think.

Miami Dolphins Officials To Meet With Ryan Mallett Thursday & Friday

I know most of you are probably tired of hearing me talk about Ryan Mallett, but I am going to talk about him anyway.

For those of you that are tired or annoyed of my talk of Mallett, I want you to remember me when Mallett is a top NFL quarterback. I am absolutely confident that is what he will be, and I can only hope that the Miami Dolphins draft him at 15.

Anyways, according to the Miami Herald, Ryan Mallett will be meeting with Dolphins officials on Thursday and Friday.

I believe that this means Miami is seriously considering drafting Mallett. It is their second workout with him, and this time they are taking an extra day to get to know as much about him as they can.

Let's hope that they really do want Mallett. You guys won't be disappointed.

Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think.

Calling All Miami Dolphins Fans, Read This Article

If you are a fan of the Miami Dolphins, then you need to read this article I am going to tell you about.

The article is all about Ryan Mallett and it is an extremely comprehensive look at every aspect of his game, personality, and supposed issues.

I don't want you guys to waste any more time reading what I have to say, though, so please just read the article.

I will warn you that it is very, very long, but it is worth the read and I promise you will be glad that you did. Here is the link:

Miami Dolphins Working Out Ryan Mallett Today

The Miami Dolphins are scheduled to work Ryan Mallett out today. Mallett then has a workout scheduled later this week with the Bengals, but I don't expect Cincinnati to actually draft him.

This is an important day to me, and I'm sure most of you know why. I believe Ryan Mallett is the real deal, and he is the player I want the Dolphins to draft the most.

A lot of people don't think Mallett is worth the 15th overall pick, and I don't understand why. He has the best arm of this draft class. His only real problem is his foot speed. Sure it helps to be able to move around in the pocket, but that is a pretty small problem to deal with when paired with his incredible passing ability.

Sure, there are other prospects that the Dolphins could use instead of Mallett, but I believe he is a rare talent and Miami would be foolish to pass him up. Players like Colin Kaepernick and Christian Ponder could end up being really good if the Dolphins drafted them, but I don't believe they can be nearly as good as Mallett can be.

I'm not going to say that he is the next Dan Marino because that didn't work out well last time, but he is a lot closer than Chad Henne.

I doubt we will hear what the Miami Dolphins think about Mallett until after the draft. If they do say anything it will probably just be them trying to mislead other teams.

That's all I've got for now. Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think.

Incredible Proof That Ryan Mallett Will Be The Real Deal For The Miami Dolphins

So you all know that I am a huge Ryan Mallett supporter. I believe he can lead the Miami Dolphins to a Super Bowl if they would just take a chance on him.

I urge any of you guys who think the same way that I do to write letters to Tony Sparano, Jeff Ireland, or Stephen Ross. They need to know that we want them to take Mallett, and a letter is a good way to tell them.

Anyway, I wanted to show you guys this incredible argument that I found in a Sun Sentinel blog post written by Mike Berardino. Mike didn't actually write it, though. It was written by a Joe W. Here is the segment written by Joe, and I encourage you guys to go to the actual post that I have linked in this paragraph to support Joe.

"I did a little QB research project today that I thought I'd share. Here’s what I did:

1.) I took the top 10 NFL QB's for each year for the past 5 years (2010-2006) based on QB Rating.

2.) I then determined which players appeared in the top 10 the most times. There were 8 QB's that showed up 3 or more times in the past 5 years that are still playing football (Kurt Warner retired).

3.) I then went back and researched what their final 2 years of college stats were.

4.) I compared those stats to the current 2011 college crop of QB prospects to try and get an idea of what prospects compare favorably, i.e. what guys have the best chance of being the future greats of the NFL based on their last 2 years of college production.

Results: The 8 QB's that have been in the Top 10 the most for the past 5 years averaged the following in their final 2 years of college: Comp: 64.5% Yards: 6,513 Y/A: 8.00 yards per attempt TD's: 50 total TD's the final 2 years of college TD/Int Ratio of 2.47.

There was one player that came close to all these averages: Andy Dalton: 64%, 5600 yds, 50 TD's 3.57 TD/Int ratio. He's also started the most games out of all the QB's (49), which I believe has also been proven to be correlated to NFL success.

The only other guy that compares favorably is Ryan Mallett (7500 yds, 62 TD's, 3.26 TD/Int ratio), but his completion % (60.3%) was lower than the average.

