You Tell Me: Take A Risk Or Stick With Chad Henne?

This is a good one.

I want to know if you guys would like the Miami Dolphins to take a risk with the 15th overall pick in the NFL Draft and select a quarterback, or do you want them to stick with Chad Henne as a safer option?

The lockout throws a wrench in the Dolphins plans, and because of it, whatever quarterback Miami drafted wouldn't get a lot of time to practice with the team before the season starts.

Chad Henne, on the other hand, knows the offense pretty well and will be teaching it to the rest of the team. The problem is that he has just come off of a terrible season, and I believe the Dolphins would have been better off if they had drafted a rookie quarterback when there wasn't a lockout.

So, let me know what you guys think. Thanks for reading, and I hope you are enjoying your Sunday.

I wouldnt waste a first round pick on any of the QBs in the draft lockout or not. I think mallet is the only one good enough to be top 15 worthy but he wont be around for miami. Henne is the best option he already knows the offense and hes gonna be teaching the rest of the team. That means the chemistry is going to be there cause the offense will all be on the same page. I still have faith in Henne and believe he deserves another shot. Bringing in a rookie QB to replace Henne at this point has bad news written all over it. I think Miami would be smart to grab a QB in the later rounds like Colin Kaepernick but without a 2nd rd. pick i dont see him being around in the 3rd.
I think the anti henne train needs to stop. If you are a Dolphin fan you support your team no matter what. If Chad put up good numbers last season then we would not be talking about this. Unfortunately the anti band wagon has begun and all the nay sayers are coming out of the woods sort of speak. I think you apply your system and believe i your system and you will have success not everybody in the NFL will have great years every year. So you are either a fan or not but if your a fan you take the good with the bad no matter how bad it gets period. SUPPORT THE TEAM WHOLE HEARTEDLY!!!

Maybe not the most intelligent thing to say Joe. Considering if he does get hit by a car you are the number one suspect for a possible murder case. Maybe keep these types of comments for the kiddie boards and not one of pauls blogs. And before you can say.."i dont care" or "They wont know who i am"....Just some advice....watch what you say, because your mouth can lead you to bad places.
Right now Henne is the only quarterback on the team, and the only one to know the new offense. Pigpen and Pennington will be gone thru FA. I think at best spring training is lost this year and maybe one or two exhibition games. Hopefully there will be a season though so I think they should sign a running back in the first, then pick the best qb left in the third. Ponder may be there then and I think he will work out well. I don't care who they sign in the draft, no one will beat out Henne for the qb position. So get over it Henne haters or cheer for another team this year.

I agree with everything you say onebaud. I hope Henne doesn't read all this crap that everyone is talking about him and let it get to him. I hope that he takes this offseason and steps up and leads workouts with the rest of the team. The kid has a cannon and was a four year starter at Mich. How many QBs can you say that about, and Mich brings in good looking QBs year in and year out. I hope Henne rebounds this year.
How about this as a possible RB, Marion Barber? Everyone is saying D Williams, Barber will likely be let go by the Cowboys. Here is a guy that if he can stay healthy is a beast of a RB. He could come at a cheap price too because of the health issues. I also say we need Ingram in the first no matter what. I think this kid will be a class act and a leader.
Are you kidding. Hennie has to go. I would rather see a rookie QB starting instead of Hennie. If any one thinks Hennie is going to be a great QB in this league than he has no idea of football. Hennie will always be a failure. He does not have the accuracy that is needed to be a top rated QB. Why do you think the great BILL PARCELL'S bailed on Hennie. He saw that Hennie did not measure up as a starting QB in the NFL period. It bothers me to see that there is still alot of Hennie supporters left in Miami. Get rid of Hennie and move on the sooner the better. Sparano and Ireland are on a short leash. So they better do something about getting rid of Hennie. Go after Vince Young once he is released. Young needs a second chance he never got a fare shot to prove that he is a great QB under the looser FISHER the head coach. In my book VY is a great winning QB. Miami needs to snap him up before he goes to another team.

Alright so hennes accuracy the last 2 seasons was over 60% thats actually pretty good so accuracy isnt the issue. When he was drafted he was the 3rd best QB in the draft because of how well he performed at Michigan. Dont believe me go look up his stats and scouting report. You question the knowledge of Henne supporters but you think Vince young is a good idea. You have to be kidding me hes had his chance more then once and he melted down and cried like a child each time. He threw his shoulder pads into the stands at the fans. Are you seriously suggesting that Vince young is the better option at this point. I agree that statistically hes had better years then Henne but hes shown on numerous occasions his amazing ability to implode from the smallest of setbacks. Also you cant blame Fisher he was coach for 14 seasons because hes a good coach and this is crap with Vince was the really the first major conflict hes had with another player and he didnt cause it.
Beef up the running game and stick with Chad.

