My Predictions: What Will The Miami Dolphins Do In The NFL Draft?

In this post I will be telling you guys what I think the Miami Dolphins will end up doing in the first few rounds of the draft, and I will follow it with what I want them to do. I am hoping to start some discussion, so don't be shy and please comment with your thoughts after you have read this.

Let me start this off by saying that I think it would be a huge mistake if the Dolphins drafted Alabama RB Mark Ingram with their 15th overall pick. I know that Ingram will be a really good running back and I have heard the Emmitt Smith comparisons, but Miami needs to focus on getting a franchise quarterback instead. There are free agent running backs that should be able to fill in well enough.

But what do I think the Dolphins will do in the draft?

I am betting that they will trade down. Not having a second round pick is a problem, and because of that I expect Miami to trade their 15th overall pick for a later first round pick and a second rounder just like last year. My guess is that they will trade with a team like Seattle, who is stuck with the 25th overall pick because they were in a really bad division and made the playoffs with a losing record.

With the later first pick, I expect the Dolphins to take Ingram if he is on the board, but he likely won't be so I expect them to take the best available QB. Ryan Mallett would probably be their first choice, but I don't think he will be available either because I think Seattle will take him instead.

That leaves Miami to decide between either Jake Locker or Christian Ponder.

This is an extremely hard pick to predict, because Locker is really athletic and can make some really good throws, but he is still an inconsistent passer. Ponder had an extremely good NFL Combine, and many analysts are predicting him to be taken late first round. He also struggles with his touch on longer passes, but he is very accurate on shorter range passes.

I believe that the Dolphins would take Ponder here, but this one could easily go either way.

With the second round pick, I expect the Dolphins to take an offensive lineman. I will just assume that their pick will be Seattle's second round pick at 25. At that point, a lot of the very best offensive linemen prospects will be gone, but two guards that I think would be available are Orlando Franklin of Miami and Marcus Cannon of TCU. Both are really, really good run blockers, and their pass blocking is almost as good.

I see Franklin as the better guard prospect, though, and I think the Dolphins will get him with their pick. In the case that he has already been taken I would expect the Dolphins to take Cannon. Both players would fill a huge need on Miami's interior line and would help to improve last year's terrible run blocking.

That is what I think Miami will end up doing. What I actually want them to do is another thing. I would personally rather that they take Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett with the 15th pick and then worry about the O-line with later picks.

I promise every single one of you that Mallett is the best QB in the draft, and he will be the most successful QB of all of this year's prospects as long as he doesn't go to a team like the Raiders. He has the arm, the passion, and the intensity that all great quarterbacks have. He has some character questions, but it will be worth taking a risk on those questions because of how good of a passer he is.

On a little side note, I think Miami could potentially be halfway set at running back with Kory Sheets. You guys may have forgotten about Sheets(I did until Riverdog reminded me), but he is actually a very good running back who injured his Achilles tendon during Miami's preseason last year.. Sheets is very fast and has great hands, and he could end up doing really well next year if the Dolphins keep him.

That is all I have for now. Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think about my predictions. I would like to know if you guys agree or disagree with me.

i like the thought of going with a QB early and think that its a glaring need. i personally want them to trade down for a 2nd rd pick and try to increase team speed. i think we can accomplish that with a later pick of one of the speedier back in the draft. i think we try to draft pouncey in the 1st and a skilled position with the 2nd rd pick.
it wuld piss off alot of people if they traded down they will pick mark ingram a running game is a QBs best friend we dont have many play makers on O so pickin Mark wuld be an upgrade and be an excellent pick the man runs a 1.53 split thats quick nd the dolphins will always be a run first team. not to mention if we trade for VY or let hene try to regain the faith he lost

I don't trust Young or Henne. To me it is more important to find a franchise QB instead of an RB. Ingram is good, but the odds would be in Miami's favor if they tried to get a running back later on instead of a QB.

Drafting a qb is a long term solution unless they got lucky and got a Matt Stafford rookie. Based on the history of drafted qb's I'm not believing that scenario. By all means draft a qb, but do everything possible to get Carson Palmer. He is a qb used to throwing down field. If Henne is still the starter than sign Shockey, he is a qb friendly TE and a game changer. Lastly, convince Chad P to retire and be the qb coach. Henne or a rookie will need the guidance.
Well lets see my Crystal Ball says. It's a very cloudy situation. Great heip Ball !!

I would love to see them move down to recoup the 2 pick, but we need someone to make that trade. I know all of you know that. So I'm going with what we have at this time. I think they will go with an offensive lineman G/C type or maybe a tackle and move Carey inside. Lets not forget we had many guys injured last year. On that injury list with Sheets is Gardner who played pretty good in 09 as a fill in. The team can improve the OL if they get a starter on the line with the first pick. Also remember Ireland has not missed with his first round picks yet. All of them were first day starters or made the line up by the end of the year.

I also think they will draft a QB somewhere in this draft, I look for it to be someone like Ponder, Dalton from TCU, or maybe McElroy of Alabama. All of these guys are further along than Cam Newton. Ponder is a little stiff kinda like Henne, but the other 2 have mobility. Mobility is the key for a NFL QB, they don't need to be runners ( they get paid to pass ) They do need to be able to make the first guy miss, the same as all the skill position players on offense.

Then look for a speed guy WR, or RB it doesn't matter, a TE should be in the mix somewhere. Then another LB inside guy. That is 6 picks and I think that is all they have this year, didn't they give up a 7th rounder for Thiggy ?