However, when looking at the Top 8 QB's the ones that had the lower completion % in the final 2 years of college, Peyton Manning (62%), Drew Brees (61%), also had the top total TD's, 57 and 51 respectively. Guys like Ben Roethlisberger and Tony Romo had high completion % (66%, 65%, respectively) and total TD's (59 TD, 55 TD, respectively), but they also didn't play in a major Division 1 conference like Manning/Brees and the others.

When looking at Mallett's JR/SR stats compared to the other top 8 NFL QB's three things stand out:

1.) His 62 total TD's the past 2 years in college are better than any of the Top 8 QB's. The most JR/SR total TD’s belonged to Big Ben (59 TD's), but again, he didn't play in a big time conference. The number two player was Peyton Manning with 57. And since he played in the SEC, the production of Mallett is all the more impressive.

2.) Mallett's 9.21 YPA number is greater than any of the Top 8 NFL QB's. This again reinforces what I saw on film that Mallett is prone to push the ball downfield and create big plays vs. the standard dink and dunk. However, he's admitted that mentality is what caused his poor JR completion numbers (56%) and he focused on that in his senior year. That focus helped his completion jump to 65% while his Yards per Attempt also increased from 9.0 to 9.4. Again, impressive.

3.) Mallett's 7500 passing yds were only exceeded by Big Ben (7725) and Drew Brees (7577), but since Big Ben played in the MAC his production gets discounted a bit.

So, in summary on Mallett, in his final 2 years of college he threw for more TD's, more yards and had a higher yards per attempt than any of the top 10 QB's currently playing in the NFL. I’d say that's about as favorable comparison as you're going to get. It's equally impressive that he produced these numbers in the SEC, the toughest conference in college football, and not some lesser conference (TCU-Mountain West Conference), which is what you generally find with many other college QB's who have put up gaudy stats.

One final note, if Cam Newton played 2 years he might have been at the beginning of this report. His 66% completion %, 30 TD's, 10.2 yards per attempt and 4.3 TD/Int ratio were all close to the top of the 2010 stats. However, the question will always be if he was a one year wonder or could have sustained this level of play for another year.

P.S. – For all the talk of mobility and 40 times with QB's, in 2010 Cam Newton was sacked 23 times and Mallett, all 5.4 in the 40, was only sacked 25 times against the same competition."

Once again, I didn't write the above work. That was all credit to Joe W. Here is a link to the post again. I encourage you guys to go and read it:
http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_seasonticket/2011/03/joe-w-and-the-case-for-drafting-ryan-mallett-for-the-miami-dolphins.html/comment-page-1#comment-219053

And, if by chance you ever read this Joe, please email me at paul@dolphinshout.com. I would love for you to be a writer for Dolphin Shout.

Now, let me know what you guys think. Does this make you think any better about Mallett?

Thanks for reading.

NFL Lockout and NFLPA Decertification Mean Big Problems For The Miami Dolphins

So, by now I expect that you guys have heard about the NFL Players Association decertifying, the NFL locking the players out, and the legal battle that is to ensue.

While this news stinks for all NFL fans, it will be even worse for fans of certain teams like the Miami Dolphins.

I am no expert on all of the legal stuff, but I have heard that the battle in court could last as long as six months. Six months from today would be September 12th, and the NFL season is scheduled to start September 8th. So, if the court battle between the NFL and NFLPA lasts anywhere as long as expected, then there could be some major problems for some teams.

Imagine an NFL season with no OTAs, training camps, or preseason. Some of you may not think that's a big deal, but it is a huge deal for teams with a new coach and new offenses to teach their players.

Enter the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have a new offensive coordinator who has to teach his players a new offense, they have huge questions at quarterback, and we don't even know who our starting running back is.

This is all bad news for Miami, because the longer the battle between the NFL and NFLPA lasts, the less time the Dolphins get to prepare for the season.

The one bright spot is that Chad Henne was able to learn the new offense. I am very glad that he was motivated enough to take the initiative and prepare for a potential lockout. I just hope he will be able to successfully teach the offense to the rest of the team. Because of this whole mess, I do think it will be smart to start Henne for, at least, the beginning of the season.

I am NOT on the Chad Henne bandwagon, though. I just think he will be the best option to start off the season because of the lockout. If he ends up doing really well and lives up to the hype that surrounded him at the beginning of last year, then more power to him, but I just don't see it happening.

I am still a huge Ryan Mallett supporter. I will be a fan of his as long as he doesn't go to a team like the Jets or Patriots, and when he ends up being extremely successful in the NFL, you guys can flood my inbox with praise. I promise I won't mind it at all. My email address is paul@dolphinshout.com, so you should add that to your contacts for when you need to send me praise.

Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think about the lockout, Henne, or Mallett with a comment. I look forward to seeing what you guys think. You may have also noticed that I didn't put up a post yesterday, and I apologize to anyone who was expecting it, but I was hoping to keep my post about the trifecta compared to the bifecta up on the top of the blog because I wanted to keep the conversation going.

Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker Perform Well At Combine, Good For The Dolphins?

Ryan Mallet and Jake Locker both did really well at the NFL Combine, and I wanted to give you guys a little overview of how they did. I hope you guys enjoy reading this, and please remember to comment with your opinions after reading.

Mallett, in my opinion, was by far the best passer at the combine. He made all of the throws and had the strongest arm of all of the QB hopefuls. I don't understand why he is only considered the third best prospect behind Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton.

He has some character questions, and that should be taken into consideration, but even with those problems I still consider him to be the top quarterback in the draft. He can make more throws than anyone else, and he is the type of player that teammates will rally behind and fight for.

Locker wasn't as good as Mallett, but he did help his stock because he made a lot of tough throws, as well. Locker has been falling on almost everybody's draft radar these past few months, so it was important for him to show up and perform well.

Locker did have some trouble with his shorter throws, which was odd because he did really well on the tougher, deeper throws. He had been having accuracy questions before the combine, and his shorter throws will only add more questions about his accuracy.

All in all, though, Locker improved his draft stock at the combine. He showed that he can throw with the best of this year's prospects, especially later in the drills when he started making the tough throws, and he definitely showed up with a 4.59 40-time. We already knew he was fast, so the 40 yard dash didn't push up his stock, but it is nice to have a faster quarterback.

I, personally, would love for the Dolphins to get Mallett. I believe he is the best QB prospect in this year's draft and that he will turn into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He can already make any throw that he will ever need to make in the NFL, and he is an intense leader that will always come ready to play.

So you heard it here, folks. Ryan Mallett will do better than Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, and any other QB prospect in this draft.

Thanks for reading, now let me know who you would like Miami to draft and who you think the best QB in this year's draft is.

Would It Be Worth The Miami Dolphins Trading Their First Pick For Kevin Kolb?

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially placed a franchise tag on Michael Vick. That means Kevin Kolb will most likely be available for trade.

I want to know if the Miami Dolphins should trade their first-round pick for Kevin Kolb.

There is a good chance that the Dolphins will take a QB in the first round of the draft, so why not get a young quarterback who already has some experience in the NFL with that pick instead?

It sounds like a pretty safe bet, but I don't know if that is what we want. It is safe because at least we are guaranteed to get him. There is always the possibility that draft prospects like Ryan Mallett and Cam Newton will already be gone by the 15th pick.

I think that is a good risk to take, though. In my opinion, both Newton and Mallett will be more successful than Kolb, and they are also a few years younger, giving them more time to help the team out.

We will see what happens, but I want to know what you guys think: should Miami trade a first-rounder for Kolb?

Let me know with your comments, and thanks for reading. Sorry for doing such a small post, but it's the offseason and nothing is happening.

You Tell Me: Cam Newton Or Ryan Mallett For The Miami Dolphins?

Today's "You Tell Me" is a special Saturday edition, which doesn't mean anything really except for there has been news about the Miami Dolphins every day this week until today.

I believe I know what most of you will answer, but I still want to ask the question and see, so here it is:

Would you rather the Miami Dolphins pick Cam Newton or Ryan Mallett in this year's draft?

There has been a lot of buzz about Newton this week, and I wanted to know whether you guys would rather him or Mallett. Most of you probably know who I would rather, but I won't say it here because that would be me influencing your answers, which is against my rules.

So let me hear it and thanks for reading.

Miami Dolphins Show Strong Interest In Cam Newton

According to Draftinsider.net, the Miami Dolphins are showing a lot of interest in QB prospect Cam Newton.

The report mentions that six different teams have Newton ranked as the number one prospect in the draft, but it does not mention any team names other than the Dolphins saying that they are "inquiring heavily into Newton at this stage of the game.

While I would be happy if Miami did pick Newton (if he is even on the board at pick 15), I think that they would be better off going after Ryan Mallett or trading down. Newton has a lot of talent, but I don't know how he will be in the NFL.

We all know how well Cam Newton was able to do against college defenders, and I don't want to take anything away from that, but he will be playing against much stronger and faster defenders in the NFL. Running the ball won't be nearly as easy, and I don't know how well Newton will be able to play if you take away his legs.