Pick up Tiki Barber, run the wildcat more often, hopefully first and second down so third downs are short yardage. Get the offensive line in shape for run blocking, if that means a youth movement then go for that. Get creative

Chad's best position is when they run the Wildcat ; I believe he's on the sideline.
I don't care who the QB is the on the back of Jersey means nothing to me. I don't know what any of you are watching when you see Henne play. I see a QB that misses wide open receivers at times badly, and it's all over the field not just on difficult throws but on all of the throws. How many screen passes did the dolphins run last, how many swing passes did we see Ronnie Brown catching out of the backfield ? Not many was it, and that was because Henne couldn't execute those throws. He simply has no touch on the ball and CAN NOT make all the throws because of that reason. It's not new for him either. He has been in the league 3 years and has 30 starts and his touch has not improved. He had the same problem at Michigan when he was there. Henne is what he is, an inaccurate passer that has not improved in 3 years.

Not only that but as Shawn said on a past blog. Henne has lost the confidence of the players on the team, and it wasn't only Marshall that said it, Ricky Williams said the same thing at the end of the year in his interview.

Also it doesn't matter what we fans think. With no CBA Henne will most likely be the starter even if they bring in a FA QB. Who ever they bring in and I'm pretty sure a FA QB is going come here they will need sometime getting to know what the dolphins want him to do. So for nowHenne will be the starter and first time he slips up, and he will !! They will pull him so quick he will think he has a choker chain around his neck.

If this regime wants to stay here past this year they will have to improve something on this team, and the quickest way to do that is through the QB position with someone that is better than what we have.

I agree on Henne, but with the strike, our draft positioning and the prospects available to choose from, I believe getting a QB through the draft is a bad move at this point. Free agency is probably our best hope and Henne our strongest candidate. How about using our 1st rounder on an o-linemen like Pouncey? Our depth and quality at o-line is shallow. If he's gone, an ILB might prove wise since we'll not b able to move down and we can probably get a quality rb later. We should fortify the line and also continue solidifying our "d".

The CBA forces us to let Henne play out the rest of his hand (knowledge of the new offense). Don't waste the 1st pick on a QB. Use the 1st pick on Mark Ingram (my 1st choice) or Mike Pouncey (another great help). I agree with Riverdog that we will still end up with FA QB and Henne's choker collar will be very tight (or the FA QB will be the starter very early). But, I also think we have to use our 2nd pick (too bad not 2nd round), for a young QB. Then use our additional 5 picks in the draft to strengthen th OL, TE, WR, ILB etc ALSO LOOK FOR SPEED and flexibility.
lets get a qb next year ( luck ) this year,, lets go o-line all the way ,,that look on the owners faces last week ,,,all the teams players are in trouble,,,,we could see all new teams players in 2011>>>>>

Paul, as much as you and i disagree with who miami should draft in the 1st round, i still stick with my guns on Ingram being the best "sure" pick. You had me swaying torwards a QB a few weeks back because of the points you made, and they were good ones. But with OTA's and camp and maybe even some preseason games in jeopardy im not certain drafting a qb would be such a good idea. And i know you hate to say it, but Henne depending on how talks go with the owners/players.....Henne might be our best bet.
1 reply · active less than 1 minute ago
I hate to say it, but you're probably right that Henne is your best bet. I would still rather draftingMallett, but I don't think it will actually happen.

Anyone that supports Henne has "Delusions of Grandeur" Again people NCAA stats do NOT correllate to NFL success!!! His Michigan stats may have been good but what has that translated to in the NFL NADDAAAAA!!! So please STOP bringing up Hennes heyday, it's done & over!!! And you question our loyalty as a fan, I've been a diehard dedicated and loyal fan since 72...
If Miami is sitting at 15, without trading down and if Mallett is available take him. But Riverdog is right Henne will be the starter and the new QB will be a free agent, this is what Miami historically does.
Didn't Henne get benched last year, and Penning named as the starter? I've watched him. I've rooted for him to snap out of it. But he just doesn't have a good eye for the action on the field. Some of the interceptions were horrific. And many plays Marshall or other receivers/TEs were open and waving their hands and he was clueless. I have to say take a risk.At this point, I'm thinking about the movie The Replacements and am willing to give Keanu Reeves a shot.
Keep Henne and sign Pennington to a 1 year contract. Get the best RB available. Work the O-line hard on fundamentals, maybe next season they could pick someone up that is better.
1 reply · active 734 weeks ago
Thank you, I agree, and not because I am on the Henne fan list, but just because getting a QB, either through the draft or a trade, with the present coaching staff, would be crazy. Getting a RB, would be a safer option.

Been wasting to many high draft picks on QB over the years.......go for more needs like RB or OL why waste more picks

Henne was not the problem at all. the offensive line was much more to blame than Henne, and I wondered how we did not get much from #23 or#34 we should have led the league in rushing this year.Lex Hilliard should have touched the ball alot more than he did. Henne is the man for Miami,if given the chance and the proper players are put around him he should be able to take us further than Marino ever did.