Then look for a QB in FA " NO TRADES " of future draft picks unless it's for someone like Palmer who has been slipping down for each of his past few years. If we get Orton or Young do it when they get released.

Quick update they are talking about extending the dead line of the CBA past tonight. Stay tuned !!! Oh this will be my last update on the labor talks until Tuesday. I'm going to Disney World !!! No I didn't win the MVP of the Super Bowl :((

Iv been saying this all offseason...take Ingram he is a sure pick. Ya miami needs a qb but those are in FA and they are proven. Grab Ingram 1st round pick up Orton, Palmer or Kolb in FA and so far all the mocks show Kaepernick dropping to the 3rd round and that is the qb i would pick up. I would drop Penny and Thigpen and roll with a FA qb and Kaepernick, that should be enough compitition to show the Henne fans that Henne will always be a backup. I agree with Paul that Miami should draft a qb, but im worried that who we draft will end up being Hennes backup and we will have to endure another Henne season.
Sad news that Carolina will get Shockey which means they're paying more and Coach Chud is the OC. I think they will trade down, too. I don't think Ingram will be available then and probably not Mallett, either. I am nervous about Locker and don't think that would be a good pick. He had a lousy Senior Bowl when he could have upped his stock. Ponder also makes me nervous because he is injury prone. Kaepernick will be good. McElroy and Dalton played in winning systems. Stanzi hurt himself at the combine but there was a Bronco LB that did not do well at the Combine due to being very tired from taking med school exams and was drafted in the last round. I believe he is in the HOF now because he turned out to be a dynamic LB. I agree that we need more talent on the O-line and Orlando Franklin is probably a good fit. If the CBA finally goes through, we may have a FA or three to use and help out.

You are very right about the CBA. It would be much more convenient if they just got a deal done.
Paul I agree with you about getting Mallet. I know some people are down on him because of drug use allegations, but I remember a QB coming out of college with the same rumors swirling around him, I believe his name was Dan Marino. He turned out to be an OK QB, even without the almighty run game.
For all those who don't believe in Vince Young's QB'S ability think again. VY is a great QB always has been. The only person questioning his ability was his coach who wanted VY shipped out of town fro reasons unknown. With VY as Miami's QB the possibilities are endless playoffs is a certanity. Miami should make a trade for him and ship Hennie out of town. For trying to get a QB from the draft it takes too long for him to develop into a great QB. Miami has all the tools in place to win now. The only piece of the puzzle that is missing is the QB position. Make a trade for VY and quit trying to to pick a QB from the draft it is a waste of time and effort. Look at Hennie for an example after 3 years he still looks worse than a rookie QB.
any one who believes henne was given a fair shake is nuts .henning off calls were totaly predictable .henne i
has a great arm he was given a bad oc and terrible o line interior no running game and no wr who can strech the fieldno college qb will win this year draft ol andspeddy rec sign brown and hope dallbol is better than henningour deff is pretty good henne numbers are better than sanchez no one running him out of ny .
I am hoping that free agency happens before the draft. If the dolphins bring in any of the following in free agency that would leave the draft wide open(OL,RB,QB,speed WR.) Anyway I would like for them to trade down from #15 at least once(maybe Seattle) get a 2nd. rd pick, and maybe a 2nd trade(maybe Pittsburgh if M. Pouncy is still on the board-get another pick or 2.) If they do trade back I would take Ingram if their or Mallet(I think both will be there between 25 and 32) If no trade and have to pick at #15 I go with the best OFF. LINEMAN on the board.(not a sexy pick, but there will be alot of RB's-QB's-WR's still in the draft and in FA.) Just want a line that will proctect and open holes for who ever is the QB & RB's.( Just a thought-I would love for Henne to become that QB miami needs-but I would include Henne in a trade for Carson Palmer, Mcnabb, for Matt Flynn and picks.I would even take a chance on Vince Young.

I will say this, I would love nothing more then the Dolphins coming into the draft wit a conviction on one of these quarterbacks regadless of price and walk out of it with there franchise guy for the hex 10 years. Personally I think that guy is Ryat Mallet and I do think he will be there when Miami selects 15 overall in the first. In that scenarion Miami wither stands pat and draft Mallet, or drop dwon before Seattle's selection knowing they are a team in need of a quarterback and with a guy like Pete Carroll who thinks he can develop anyone and may be right.

Well, you have players(verterns) that can improve the team that wont take much camp, and will sign a friendly deal that can still help Miami's offense. Think Clinton Portis and Chad Johnson. For all the supposidly bad stuff that goes along with him which in actual reality amounts to some annying nterviews, some trash talking to the media, and some trash talking on the field, the Dolphins are a better team with Chad Johnson on your team then without. Add to the fact that it wont cost much and it is just a smart deal period. Imagine what would open up if you had Chad Johnson as your #2 instead of Brian Harline. Then that would in turn open things up in the slot with Bess, and then you have Hartline as your 4th reciever and all the sudden you have a very nice recieving corps. Portis is a nifty runner if he's healthy, again, you get him for a song, and Im finally all onboard with taking a RT such as Nate Solder or Tyson Smith, moving Vernon Carey to guard and picking up another guard in free agency. You can pick up a fresh set of legs to go with Portis in the 3rd or 4th round such as Kendall Hunter.