Picking Ryan Mallett is the smarter move in my eyes. He's got the arm, and he's got the intensity (which is a welcome change after having a robot at QB for two years). I believe Mallett will be a successful NFL quarterback, and I am confident that he will be more successful than any other QB in this year's draft class.

I also mentioned that I think Miami should trade down instead of getting Newton. If the NFL and NFLPA reach an agreement on the new CBA, then the Dolphins could trade their first-round pick for a second-round pick and an offensive lineman to help revamp their blocking. If a new CBA isn't reached before the draft, then the Dolphins could just trade their first pick for a second-rounder and another pick that they would use to take a lineman. Either way they can fix their offensive line and still be able to get a quarterback with whatever second round pick they get.

I know a lot of you guys like Cam Newton, but have you really analyzed his skill sets other than just watching his highlight films? He has questionable decision-making at times, and he can't fit passes into tight holes nearly as well as Mallett. He also has questions about his maturity and character. He has been arrested for stealing a laptop and has allegations against him for academic cheating while he was with the University of Florida. There are too many question marks with Newton, and it wouldn't be worth the risk for the Dolphins to take him.

The Dolphins have a lot of different needs on offense, and the draft is a good way to fill those needs. Things don't look so good for the Miami Dolphins right now, but one good draft could change all of that, so cross your fingers and hope that the 2011 NFL Draft is a good one.

Confirmation: Yes, The Miami Dolphins Will Address The QB Position For Next Season

According to Omar Kelly's Twitter post, the Miami Dolphins are going to address their QB problems in 2011.

Here is the exact post written by Kelly:
"The Dolphins are WITHOUT A DOUBT going to address the quarterback position in '11 and haven't ruled out drafting one in the first round."
This is good news for me, and I hope that they do end up drafting a first round QB.

I think that there is a good chance that the Dolphins will get Ryan Mallett if they are willing to pick him in the first round, which would be a great move in my opinion. I highly doubt that Mallett will end up being picked before Miami has a chance to get him at 15, and I really hope that the Dolphins will consider taking him.

Thanks for checking in on Super Bowl Sunday. I hope you guys enjoy watching the game, and hopefully next year the Dolphins will be in the same position as the Steelers and Packers.

P.S. I love comments, so don't be shy!

Ryan Mallett And Jake Locker's Stock Have Fallen: Good Thing For The Miami Dolphins?

In Mel Kiper's latest Big Board, which is him ranking the Top 25 prospects in the NFL Draft, he doesn't have QBs Ryan Mallett or Jake Locker on the list. Kiper says that he thinks both could still possibly be taken in the first round, but each has question marks that forced him to drop them off of the list.

This doesn't really concern me, actually. I know that Kiper is obviously not as confident in either quarterback anymore, but I still believe both players can have great careers in the NFL with whoever picks them. I think Mallett can be better than Locker, but Locker still has potential.

If anything, Kiper dropping the two is good for the Miami Dolphins. It's a good thing because if they decide to pursue either, then they could trade down in the draft, get an extra draft pick or player, and then pick Mallett or Locker with their new pick.

Before, I was concerned that Mallet would be taken before Miami would be able to get him with their 15th overall pick, but now it looks like they will be able to trade down and still get him.

While Mallett did fall a lot since the last Big Board, he hasn't fallen nearly as hard as Jake Locker has. Locker was considered by many to be a strong contender for the first pick of last year's draft before he decided to stay another year, but in this year's draft he may not even be taken in the first round. I actually wouldn't be surprised if he fell to late in the 2nd round or early in the 3rd.

Locker hasn't shown much progression at all from last year, and he has been plagued by terrible accuracy. Both those reasons have to be why Kiper dropped him from the list, and I don't blame him. In all honesty, I don't know how much I want the Dolphins to get him anymore. I guess I wouldn't mind if they picked him with a 2nd round pick that they traded down for or a 3rd round pick, but it would be a huge, huge mistake if they took him in the 1st round.

No, I don't actually expect them to take Locker 15th overall, but I am just saying it would be a very bad mistake if they did. I wouldn't put it past the current Dolphins, though.

So, yes, it does seem to be a bad sign if Mel Kiper drops both Mallett and Locker, but I am actually excited by the move because the Dolphins may still end up picking Mallett even if they trade down. I think he is the real deal, and I want Miami to take a chance on him.

Thanks for reading, and please feel free to comment. I know there isn't anything going on with the Dolphins at the moment and the news is really slow, but hang in there because there is bound to be something new happening soon.
