Miami Dolphins Players First To Begin Player-Only Workouts

The Miami Dolphins didn't do too well last season, but that hasn't stopped players on the team from beginning workouts on their own.

Players from the Dolphins, led by LT Jake Long and QB Chad Henne, will start their workouts this week, making Miami the first team with its players holding player-only workouts.

It is encouraging to hear that the players are taking the initiative and starting to prepare for next season. There isn't expected to be a lot of player participation because some agents have advised their players not to participate. Here is a quote from Drew Rosenhaus, who is a well-known sports agent. The quote is courtesy of Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel.
"If a guy works out right now and suffers an injury, he's not covered by his NFL contract during this lockout. So if you get injured, the team doesn't have to pay your salary next year. It's not a sanctioned activity, so if a guy goes out there and blows his knee, the team can say they've decided not to pay your contract this year. It's very risky."
It's too bad that the contracts work out that way, but that's how it goes. It is still good to know that some Dolphins players are committed to winning and are willing to risk injuries.

I was under the impression earlier this year that Chad Henne didn't really care if Miami won or not. His involvement in learning the offense and then teaching it to others is a good sign, and I was impressed before. My problem now is that Jake Long is leading the workouts with help from Henne. I would rather it be the other way around with Henne leading and Long helping. Henne needs to step into a leadership role if he ever wants to be a successful QB.

What I'm saying about Henne may sound ridiculous to some of you guys, but having a quarterback who isn't a good leader is like having a fast car without wheels. Leadership at QB is crucial, and Henne doesn't really seem to be much of a leader.

Anyways, enough with the Henne talk. It is good to see that some players with the Miami Dolphins are committed enough to work out on their own. Hopefully more will come, and I will let you guys know if I hear anything new about it.

Thanks for reading, and please be sure to leave a comment with your reactions.

Also, I apologize for not posting yesterday or the day before, but I was enjoying the last bit of my vacation.

Thanks again for reading, now let me hear it.

I get a kick out of Rosenhaus, talking about his players getting injured in unsupervised practices. Does he think we are all that stupid that we don't know the players have purchased their own insurance to cover such injuries ? Please !!

Paul I don't think it really matters who set the practices up, Henne is there and that alone shows the other players he is doing his part. I'd like to see a list of the players that attend those official unofficial practices, that would be interesting. For example how many of the WRs and if Marshall is working out with Henne. That would mean something even more to me.
I am thrilled these players are not sitting around and just waiting for the lock out to end. It does demonstrate character and a desire to overcome last season's debacle. I imagine other teams are doing something similar because it will be tough to learn a new system in a short span or get timing back down during the same period. Like you RD, I hope henne, Marshall and other receivers are together in these practices. Lord knows they need to get to know each other alot better. The linemen can work together on schemes and eliminate some of those mistakes. MTF

This is good news and im happy that Long and Henne are there getting the team to learn the new playbook. Im with River, i dont think it really matters who setup the practices, its just nice to see Henne there. Yes it would be really nice to get a run down on who all showed up to the practices...(hint hint Paul) would be nice to see some WR taking some reps from Henne

I will try and find out, but I can't promise anything.

As long as everyone is on the same page and puts their egos aside, it will help. Especially for the incoming rookies.

Au contrare! A strong leader is what is needed in Pro football. The QB has to have the team thinking he can pull the rabbit out of the hatj and bite its head off too. Marino pulled a mediocre team to more wins with just the fierceness of his looks and barks....he chewed some tits off during breaks and he got their attention and most players would find the extra effort. Strong leader equals wins. Period.
This is a great sign for Miami, would be nice to see exactly who is showing up like if Marshall is going to work with Henne so they can get on the same page. Having long one of the best OL in the league running things is great and having Henne show the team the new offense shows his willingness to change and be a leader. At least I hope thats what it means.
Tyler should be running the QB drills and not Hennie who is a failure at QB. But I like the other players showing up for practice. Is Ricky and Ronnie showing up as well. I hope they do and hope the two remain in Miami for this year. It will be a shame to see either of them leave due to what happened last year. Dan Henning the OC was the main problem and now Ricky and Ronnie will probably loose their jobs due to his horrible play calling. How unfare is that. I am trilled that Dan Henning has left Miami and hope the new OC does well this year.

Dean from what I know Henne is the only QB under contract, Pennington and Thigpen are not with the team. We also only have 2 running backs, Sheets and Hillard.