This is the stupidest thing I've heard yet. 1. Henne not the problem at all, did you not watch one game all season. 2. The "O" cord. was also a huge problem. The o line needs help but at the QB spot you must be able to see the field, hit the receivers ( not the defence), move from the pocket, and honestly give a shit about playin. And to say that Henne should be able to take us further than Marino ever did, never happin.
Pass blocking wasn't the problem last year. The O-line was just bad at run blocking.

no the pass blocking wasnt really a problem the run blocking was non-existent. Finnation your right, anyone who thinks henne didnt play his part in the offensive failures obviously didnt watch very many games. But ultimately the offensive failures was a group effort. Which is why i think Henne deserves another shot, and him taking the initiative to learn the new offense ahead of time shows his willingness to change and to step up and be a leader. Which i agree he didnt seem like he was fired up at all last season, but i think alot of that had to do with Sparano and Henning. I mean how would you feel if your coaches were so set on having no mistakes made and putting all the pressure on you when its only your second season, and at the same time they want him to perform and yet they gave him absolutely no control over the offense. I personally dont blame him for looking so complacent all the time. How are you supposed to become better when your coaches are holding you back? You have to give your field general command of his offense on the field or your gonna get results like we did this past season. The biggest thing about henne is he is the type of Qb that needs to stay in the game, whenever he got into a rhythm and go the offense moving henning would call the wildcat take him off the field and out of his rhythm and destroy any momentum the offense had. It happened on almost every drive of every game. So there are many things to consider before you label Henne as the underlying problem because hes not.
Great comment, I would also like to throw this in....I believe that the coaches were trying to mold Henne into a Chad Pennington. Lets face it, Henne isn't a CP10 type. The reason that CP10 was so good is because he doesn't have that big arm to make a play down the field, so he relied on short dumpoff throws and manages the game. That isn't Henne's style, he is a big play QB with one hell of an arm! We drafted the guy knowing his style and we tried last season to make him into something he isn't. I hope the new OC can recognize this and let him play his style of football. If none of you can see that then think of it as a power back like Ricky being told don't run inside try to bounce it outside all the time. If that happened the you would be all over the RB and wouldn't look at his style and blame him, but really it was the coaches not letting him play his style. Was I happy with his play over the season? NO! But do I see the big picture and listen to what other players had to say about the staff? YES.

Thanks Dr. B and you hit bullzeye with your comment, that is exactly what the coaching staff has been doing more so last season then 2yrs ago when Henne first took over as starter. I think if hes aloud to play to his strengths this year he will be alot more successful and we will finally see the fire in his eyes that he had at Michigan.
I concur w/those that wanna trade outta the 15th position & pickup extra picks maybe a 2nd & 3rd rounder... Pass
on the QB & get a veteran FA... Learning curb for QB 2-3 years, FINZ are lookin for NOW!

Well its going to be Hennes 3rd year and it should be his last shot to prove himself. Hes got a long road ahead of him to prove hes worthy but i think he can do it. The question is does he think himself worthy, because it doesnt matter how talented you are if you cant overcome the mental part of the game then your not gonna make it in the NFL.

What really bothers me about Henne is his lack of compassion, emotion, desire, drive... I can tell you, if I threw an INT or incompletion i'd be fuming, i'd be pumped up for the next play & it would show...

There becomes a time in a players career that he believes he belongs in the League. When that happens every team mate knows it. I know that for a fact, because of what a few players said about that a few weekends ago at WDW. D. Williams and Brandon Jacobs said they knew they belonged in the NFL, and when they came into the league they didn't know if they belonged there or not. Both players said they knew the moment they knew they bolonged.

Chad Henne does not believe that he belongs, and his team mates know it also. Until that moment comes we will see more of the same from him. It's not the coaches fault, although they're not helping him very much, it's not the offensive lines fault, he had time to throw the ball. Chad is trying to get to the point that he believes he is an NFL player, he is not there yet. He may never get there, I really don't know, but at that this time it's Chad Henne that needs to know this is his time.

well just to add another perspective to the ongoing henne argument ill show a little comparison with another QB thats been labeled a young developing franchise QB named Mark Sanchez.

Henne Career stats- 32 games, 61.1% completion%, 6246 yds, 6.6 avg. 67 long, 27td 33int, 75 rating, Fumbles-9 Lost-2.

Sanchez Career stats- 31 games, 54.4completion%, 5735 yds, 6.6 avg. 74 long, 29td 33int, 70 rating, Fumbles-19 Lost-4

Stats dont lie and with what i just posted proves 2 things.1) Henne is statistically as good if not slightly better then Sanchez. Biggest differences is the Jets Have a good offense all around which is the biggest reason for Sanchez' progression from his rookie year to last year. You put Henne with the Jets and i say he out performs Sanchez greatly. 2) Sanchez is overrated.

Now compare the last time these 2 played each other
Henne- 5/18 55yds 1TD 0INT
Sanchez-17/44 216yds. 0 TD 1INT
Now that was an ugly game for both teams and both players but there is one Big difference those stats show, and thats which QB led his team to victory(Chad Henne). Now with this im not saying Hes gonna be the Man this year im just trying to back up my reasons for supporting Henne.
